If your OBS sleep stream keeps replaying one short clip, the fix depends on what you want: enable Loop on a single-file Media Source, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for a sequence of clips. If repetition is unwanted, replace the short source with a longer file or a playlist. These settings control media playback in OBS—not the YouTube viewer’s Loop button or whether the live connection stays online.
Choose the right OBS loop setting
One clip: Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the clip and click its Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open Properties.
- Enable Loop to replay the file when it finishes.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends if the source is showing an end frame rather than behaving as expected. This setting changes what appears after playback ends; it does not enable looping.
- Click OK and preview the scene through at least one complete playback cycle.
If you do not want the same short clip to repeat, turn off Loop and use a longer video or a multi-file playlist instead. A single short source cannot provide varied playback on its own.
Several clips: VLC Video playlist
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- Open the source’s Properties and add the video files to its playlist.
- Set the playback order, then enable Loop Playlist to restart the source after it reaches the end of the list.
- Preview the playlist and check that it advances through the intended files and restarts at the expected point.
OBS media sources support common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Confirm that your files play correctly in the chosen source before leaving the stream unattended.
Check which kind of repetition you are seeing
- The same local clip restarts: Check Loop on the Media Source. To vary playback, use a VLC Video playlist with multiple files.
- The picture freezes on the final frame: Check whether Loop is off and review Show nothing when playback ends. That display option is separate from looping.
- A clip starts over when you switch scenes or show the source: Review Restart playback when source becomes active. It controls the starting point when the source is activated, not whether playback loops after completion.
- Playback changes when a source is hidden: VLC Video has a playback behavior setting for whether media stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or continues while its source is inactive. This concerns the OBS source’s visibility, not the status of the YouTube broadcast.
- Only a viewer sees a video repeat: YouTube’s viewer-facing Loop control repeats a video or playlist for that viewer. It does not change the media source feeding an encoder’s live stream.
Test the stream before leaving it on overnight
- Preview the full OBS scene and verify the clip or playlist plays as intended, including what happens at the end of each file.
- If you change scenes or hide the source, confirm that playback behaves the way you expect.
- Start the YouTube broadcast and monitor stream health before relying on it unattended. YouTube’s live settings include the stream URL and key and encoder-related settings.
- Keep the source files available to OBS and verify the stream key and network connection. Playback looping does not prevent failures in the encoder, connection, key, media files or platform.
A successful loop only establishes that the media source can repeat; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted live connection. A local OBS setup also depends on the computer and encoder remaining active.

For either local OBS option, the stream can still stop if the machine, encoder, network, key or source files fail. Cloud hosting moves playback off the local computer, but service terms, file limits and platform support should still be checked for any provider.
