To start a low-latency stream with the service historically called Wowza Streaming Cloud, create a stream in the current Wowza Video interface, choose an input workflow and a region near your source, then configure your camera or encoder with Wowza’s connection details. For interactive, near-real-time viewing, assess WebRTC; for broader protocol options, consider HLS and its latency tradeoffs. A low-latency setting can reduce delay, but it cannot guarantee end-to-end latency: the source, processing path, playback device, and networks all matter.

Before you start: Wowza Streaming Cloud and Wowza Video

Wowza’s current setup guidance uses the name Wowza Video, while this article’s title uses the historical Wowza Streaming Cloud name. Follow the labels and options available in your own account; access to particular workflows can depend on your service and license. In particular, standard WebRTC and Wowza Video Real-Time Streaming at Scale are distinct offerings, and the latter requires a paid license.

Have a camera or encoder that can send a supported input format, and know which playback experience you need to serve. Wowza lists RTMP, SRT, RTSP, WebRTC, and file as input workflows. It also names vMix, Epiphan, Telestream, LiveU, Teradek, and Matrox among the encoder and camera input types. Compatibility depends on the device and chosen workflow, so check its protocol and codec support before configuring it.

Create a stream and connect your source

  1. Open Wowza Video and create a stream. Choose the input type that matches your source device and workflow.
  2. Select a broadcast region. Choose one close to the source location; Wowza recommends this for performance.
  3. Copy the generated connection details. The information varies by input workflow and is what you will enter on the camera or encoder.
  4. Configure the source device. Enter the server, stream, protocol, or other details Wowza provides. Follow the device’s manual for its exact fields and start its output.
  5. Confirm the input is arriving. Check the stream status in Wowza before setting up or evaluating playback.

If you do not already have a source device, a compatible H.264 live streaming encoder is one category to consider. A separate encoder is not necessary for every setup: first check whether your camera or production software can send the selected protocol and codec directly.

Choose a delivery workflow for the latency you need

Workflow Best fit What to know
Standard WebRTC Near-real-time, interactive viewing. Wowza’s documentation says standard WebRTC may suit audiences below 300 viewers or cases where other delivery protocols are also desired. This is vendor guidance, not a universal audience limit.
Real-Time Streaming at Scale Large audiences that need very low latency. Wowza claims half-second latency for viewers, but this is a vendor-stated capability, not an independent measurement. It is separately licensed and not available in the free trial.
HLS When this delivery path better matches the playback needs of the audience. Low-latency tuning can reduce delay, but smaller packets or segments increase network overhead and can make playback less resilient on weak connections.

Do not treat these latency figures as interchangeable: they refer to different products and configurations. Also confirm that the chosen playback protocol works with the target player, browser, and devices. A requirement for interaction, the expected audience size, account eligibility, the need for transcoding, and viewers’ available bandwidth should all influence the choice.

Tune HLS carefully

Wowza’s API documents a low_latency setting for HLS-HTTPS. Its documented default is false. When enabled, it disables incoming and sort packet buffers and sends smaller packets, which can reduce delay while increasing network overhead. The setting is not a guarantee of a particular viewer-side latency.

A Wowza REST API guide describes reducing the default HLS segment duration of 10 seconds to 2 seconds, with 8–10 seconds described as achievable. These are documentation figures for that API workflow, not universal playback results. Shorter segments can increase overhead and make stalls more likely when a viewer’s connection cannot keep up.

Legacy Wowza Streaming Cloud documentation describes low-latency HLS as reaching as little as 10 seconds, while warning about bandwidth overhead and possible stalls on weak connections. It also says that setting does not reduce latency on the hosted webpage. Treat this as legacy behavior, not a promise about the current Wowza Video interface; verify the available controls and playback behavior in your account.

Test the complete playback path

Once the source is reaching Wowza, test using the actual player and connection your audience will use. Measure from the source event to what appears on the playback device; a setting in the streaming service alone cannot account for every stage of that path.

  • Check that the source is sending the codec and format supported by the chosen workflow.
  • For a WebRTC path through Wowza Streaming Engine, determine whether the source can pass through or must be transcoded.
  • Check source frame structure and encoder buffering, which can add delay even when the delivery protocol is low latency.
  • Test on representative viewer networks. Smaller packets and segments may raise overhead and expose bandwidth limits.
  • Confirm that the player is using the delivery path you intended rather than a different protocol or hosted playback option.

Wowza Streaming Engine documentation gives expected WebRTC latency of one second or less for passthrough streams and two seconds or less when transcoding is needed. These are vendor-published expectations for that specific workflow, not guaranteed end-to-end results. Transcoding and encoder frame buffering can affect latency.

Common problems and fixes

  • No incoming video: Recheck the selected input type and the connection details entered in the source device. Confirm the device is transmitting the protocol Wowza expects and inspect its own output status.
  • More delay than expected: Verify the actual playback protocol, source buffering, and whether transcoding is required. Test the full path rather than relying on a low-latency setting alone.
  • HLS playback stalls: The connection may not have enough bandwidth for the higher overhead associated with smaller packets or segments. Test on a stronger connection or use a less aggressive latency configuration.
  • Low-latency control is missing: Check whether the control applies to your product, input, and playback workflow. Legacy Streaming Cloud instructions may not match the current Wowza Video account interface.
  • Real-Time Streaming at Scale is unavailable: Check account licensing; Wowza documents this as a separately licensed feature that is not included in the free trial.
