Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo stop dropped frames on YouTube Live, first determine whether the encoder is struggling or the outgoing internet connection is unstable. Check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room stream health, then adjust only the relevant cause: encoder load and sources, connection stability, or stream settings such as bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. Test the changes with representative video and audio before relying on them live.
1. Check YouTube’s stream health and your encoder
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and review its stream-health indicator, error messages, and real-time metrics. Check the encoder’s status at the same time. A viewer reporting buffering does not by itself establish that your encoder is dropping frames.
Use the encoder’s own preview or status display to determine whether the video looks or sounds poor before it reaches YouTube. If it does, focus first on encoder errors, processing load, and the quality of the audio and video sources. If the encoder output appears healthy, investigate the outbound connection instead. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and sources, reviewing the local archive, and trying another encoder as a diagnostic step when no problem is evident in the recording or encoder output.
2. Find out whether the problem is the encoder or the connection
If the encoder output looks or sounds bad
- Check the encoder’s error messages and system load while the stream is running. High processing demand can be a clue that the encoder is struggling.
- Inspect your input sources, including the video and audio reaching the encoder.
- Review a local recording, if available. It can help distinguish a source or encoding problem from an issue that occurs only during delivery to YouTube.
- Use a current version of your encoder. If the local recording and encoder output show no fault, testing with a different encoder can help isolate a software-specific issue.
If the encoder output appears healthy
Test the upload connection used by the streaming computer. YouTube recommends an upload connection test; if it identifies a problem, contact your internet service provider. Advertised download speed alone does not establish that the outbound connection is stable enough for a live stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you are on Wi-Fi and suspect its stability, testing with a wired Ethernet connection can help compare the two setups. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix: dropped frames can also come from encoder load, source quality, or stream settings.
3. Match stream settings to the connection
Choose settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use, and make sure the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube’s published figures are recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection will remain stable. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 recommended bitrate ranges; other codecs have separate tables.

| H.264 video profile | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
These ranges are from YouTube Help, accessed 2026. They are recommendations for the listed H.264 profiles, not minimum requirements or evidence that an internet connection can sustain the selected rate.
Use a supported, consistent encoder profile
For RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video. Its guidance supports up to 60 fps. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the complete, codec-specific table; the published settings may change.

If your upload connection cannot reliably support the profile you selected, test a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. Change one relevant setting at a time where practical, then compare encoder status and Live Control Room health during the same kind of content. This makes it easier to see which adjustment helped rather than changing several variables at once.
4. Test before the event and keep monitoring
- Recreate the real workload. Include movement and audio similar to what you plan to stream; a static test image may not reveal problems that appear during a demanding segment.
- Start early. For an encoder-based event, start the encoder ahead of the scheduled stream so there is time to check the connection and output.
- Check the preview. Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the expected picture and sound before beginning the event.
- Monitor throughout. Watch stream health and listen for audio issues during the broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming guidance advises testing ahead of time and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.

5. Distinguish dropped frames from viewer buffering
Dropped frames during encoding or transmission are not the same symptom as playback buffering on a viewer’s device. Use encoder status and Live Control Room metrics to investigate the sender side; do not treat a viewer’s report alone as proof of an encoder fault.
Latency also affects playback. YouTube notes that lower latency leaves viewers with less read-ahead buffer, which can increase playback buffering. If the sender’s output and stream health look sound but viewers report interruptions, consider whether the playback behavior is related to latency rather than dropped frames at the encoder. See YouTube’s guidance on live stream latency.

Common symptoms and next steps
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview or local recording is already poor | Check encoder errors and load, audio/video sources, and the recording. Test a different encoder if the fault is not visible in the source or archive. |
| The encoder looks healthy, but YouTube reports stream-health problems | Test outbound upload connectivity. If the test finds an issue, contact your ISP. |
| The connection test is satisfactory, but dropped frames continue | Review the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current recommendations and test a more sustainable profile. |
| Some viewers buffer, but the encoder and stream health appear healthy | Do not assume encoder drops. Check the playback context and account for the reduced read-ahead buffer associated with lower latency. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is that a pre-recorded program needs to remain live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option from diagnosing and operating a local encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not live camera capture. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
