To keep a Windows PC awake while it runs a 24/7 YouTube stream, set its sleep timeout to Never while plugged in. You can still let the screen turn off: display timeout and system sleep are separate settings. If the computer sleeps anyway, check the laptop lid action and use powercfg /requests to inspect active power requests.
Set Windows to stay awake while plugged in
Change the sleep timeout for plugged-in use, since a continuously running stream depends on the PC staying awake. Menu labels can vary with Windows updates and device capabilities.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under When plugged in, set Make my device sleep after to Never.
- Choose a separate setting for Turn my screen off after. The display can turn off while the PC remains awake.
Windows 11 presents separate durations for screen-off and sleep, and distinguishes between plugged-in and battery use. Microsoft’s Windows power settings guidance describes the current controls.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Under the sleep controls for when the PC is plugged in, set the timeout to Never.
You can also reach the power-plan controls through Control Panel’s Power Options. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s power-mode support page.

Choose whether the screen should stay on
The screen-off timer does not determine whether the computer sleeps. If you want to save display power or avoid a bright screen, set Turn my screen off after separately and leave Make my device sleep after set to Never while plugged in. This keeps the PC awake without requiring the display to remain lit.
Check laptop lid and power-button actions
A laptop may sleep when its lid closes even if its idle sleep timeout is set to Never. Review the plugged-in behavior for both the lid and power button:

- Open Control Panel and go to System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Check the Plugged in column for the lid action and the power-button action.
- Change an action only if it fits how you use and supervise the laptop.
Available behavior can differ among PCs, so verify the setting on the device that will run the stream. Microsoft’s sleep and shutdown guidance documents the Control Panel route.
Diagnose unexpected sleep with powercfg
List active power requests
Open Command Prompt and run:
powercfg /requests
This lists active requests from applications and drivers. A power request can prevent automatic display power-off or entry into low-power sleep; inspecting the output can help explain unexpected power behavior. See Microsoft Learn’s powercfg command-line reference.

Review sleep transitions
To generate a report of sleep transitions, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics
This command requires an elevated prompt. Use the report to investigate when the system entered sleep rather than assuming the timeout setting was the cause.

Use request overrides cautiously
powercfg /requestsoverride can configure overrides for a process, service, or driver, with request types including Display, System, and Awaymode. First identify the caller with powercfg /requests and understand the request before overriding it. Overriding the wrong request may interfere with intended power behavior; consult Microsoft’s command reference before using the option.
Power mode is not the sleep timeout
Windows power modes—such as efficiency, balanced, and performance—are separate from the sleep timer. Their availability depends on the hardware and manufacturer. Changing power mode is not a substitute for setting the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never. Microsoft explains the distinction and availability in its power-mode guidance.

What this setting does—and does not—keep online
Preventing sleep removes one reason the PC might stop running its streaming software, but it does not guarantee that a YouTube stream stays online. The Windows settings and commands above address the PC’s power behavior, not every cause of stream interruption. Microsoft describes sleep as a low-power state that lets a PC resume quickly; its guidance does not establish a reliability statistic for 24/7 YouTube streams. Its wording is: “Sleep uses very little power, your PC starts up faster, and you’re instantly back to where you left off.” (Microsoft Support.)
