You can loop a compatible prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Indian VPS with FFmpeg, using YouTube’s stream URL and key and a supervised process that restarts after failure. The VPS location is a hosting choice, not a special YouTube streaming mode: verify sustained outbound capacity and transfer costs for the instance you choose. This guide covers prerecorded-file looping; a live camera or other live input needs a different input and reconnect setup.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before configuring the VPS. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Linux VPS with the media file available locally, enough disk for files and logs, and stable outbound bandwidth. Check the provider’s regional availability, sustained egress policy, transfer allowance or charges, restart/console access, and monitoring options.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Confirm the available build and encoders with
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -encoders. The official FFmpeg command-line documentation and protocol documentation describe its options and RTMP-family protocols.
No particular Indian VPS provider, region, or fixed server size is established as best for this job. A stream-copy workflow can use little CPU when the source already matches the chosen output; transcoding requires more CPU, and its needs depend on codec, resolution, frame rate, and measured encoder load.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then open the Live Control Room’s Stream tab and create or select a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Use the exact URL provided by YouTube; prefer RTMPS when offered. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies TLS on port 443. Do not guess a regional endpoint. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Keep the key secret. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, log, or shared shell history. Store it in a protected configuration or environment file and restrict access. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the VPS configuration. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at YouTube Help.
- For initial checks, set visibility to private or unlisted. Confirm the preview arrives in Live Control Room and check audio, picture, and viewer access before switching to public.
Choose output settings that fit the source
Set resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, and bitrate for the output you intend to send. YouTube’s current encoder-settings page provides bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the matching profile rather than copying a number from an unrelated tutorial. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the profile and audio options you will use.
YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. For a single stream targeting bitrate B, reserve at least B × 1.2 of sustained outbound capacity as a planning minimum, then include other traffic and the VPS provider’s egress limits. This is a practical application of YouTube’s margin, not a certified VPS requirement. If sending primary and backup feeds, include both in the capacity calculation. See YouTube bandwidth guidance.

Run a prerecorded file in a loop
The following is a starting template for a compatible prerecorded MP4 that you choose to re-encode to H.264 video and AAC audio. Replace the uppercase placeholders with values for your selected YouTube output profile. The example uses a two-second keyframe interval: calculate the GOP value as frame rate Ă— 2 (for example, 60 fps means 120 frames). Set the buffer according to the selected profile rather than treating the placeholder as a fixed recommendation.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/source.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'
-re reads at the media’s native rate, and -stream_loop -1 repeats the file indefinitely. The endpoint shown is illustrative only: in production, do not put a real key in the command line, where it may be exposed through shell history or process inspection. Use a protected configuration method with restricted permissions. FFmpeg’s command-line and protocol manuals document the underlying options.

When the file is already encoded
If its codecs, frame rate, resolution, audio, and bitrate are compatible with the selected ingest profile, consider stream-copy mode instead of re-encoding. That avoids spending CPU to encode again, but it does not make an incompatible source suitable; inspect the media and test the resulting ingest before relying on it. If you change output settings or discover playback issues, use an explicit encode and validate it in Live Control Room.
When the source is live instead
A live input is not a file loop. Remove the file-looping options and configure the relevant camera, capture device, or network input, then separately plan what happens if that source disappears. Restarting FFmpeg can recover a process crash, but it cannot restore a failed source by itself.

Keep FFmpeg running and check recovery
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd with a restart-on-failure policy. Persist logs, monitor process health and outbound traffic, and check YouTube Studio for missing ingest or a stalled preview. A restart policy reduces manual intervention but does not guarantee uninterrupted output: test both the stream and recovery behavior before relying on it. FFmpeg documents TCP keepalive support for long-lived RTMP connections, but keepalive does not replace source-failure handling or confirmation that YouTube ingest has recovered. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video during the stream; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Plan for the archive separately from stream continuity. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If a complete replay matters, record independently and schedule sessions below that threshold rather than assuming a long continuous broadcast will become a complete archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

VPS checks for an India-based setup
- Test outbound performance from the actual VPS and confirm sustained egress, not just the provider’s headline download speed. YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream. Its general bandwidth guidance is not a certification of any VPS region or provider. YouTube bandwidth guidance.
- Check monthly transfer caps or egress billing against continuous operation, plus available disk for the source media and logs.
- Check that your chosen location is available and that you can restart the instance, access its console, and monitor it.
- If transcoding, assess CPU use with your specific resolution, codec, and frame rate. No fixed instance size has been tested or established here.
There is no evidence here that one Indian region is inherently faster for YouTube ingest than another. Choose based on measured route quality and the provider terms that apply to your instance.
Rights and YouTube rules still apply
Use only video and audio for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube places responsibility on the content provider to hold those rights, and live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Repeating a file or running it from a VPS does not change those obligations. See YouTube Terms of Service and YouTube live-streaming guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- No live-streaming option or no activation: check channel verification and restrictions in the preceding 90 days; if this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no preview: confirm the exact server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, that the key has not been reset, and that the VPS can reach the selected RTMPS endpoint outbound on port 443. Keep credentials out of public logs while investigating.
- Stream drops or repeatedly reconnects: inspect FFmpeg logs and VPS network/egress limits, then measure sustained outbound capacity against bitrate plus headroom. A process supervisor can restart a failed FFmpeg process, but it cannot fix an unstable route or unavailable source.
- Video or audio is rejected or looks wrong: compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio options with YouTube’s current settings for the selected profile. Avoid assuming the source file is ingest-compatible.
- Replay is missing or incomplete: broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep an independent recording and split a schedule into shorter sessions if the archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop rather than managing Linux, FFmpeg, and VPS recovery, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-live input. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
