To start a 24/7 YouTube radio station, confirm that your channel can livestream, clear the rights to every audio and visual element, then send a continuous playlist and visual feed to YouTube using an encoder on a computer or VPS—or a hosted cloud playout service. YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted operation for any of these setups, and a successful test broadcast does not establish that your music is licensed.
1. Confirm your channel can livestream
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person livestreaming must be at least 16. Check access in YouTube Studio before preparing the station; YouTube lists encoder streaming among its available methods. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance has the platform’s requirements.
2. Clear music and visual rights before launch
The channel operator is responsible for having the rights needed to use the stream’s content, including music licensing rights, and for meeting applicable legal and licensing requirements in the territories where the stream is available. The necessary permissions depend on the tracks, rights holders, territories and use; there is no single universal license package established here. YouTube’s livestream terms set out the channel provider’s responsibility.
Do not treat “free” or attribution as permission
A free download, credit line, subscription or license intended for another platform does not by itself establish permission for a continuous YouTube livestream. Confirm that the specific license allows this use and covers the relevant territories. YouTube identifies public-domain music and music used with permission as copyright-safe categories, recommends its Audio Library, and advises checking license terms for music from other sources. Keep copies of licenses and rights-holder communications.

Understand Content ID interruptions
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, the stream may be interrupted or terminated; an archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. If you have permission to use music, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. 3. Choose how to keep the station playing
A continuous station needs a recurring audio source or playlist, a visual feed, and a connection to YouTube. The practical choice is who maintains that playback and connection: you on a local computer, you on a server, or a hosted playout service. None of the cited setup examples establishes guaranteed uptime or a universal cost comparison.

Self-hosted desktop with OBS
OBS provides a graphical encoder workflow for combining audio with a static or looping visual and sending the broadcast to YouTube. Your computer and streaming session must remain available for the station to keep running. Self-hosted server with FFmpeg
A VPS can run FFmpeg to combine an audio feed and visual and send them to YouTube without keeping an attended desktop open. This command-line route gives you responsibility for the server, configuration and recovery. Hosted cloud playout
A hosted playout service can let you upload files, assemble a playlist, connect YouTube and run the stream without a local PC. Before choosing a provider, verify its current capabilities, rights-handling expectations, pricing and what happens when a stream drops. 4. Prepare and test the station
- Verify eligibility. Confirm live access in YouTube Studio before investing time in setup.
- Assemble cleared material. Choose audio and visuals you are authorized to use in the territories where the stream will be available. Save the relevant licenses and permissions.
- Select a playout workflow. Choose OBS on a computer, FFmpeg on a VPS, or a hosted service based on who will operate and recover the system.
- Configure the broadcast. Create and configure the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then connect it to your selected encoder or service. Follow the current interface and setup guidance for that method; the sources cited here do not establish a single current set of encoder settings for every workflow.
- Run a controlled test. Use an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast to check that audio and visuals play as intended, YouTube reports a healthy stream, and you know how to recover from a drop. A technical test does not prove that the content is licensed.
- Address Content ID before going public. If using licensed third-party music, contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel. Watch YouTube Studio for warnings or interruptions while the station is running.
- Write down a recovery plan. Decide who will respond to a dropped connection, encoder failure or rights warning, and how the stream will be restarted or changed. Recovery behavior varies by setup; the sources cited here do not verify a universal automation procedure.

6. Troubleshoot common launch problems
YouTube Studio does not allow you to go live
Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days, and that the person operating the stream meets YouTube’s age requirement. Review YouTube’s current eligibility guidance in Studio.
The stream is interrupted or terminated
Check YouTube Studio for a copyright warning or match. YouTube may interrupt a livestream when it detects third-party content. If you have permission, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; otherwise, stop using the disputed material and resolve the rights issue before restarting.

The audio or visual does not play as expected
Use a controlled test to check the playlist or source, audio, visual feed and broadcast health before going public. Confirm the selected encoder or service is connected to the intended YouTube broadcast, then follow that tool’s current troubleshooting guidance.
The stream drops and does not resume
Use the recovery plan you prepared: check whether the computer, VPS or hosted service is still running, then restore the encoder or service connection and confirm stream health in YouTube Studio. Automatic recovery is not established for every setup, so verify the behavior offered by your chosen method rather than assuming a restart will happen.
