You may not need to split the video at all. YouTube allows verified accounts to upload videos up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever limit is reached first. If your file exceeds a limit, you can split it with FFmpeg’s segment muxer, then upload the parts and arrange them in a YouTube playlist. For a file over 256 GB, consider compressing it first; YouTube specifically names H.264 as an option.
Check YouTube’s limits before splitting
For videos longer than 15 minutes, the account must be verified for long-video uploads. The maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. YouTube also recommends using an up-to-date browser for uploads over 20 GB. Copyright claims or strikes may affect an account’s eligibility to upload long videos. See YouTube Help, Upload videos longer than 15 minutes — Computer.
- If the file is within both limits, uploading it as one video is usually simpler than making parts and assembling a playlist.
- If it is over 256 GB, consider compressing it in video-editing software before splitting. YouTube names H.264; choose settings based on the source, acceptable image quality and target file size rather than assuming one preset suits every video.
- If it is longer than 12 hours, splitting into parts is necessary to keep each upload within the duration limit.
Choose sensible part boundaries
Plan cuts around chapters, subject changes or other natural pauses. Leave some margin under the applicable upload limits, especially if you are estimating output sizes. A split made with stream copy may not land exactly on the requested time: FFmpeg’s segment muxer starts segments at keyframes, so the next available keyframe can determine the boundary. The muxer works best with constant-frame-rate video. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for its segment muxer options and constraints.
Split the video with FFmpeg
Use stream copy when speed and preserving the existing encode matter
FFmpeg’s stream copy mode copies encoded streams without decoding and re-encoding them. That avoids the additional computation and generation loss associated with transcoding. The following is a starting pattern for a compatible input and output container, not a guarantee that every video’s streams can be copied into MP4 this way:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f segment -segment_time 3600 -reset_timestamps 1 part_%03d.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with your file name. This requests segments of about 3,600 seconds (one hour) and produces numbered files such as part_000.mp4. Stream-copy segment boundaries still depend on keyframes, so the files may not be exactly one hour long. Mapping every stream with -map 0 can also include tracks that are not supported by the chosen output container; if FFmpeg reports a muxing or codec error, review the source’s video, audio, subtitle and other streams and map only those you need. The FFmpeg Documentation describes stream copy and transcoding, and the Formats Documentation covers segmenter behavior.

Re-encode only when size or boundary control justifies it
If you need smaller files, a different codec or more control over where cuts can occur, transcoding may be appropriate. It takes more processing time and can reduce image quality. To get accurate split positions, the output needs keyframes at the desired boundaries; simply requesting a segment interval does not ensure that result. Select encoding settings for the source and intended output, and test a short section before processing a long recording.
Check the parts before uploading
Play the beginning and end of each part, including the joins between consecutive files. Check that picture and sound continue as expected, audio remains in sync, and subtitles or other required tracks are present. If the cuts disrupt continuity, adjust the boundaries or use an encoding workflow that places keyframes where you need them.

Upload the parts and put them in order
- Open YouTube Studio and upload each output file. Set each video’s details as you go.
- Give the videos consistent titles that make their sequence clear, such as “Title — Part 1,” “Title — Part 2” and so on. Numbering helps viewers identify the intended order even outside the playlist.
- Add each part to the same playlist, either an existing one or a new playlist. Review the playlist order after adding the videos and correct it if necessary.
- Choose visibility and publishing timing deliberately. Uploading imports a file; publishing makes it available. YouTube Help’s Upload YouTube videos — Computer explains the Studio upload and playlist workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded video continuously, that is different from splitting a large upload into playlist parts. StreamNeo does not split files or replace YouTube’s upload limits: it keeps a YouTube stream running from videos you have uploaded or arranged in a playlist. Upload the video or build the playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
- Each slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
