To start a charity livestream on YouTube, first check whether your channel can use YouTube Giving, confirm that the nonprofit is listed, create a fundraiser in YouTube Studio, and attach it to a scheduled livestream. Test the broadcast before the event and tell viewers where the Donate button will appear. If YouTube Giving is unavailable, you can still point viewers to a clearly identified external fundraising page.

How YouTube charity livestream fundraising works

YouTube Giving lets eligible creators attach a fundraiser for a qualifying nonprofit to a livestream. Donations are collected and distributed through Google’s fundraising arrangements, not paid to the creator. YouTube Help says that “100% of your contribution goes to the nonprofit and YouTube will pay transaction fees.” Google partners with Network for Good to collect and distribute donations at Google’s request. Network for Good has exclusive legal control of donations once collected; if funds cannot be disbursed to the designated nonprofit, YouTube’s FAQ says an alternate qualifying nonprofit may be selected.

Donors receive an emailed receipt after payment is processed, and YouTube says donations are non-refundable. Tax treatment depends on the donor’s location and circumstances, so do not promise that a contribution is tax-deductible; direct viewers to YouTube’s donor tax information and local tax guidance.

Check access before planning the event

Channel access requirements

YouTube’s stated general criteria for creator access to YouTube Giving include being based in a supported location, having at least 10,000 subscribers, being in the YouTube Partner Program, and not having a channel designated Made for Kids. YouTube notes that some channels outside those criteria may still see access, so the practical check is in YouTube Studio: open Earn > Giving. Availability and interface details can change; confirm them in Studio and on YouTube’s current YouTube Giving FAQs.

The supported nonprofit must be a US-registered 501(c)(3) public charity, belong to Google for Nonprofits, opt into online fundraising through GuideStar, and follow YouTube’s policies. Private foundations are not currently supported. Search for the organization in the YouTube Giving setup tool. If it is missing, it may not meet the criteria or may not have opted in. YouTube says a request to add a qualifying nonprofit can take up to five business days.

Set up the fundraiser and attach your livestream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and check Giving access. Select Earn > Giving. If the Giving tab is available, choose Get started, then Create a fundraiser.
  2. Select the nonprofit. Search for the eligible organization by name and verify that you have selected the intended charity before proceeding.
  3. Enter fundraiser details. Add a title and description, and choose collaborators if relevant. You may also set a goal and duration. Explain what the event supports in clear terms, without implying that the creator receives donations.
  4. Attach the scheduled livestream. Select the scheduled live stream that should carry the fundraiser. You can also start fundraiser setup in Live Control Room under Advanced Settings.
  5. Check the start date and publish. The fundraiser start date controls when the Donate button appears. Confirm it matches your event plan, then publish the fundraiser.
  6. Verify the viewer experience. Open the stream’s watch page and confirm the fundraiser is visible when it should be. Check the stream from both desktop and mobile layouts, and make sure the event is accessible from your channel and watch page.

Choose a broadcast method for the event

YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console livestreams. Pick the setup that suits the event’s mobility and production needs; a simple broadcast does not require a studio. YouTube Help’s streaming tips say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”

Method Best suited to What to plan for
Mobile Quick updates or an event where the host needs to move around Check YouTube’s mobile-stream eligibility requirements and test coverage, framing, and audio at the event location.
Webcam A straightforward computer-based talk or presentation Use a computer with a webcam; check framing, lighting, and microphone audio before going live.
Encoder Concerts, conferences, overlays, gameplay, or external cameras and microphones Configure and monitor the encoder and Live Control Room. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event.
Console A broadcast centered on console content Follow the console maker’s livestream instructions and verify that the fundraiser is attached to the correct scheduled stream.

Check upload bandwidth and audio

For an encoder stream, check upload capacity rather than relying on download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, if the stream’s total bitrate is 5 Mbps, aim for at least 6 Mbps of stable upload capacity. This is headroom guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Test from the same network and location you will use for the event. A separate microphone can improve speech or music capture in a computer or encoder setup, but it is optional.

Test the stream and prepare viewers to donate

  1. Run a test stream. Confirm the correct camera, microphone, encoder settings, and stream destination before the event. Review YouTube’s live-stream startup guidance and streaming network guidance for current setup details.
  2. Start the encoder early when using one. YouTube recommends setup at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event. Use that window to check the Live Control Room preview and correct audio or video problems.
  3. Check access on mobile and desktop. Confirm the event can be opened from the channel and watch page. With live chat enabled, mobile viewers need portrait mode to see chat.
  4. Explain where the Donate control is. When live chat is on, viewers can donate in chat. For streams without live chat, the Donate button appears by or below the video. Tell viewers which route applies to your event.
  5. Explain donation visibility. A viewer can choose whether a live chat donation is public. Public donations may show the account name and amount; if the viewer does not make it public, the amount appears as “Anonymous.”

Live Chat Donations replace Super Chat for Good, and Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable on streams with Live Chat Donations. Plan the chat experience around the fundraiser rather than promising those features alongside it.

If YouTube Giving is not available

If your channel cannot create a native fundraiser, or the charity is not selectable, you can direct viewers to an external fundraising page instead. This is separate from YouTube’s native Donate button: make the distinction clear in the stream description, end screen, and spoken call to action. Google for Nonprofits points to services such as GoFundMe and JustGiving as examples of third-party fundraising sites. Before sharing a link, verify the destination charity, fees, receipt process, and any disclosure requirements that apply to your location.

Do not describe an external page as YouTube Giving or imply that YouTube’s donation-fee and distribution terms apply to it. Those terms belong to the native YouTube Giving process.
