First find out which kind of stutter you have: OBS dropping frames points to an unstable or insufficient network connection; rendering or encoding overload points to your computer; viewer buffering may happen even when OBS reports a healthy stream. Check OBS’s counters and status before changing settings, then fix the cause that the evidence points to.
Diagnose where the stutter starts
“Lag” can describe different problems, and the fix depends on which one is happening. Ask whether the video looks choppy in OBS or at the broadcaster’s end, whether OBS reports dropped frames or rendering/encoding problems, or whether viewers alone report buffering.
- OBS dropped frames are increasing: investigate the connection to the streaming server and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate.
- OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload: reduce the work OBS and the computer are doing to compose and encode the stream.
- OBS reports no dropped frames, but viewers buffer: consider viewer internet quality, location, and device capability, as well as whether the stream bitrate is accessible to more viewers.
These are separate failure modes. OBS’s guidance explains that dropped frames signal an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the bitrate, while rendering and encoding use finite computer resources. It also notes that viewers may report buffering without OBS dropping frames. OBS connection troubleshooting (published 2024-09-30), encoding performance troubleshooting (published 2021-06-12), and buffering troubleshooting (published 2021-06-09) cover these distinctions.
If OBS is dropping frames, check the network first
- Watch the dropped-frame counter and connection status in OBS. If the dropped-frame count keeps rising during the stutter, treat the connection to the remote server as the leading problem—not as proof that the video file itself is faulty.
- Test a wired connection. If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, connect the computer to the router with Ethernet and see whether the problem changes. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. An Ethernet cable can help test this network issue; it will not fix GPU rendering or encoding overload.
- Compare bitrate with available upload speed. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat that as a starting point from OBS, not a guarantee or universal YouTube setting: available upload capacity can vary, and other network activity can compete with a 24/7 stream.
- Try a different streaming server and review network software. OBS recommends trying another server and checking software or hardware that could affect the connection. Change one thing at a time and observe whether dropped frames stop increasing.
- Contact your ISP if the issue persists. The route from your computer to the streaming server includes equipment and network routing outside OBS’s control. If the connection remains unstable after these checks, OBS advises contacting your ISP.
If rendering or encoding is overloaded, reduce computer workload
OBS has to composite and render scenes before encoding them, so a stream can stutter even with a stable network. The relevant changes are those that reduce work in the scene or give OBS more system resources.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Close known GPU-heavy applications. Shut down applications that are actively using the GPU, then check whether OBS’s rendering or encoding symptoms improve. Avoid closing software indiscriminately; test the programs likely to compete for graphics resources.
- Simplify the scene. Temporarily remove costly sources and filters, then test again. A simpler scene can help identify whether a particular source or effect is contributing to overload.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. If reducing competing workload and simplifying the scene are not enough, try a lower output resolution or frame rate. Make one adjustment at a time so you can tell which change helped.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can resolve GPU overload in many cases. It is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee.
For more detail on these workload remedies, see the OBS encoding performance guide.
If only viewers report buffering
If OBS is not dropping frames and the broadcaster’s output appears smooth, the issue may be on the viewer side. Viewer location, device capability, and internet quality differ, so a bitrate and stream quality that work for one person may not work for another.

- Ask whether the problem affects multiple viewers or just one, and whether it occurs on a different device or connection.
- If several viewers have trouble while OBS shows no dropped frames, consider whether a lower bitrate would make playback more accessible. Changing bitrate may reduce the load on viewer connections, but it does not establish that OBS or YouTube is at fault.
- Do not treat “no dropped frames” as proof that every viewer has smooth playback; OBS specifically describes buffering complaints that happen without dropped frames.
See OBS’s stream buffering troubleshooting for its discussion of viewer-side variation.
Re-test methodically after each change
For a 24/7 stream, avoid making several changes at once and assuming the first one was the fix. Record the current symptoms, change one likely cause, and watch whether the relevant OBS indicator improves during a representative period. If the dropped-frame count still climbs, return to network checks; if rendering or encoding warnings remain, continue reducing workload. If neither appears but viewers still report buffering, investigate audience conditions and bitrate accessibility instead.
