For videos you own or have permission to archive, export the files through YouTube Studio or Google Takeout, copy them to an external hard drive, and keep a second copy on separate storage. YouTube Premium downloads are for offline viewing inside YouTube, not ordinary portable video files. How much storage you need depends on the files you plan to keep and how quickly the library will grow.
First, decide what belongs in the archive
A 24/7 collection can mean your own channel uploads, videos you have permission to retain, or a list of public videos you want to watch later. Those are not interchangeable. YouTube’s creator export tools cover your own uploads; they do not make every public video available for permanent local copying.
YouTube’s UK Terms of Service restrict downloading or other uses of content except where the service expressly permits it, YouTube authorizes it, the relevant rights holder authorizes it, or applicable law permits it. The cited terms apply to the UK; rules and terms may differ by location. Archive your own material or content you are authorized to save, and check the applicable terms and law for your circumstances. YouTube Terms of Service.
Export videos you uploaded to YouTube
Download individual uploads in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to the Google account that owns the channel and open YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Content.
- Find the video, open its options menu, and choose Download if that option is available.
- Save the downloaded MP4 to a temporary folder on your computer, then copy it to the external drive after connecting the drive.
YouTube says its creator download tool may provide an MP4 at 720p or 360p, depending on the video’s size. Downloads may be unavailable for removed videos, videos with certain strikes, and videos using preapproved audio. YouTube also lists a limit of five downloads per video in a 24-hour period. Check YouTube’s current instructions and restrictions at Download YouTube videos that you’ve uploaded.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Export all eligible uploads with Google Takeout
- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the account that owns the channel.
- Select the YouTube data you want to export and follow Takeout’s prompts to create the export.
- When the archive is ready, download it to your computer. If it arrives in multiple parts, download each part before organizing the files.
- Extract the downloaded archive, check that the video files open, and copy them to your external drive.
YouTube identifies Google Takeout as a way to download all uploaded videos. The export is still subject to account and content availability; consult YouTube’s help page above for current details.
Why Premium offline downloads are different
YouTube Premium offline downloads are accessed through YouTube while you are signed in. They are not described by YouTube as ordinary, portable video files that you can move to an external disk and keep as a permanent archive. Offline availability can require reconnecting and syncing; a video that is no longer available may be removed on the next sync. Use this feature for offline viewing in YouTube, not as your external-drive archive. See Watch videos offline with YouTube Premium.
Choose drive capacity from your actual library
Measure first, then allow for growth
- Gather the eligible video files you expect to keep and total their file sizes using your computer’s file manager.
- Add a realistic allowance for future videos and temporary working space for downloading, extracting, and reorganizing exports.
- Choose a drive with rated capacity above that total. The usable space shown by a computer can be lower than the manufacturer’s rated capacity, and the operating system and filesystem also affect what is available.
There is no universal capacity recommendation without knowing your video sizes, collection, and growth rate. For example, Western Digital’s 2025 G-DRIVE datasheet lists 18TB, 22TB, 24TB, and 26TB configurations. It states up to 280MB/s read and write for the 22TB and 24TB configurations, based on WD internal testing; actual results depend on the host and usage conditions. WD also notes that actual usable capacity may be lower and specifications can change. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent comparison or a recommendation for every archive. See the Western Digital G-DRIVE datasheet.

Check the connection and where the drive will live
- Computer compatibility: Confirm the exact drive model works with your computer’s ports and operating system. Check the supplied cable and the filesystem requirements before moving a large archive.
- Portable USB drive: A straightforward choice when one computer or user accesses the library at a time, or when you need to move the archive.
- Desktop external drive: A stationary option to consider for a large library kept beside one computer. Confirm its power and connection requirements before purchase.
- NAS: Consider network-attached storage when multiple users need simultaneous access. It requires network setup and is less portable; it is not a necessary upgrade for a single-user archive.
These are access-pattern trade-offs, not a current product benchmark. Choose based on your setup rather than assuming the largest or fastest drive is automatically the right one.

A folder structure that remains understandable without a particular app makes a video library easier to browse and move. For example, use folders by channel or subject, then year. Keep the original title and date or video identifier in each filename where practical, and avoid relying on a folder named only “New videos.”
A small spreadsheet or index can record each video’s title, original YouTube URL, date, channel, file path, and any relevant rights or permission notes. Those fields are practical suggestions, not a required YouTube format. Keep the index with the archive and include it in your backup.

Make a second copy and check it
An external drive holding the only copy is storage, not a backup. A drive can fail, be lost, or be damaged. Keep a second copy on a separate drive or independent storage, and make sure it is not exposed to the same everyday risks as the primary copy.
- After copying, open a selection of files from the new drive to confirm they play.
- Periodically compare the primary archive and its second copy, and update the backup when you add or replace files.
- Plan for storage-media refresh. The archival guide cited here recommends anticipating replacement after approximately 3–5 years; treat that as its guidance, not a guaranteed lifespan for every drive.
RAID can help a storage system tolerate some drive failures, but it does not replace a separate backup. A second copy addresses a different risk from fault tolerance within one system. See the National Archives preservation products guidance.
What to do when the archive workflow fails
The Download option is missing
Check that you are signed in to the account that owns the upload and review YouTube’s listed restrictions. Removed videos, certain strikes, or preapproved audio can make a download unavailable. Use Google Takeout for an export of eligible uploads; do not try to bypass YouTube’s restrictions.

The export is smaller or lower resolution than expected
YouTube’s creator download tool may provide 720p or 360p depending on the video. Confirm that the file has finished downloading and check its properties before deleting or replacing any other copy. Do not assume an export preserves the exact original upload file.
The drive shows less free space than its label suggests
Manufacturer-rated capacity and the usable capacity displayed by a computer are not always identical. Check the computer’s reported free space, the drive’s format, and whether other files or extracted export archives are occupying space. Leave room for future additions and temporary work.
The copied video will not open
First play the source file on the computer. If it plays there, copy it again and test the new copy. If the source does not play, re-download or re-export it if available. Keep the source until the archive copy has been verified.

The library is difficult to browse or the backup is out of date
Use a consistent folder and filename scheme, keep an index alongside the files, and update both the index and the separate backup whenever the archive changes.
Or let it run in the cloud
