Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo share your screen on a live stream, either use YouTube’s built-in screen sharing in Live Control Room or add a screen-capture source to a scene in OBS Studio. YouTube’s built-in route requires a connected webcam and microphone; OBS gives you more control over scenes, overlays, and audio. In either case, check what viewers can see and hear and run a short test before presenting.
Choose a screen-sharing method
| Method | What it suits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room | A direct share of a screen, window, or browser tab during a webcam-based stream. | YouTube requires a connected webcam and microphone. A supported browser tab’s audio is shared by default. YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions. |
| OBS Studio | A stream with scenes, multiple sources, overlays, or more deliberate audio mixing. | You add a display- or window-capture source to an OBS scene, then connect OBS to YouTube using the Live server URL and stream key. OBS Quick Start Guide · YouTube encoder instructions. |
The distinction in layout control follows from the documented features; it is not a measured performance comparison. If you only need to share a screen and have the required webcam and microphone, Live Control Room is the simpler route. Choose OBS if you need to compose a more involved presentation.

Share your screen with OBS Studio
1. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard before building the scene. OBS says it takes your hardware and network conditions into account. Start with the output it recommends, then verify the stream and recording settings you intend to use.

In the Sources box for your scene, add the capture source that matches what you want viewers to see:
- Whole display: use Display Capture on Windows, Linux, and macOS 12.6 and earlier. For macOS 13, OBS directs users to macOS Screen Capture.
- One application window: use Window Capture on Windows, Linux, and macOS 12.6 and earlier. For macOS 13, use macOS Screen Capture.
- Hardware-accelerated game on Windows: OBS describes Game Capture as a Windows-only source for this case. It is not the general choice for a browser or ordinary application.
These source and operating-system distinctions are from the OBS Sources Guide. If the source list or behavior differs in your setup, consult the current OBS and operating-system documentation for your version.

3. Set up the audio your audience needs
Picture capture and audio capture are separate checks. OBS says it is set by default to capture desktop audio and the microphone. Speak into the microphone and play the audio you want viewers to hear; confirm that the expected meters move in the Audio Mixer. If a meter is missing or the wrong device is selected, open Settings → Audio and choose the intended devices manually. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
For application-specific audio, OBS documents Application Audio Capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS 30.1 added an option to include audio with Window Capture or Game Capture sources. If you use separate Application Audio Capture sources, OBS advises disabling the global Desktop Audio source to avoid echo. The available options depend on your operating system and OBS version; see the OBS Application Audio Capture guide.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Enter those in OBS’s stream settings to connect the encoder, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the stream key as private account access information; do not show it in your capture or presentation.

5. Preview and test before presenting
- Confirm the preview shows the intended display or window, not an unrelated screen.
- Check the microphone meter and any application or desktop audio you need.
- Close or hide private windows and notifications that could appear in the captured area.
- Make a short test recording or stream and review both picture and sound before the real presentation.
OBS explicitly recommends testing for a few minutes before a first stream or recording. Its Quick Start Guide says: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.”

| What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|
| The audience sees the wrong area or window. | Check that the selected source and the preview correspond to the display or application you intend to share. Hide unrelated windows and notifications before going live. |
| Your microphone is not heard. | Speak and watch the Audio Mixer meter. If it does not move, check the selected input in Settings → Audio. |
| Viewers hear desktop sound but not the application you intended. | Check whether the application has its own audio capture source and whether your OS and OBS version support that route. For separate Application Audio Capture sources, OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio to avoid echo. |
| Viewers hear an echo or duplicate sound. | Look for the same audio being captured by both a dedicated application source and global Desktop Audio; disable the global source when using separate Application Audio Capture sources, as OBS advises. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream. | Check that OBS has the YouTube server URL and stream key entered as described in YouTube’s encoder instructions. |
Blank capture behavior and operating-system permission prompts can vary by OS and version; consult current documentation for the exact system you are using rather than assuming a universal fix.
Protect the stream and your channel
Before sharing, check the entire captured area for account details, private messages, files, or notifications. Only show material you have the right to broadcast. For a documentary discussion or screening, remember that owning a copy or being able to play a video does not by itself establish permission to stream it; check the relevant rights and platform rules for the material and your use.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded video that should keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow from sharing a live desktop: it loops videos you upload, not a camera or live screen capture. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encode. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for service details, or start your free day.
