To stream thunderstorm and distant thunder ambience on YouTube around the clock, prepare audio and visuals you have rights to use, enable live streaming on an eligible channel, then send the feed through an encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and key. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live, and monitor the stream after launch. A continuous broadcast needs a host that stays connected; a computer-based setup depends on that computer, its power, and its internet connection staying available.
What you need before starting
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check YouTube Help for the current rules before launch: Get started with live streaming.
- Live streaming enabled: First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before a planned test or launch. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- An encoder and prepared feed: YouTube supports encoder workflows for prepared audio and video. An encoder can be software on a computer or standalone hardware; YouTube’s encoder guidance lists OBS among verified encoder tools, but notes that listed products are not made by YouTube.
- Cleared media: You need the necessary rights for every sound recording, composition, and visual in the broadcast, including the intended live use and any archived replay.
A camera, microphone, audio interface, or dedicated hardware encoder is not inherently required for a prepared ambience feed. The essential elements are a stable audio-visual feed, an encoder, and a reliable connection.
Prepare the thunderstorm ambience feed
Choose audio and visuals you can use
Use original recordings and visuals, or obtain permission that covers your intended live broadcast and any replay. Keep copies of licenses and permissions. Do not assume a recording is free to use simply because it captures rain or thunder: rights can apply to a particular recording, composition, or visual even when the subject is a natural sound.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content continues, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated. If you have permission to use third-party material, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to their Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption when the channel has not been allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a feed that can run continuously
Put the storm audio and any still or slowly changing visual into the encoder workflow you plan to use. Listen through the full playback path before launch: check that thunder is audible at an appropriate level, that the bed does not cut out unexpectedly, and that the image is present. For a local encoder, the computer must keep running and connected for the duration of the broadcast. A power or internet interruption can stop the feed; the official setup guidance does not prescribe a complete 24/7 failover design.
Start the YouTube livestream with an encoder
- Enable and verify live access. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming setup and complete channel verification and activation. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation before relying on a test or launch.
- Create a stream in Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and set up the broadcast. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Set up and start the encoder. Select the prepared storm audio and visual feed, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then start sending the stream. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe frequency. For resolution and bitrate, use YouTube’s current table of encoder settings rather than guessing: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Check the preview before going live. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and confirm that both image and sound are correct. Do not treat a running encoder as proof that viewers can see a healthy stream.
- Start the broadcast and verify access. Begin the stream from the Live Control Room workflow, then check the watch page and channel page. YouTube recommends checking access on mobile devices as well as reviewing the preview.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on stream health, audio, and video. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality; for this format, listen for silent gaps, clipping, or unexpected changes and check that the visual remains present.
- End it deliberately when needed. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the broadcast in Live Control Room as appropriate to the workflow you chose.
Encoder settings and protocol notes
For a standard encoder stream, YouTube’s general guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval, CBR bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. The suitable resolution and bitrate depend on the output quality you intend to send; consult YouTube’s current encoder-settings page for its supported combinations instead of applying a one-size-fits-all number.

HLS is an alternative protocol for supported encoders, not a requirement for an ambience livestream. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. Use those HLS-specific requirements only if you are configuring an HLS encoder: Set up an HLS stream.
Plan for interruptions and archives
A 24/7 broadcast depends on a continuous feed. With a local computer and encoder, loss of power, internet, or the encoder process can interrupt it. YouTube’s cited encoder guidance does not specify a universal failover architecture or promise automatic recovery for every setup. Test your own workflow and decide how you will notice a failure and restart or restore the feed.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete replay. If you need an archive, plan stream duration and replay needs together, and confirm current behavior in YouTube’s encoder guidance: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud

Common problems and fixes
- No live-streaming access: Check channel verification, restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still processing. Enable it ahead of time; YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder connects but the preview is blank or silent: Check the selected audio and video sources, server URL, and stream key. Confirm the feed is actually playing in the encoder before starting the broadcast.
- The preview looks right but viewers cannot find the stream: Check the Live Control Room status and confirm the watch page is accessible from the channel and on a mobile device.
- The stream is interrupted after launch: Check encoder status, power, and network connectivity. If third-party media is present, investigate a Content ID match and ask the rights holder about allowlisting where appropriate.
- The replay is incomplete or missing: Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be archived as one replay. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; its cited guidance does not promise the archive outcome for longer streams.
Copyright and monetization considerations
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights and applicable licensing on the provider. The terms specifically include music licensing rights and other royalty participants, and apply to live content on Google services worldwide. Read the current YouTube Terms of Service and applicable licensing rules for the territories where the stream is available.
YouTube says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream, but that does not establish that a particular looped ambience channel qualifies. The official encoder guidance does not settle how YouTube will assess a specific repetitive or reused-content format. Do not assume continuous streaming or use of an encoder guarantees monetization.
