To show YouTube chat inside the video your viewers watch, add a YouTube-compatible chat overlay to your encoder scene—usually OBS—using a Browser source. OBS does not provide its own chat overlay. If you mean showing chat on a website beside an embedded live video, use YouTube’s live-chat iframe instead; that is a different setup.
Choose where chat should appear

The website iframe is not a general-purpose transparent OBS overlay recipe. For chat inside the broadcast video, use the overlay-and-encoder route.
Add YouTube chat to an OBS scene
- Start or schedule the YouTube live stream. Make sure its live video and chat are available. YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for formats such as gameplay and streams with overlays.
- Choose an overlay provider or widget that supports YouTube. OBS itself does not supply the chat overlay. StreamElements is one documented example: it offers overlays that include chat and can be rendered in broadcast software through a browser source. This is an example workflow, not a claim that it is the only or best option.
- Create or select the chat overlay and copy its overlay URL. In StreamElements, the documented process is to copy an overlay URL from its dashboard or editor. Other providers may use different labels or steps.
- Add it to the scene in OBS. Select the scene where chat should appear, open Sources, add a Browser source, and paste the overlay URL. OBS Browser Source loads a web page in a scene and is commonly used for chat boxes and alerts.
- Set the source size and position. Adjust its dimensions and place it where it will not obscure essential video content. Ensure the Browser source sits above the content it should cover in the scene’s source order.
- Preview before going live. Check that messages appear and remain legible at the intended output size. If you resized or repositioned the source, check the scene again before broadcasting.
Embed YouTube live chat on a website instead
For a website page hosting an embedded live video, YouTube documents this iframe URL pattern:
https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=VIDEO_ID&embed_domain=YOUR_DOMAIN

- Get the video ID from the live watch-page URL.
- Identify the domain of the website page that will host the chat.
- Replace
VIDEO_IDandYOUR_DOMAINin the URL, then use it as the iframe source on that page.
The embed_domain value must match the domain of the page containing the iframe or the chat will not open. YouTube says embedding live chat is not available on mobile web.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The chat does not appear in the OBS scene: Confirm the stream is live or scheduled with chat available, that the overlay supports YouTube, and that the Browser source contains the copied overlay URL.
- The source is present but hidden: Check its position, dimensions, and order in the OBS Sources list. A source placed beneath an opaque video or image may be covered.
- Chat is hard to read: Adjust the overlay’s dimensions or placement, then preview at the stream’s intended output size. Avoid placing messages over important on-screen material.
- The website iframe does not open chat: Check that the video ID is correct and that
embed_domainexactly matches the hosting page’s domain. The documented website embed is not a substitute for an OBS overlay.
