First confirm the channel can go live, prepare media you have permission to use, connect to YouTube over RTMPS, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health panel. A VPS can keep the sending process running when your own computer is off, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted or indefinite broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube lists both as prerequisites for enabling live streaming; see YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- A Linux VPS with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen video bitrate, plus a way to keep the encoder process supervised.
- A rain recording and visual that you created or are authorized to use in a live broadcast.
- An encoder that can send H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio using RTMP or RTMPS.
- Access to YouTube Studio to create the live stream, obtain its stream key, and inspect stream health.
This is a practical configuration outline, not a tested VPS recipe: no particular Linux distribution, provider, VPS plan, command, or uninterrupted 24/7 run has been verified here.
Prepare rain audio and visuals you can legally stream
Use recordings and visuals you made yourself or have permission to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If a match remains unresolved, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Rain ambience, repeated loops, and live broadcasts are not automatically exempt from copyright rules. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and obtain any necessary permissions before going live.
Prepare the media as a continuous program: pair the rain audio with a still image or moving visual, and check that the audio does not end before the video or leave an unintended silent gap. If you loop a short recording, confirm that both the recording and the visual are cleared for repeated public playback.

Configure a YouTube encoder stream
Create the live stream and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream using the encoder streaming method.
- Copy the stream key from the stream setup page. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or shared repositories. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Use YouTube’s displayed ingest details and select RTMPS where available. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; its developer guidance requires an RTMPS URL, a valid YouTube ingest endpoint, and port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS documentation.
Choose encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed the recommended four-second maximum. AAC or MP3 are listed audio options. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution and the available connection: choose a setting that the VPS can sustain continuously, and consult the current YouTube encoder settings guidance for its resolution-specific recommendations.
Do not assume a VPS’s advertised port speed represents sustained outbound capacity. The stream must maintain its bitrate through the route to YouTube’s ingest point. Test with the intended media and settings before the public broadcast, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages.

Use FFmpeg or OBS without guessing at a command
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, but the exact FFmpeg command depends on the media’s format, whether you need to loop or transcode it, the installed FFmpeg version, and the ingest URL and key shown in your account. Those details have not been validated as one working command here, so copying a generic command could produce incompatible timestamps, audio/video settings, or a broken stream. Build and test an encoder configuration against your actual files and software version before scheduling a long broadcast.
If you use OBS on the VPS, configure the stream destination with YouTube’s RTMPS server information and stream key, then set the output encoder to H.264 with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Confirm the audio encoder and bitrate match YouTube’s current guidance and your media. Launch, monitor, and recover
- Run a preflight broadcast using the same audio, visual, resolution, bitrate, and VPS route planned for the full program.
- Check that YouTube receives both picture and sound, and inspect the stream-health panel for warnings before making the stream public.
- After launch, monitor the encoder process, VPS outbound network, and YouTube dashboard. A VPS does not by itself restart a failed encoder; configure process supervision and alerts using tools appropriate to your Linux distribution and hosting provider.
- If the stream drops, identify whether the encoder stopped, the VPS lost network connectivity, the configured bitrate exceeded sustained capacity, or YouTube reported a stream-health or rights issue. Correct the cause before restarting; repeated restarts will not resolve a rights match or an inadequate connection.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube will not enable live streaming: verify the channel and check for a live-stream restriction within the preceding 90 days, the access conditions YouTube specifies.
- Encoder cannot connect: recheck the ingest URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, confirm RTMPS is used with the valid endpoint, and ensure the VPS can make outbound connections on port 443.
- Frequent dropped frames or unstable stream health: reduce the bitrate or resolution, test the VPS route again, and confirm the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Rising dropped-frame counts can indicate network instability or insufficient capacity.
- Picture arrives without sound, or sound without picture: inspect the encoder’s selected input tracks and output codecs, then test with the same media before relaunching.
- Broadcast interrupted after a copyright match: review the matched content and rights status. A license may not prevent interruption if the owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID.
- Stream ends when nobody is watching the VPS: check whether the encoder process exited or the host/network restarted. Add process supervision and monitoring; recovery behavior depends on your host and setup.
What “24/7” can and cannot promise
A VPS can serve as an always-on encoder host, but neither the host nor the YouTube live-stream guidance cited here establishes that a single broadcast can run indefinitely. The inspected guidance does not state a maximum duration for this rain-stream use case or guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Plan to monitor the broadcast and verify YouTube’s current rules rather than assuming a live event, replay, or VPS will remain available without interruption.
