For a 24/7 Gurbani stream focused on continuous listening rather than live conversation, choose Normal latency in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends Normal for streams that do not plan to interact with viewers; it offers the lowest viewer buffering and supports all resolutions and live features. If you plan to respond to chat in real time, consider Low or Ultra-low latency instead, understanding that shorter delay can make playback more vulnerable to buffering. YouTube explains the latency modes and their trade-offs here.
Choose the mode for the kind of Gurbani stream you run
Latency is the delay between what your encoder sends and what viewers see. A continuous Gurbani stream is often a listening experience, not a conversation, so a shorter delay may offer little practical benefit. The stream’s continuous duration alone is not a reason to choose Low or Ultra-low latency; the deciding factor is whether real-time interaction matters.
| Mode | YouTube’s stated use | Typical latency description | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams | No numeric threshold stated by YouTube | Lowest viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features, including 4K. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds | A balance between interaction and buffering; 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation and engagement | Most viewers experience less than 5 seconds | More sensitive to connection or ingestion problems; 4K is not supported. |
The latency figures are YouTube’s typical descriptions, not guarantees for every viewer. Lower latency gives the player less read-ahead buffer, so connection changes or congestion are more likely to cause buffering. Even an upload connection with adequate average speed can experience congestion. YouTube does not publish a specific latency target for 24/7 Gurbani streams.
Set the latency in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Enter the stream details, then open Stream or Manage from the right-side menu.
- Open Stream Settings.
- Under Stream latency, select Normal latency for a listening-focused stream, or select Low or Ultra-low if the stream needs the corresponding degree of interaction.
YouTube documents latency selection for encoder or mobile streams. Webcam and mobile streams are always configured for interactivity, so latency cannot be selected in this way for those streams. Studio labels and placement can change; check the current Live Control Room before preparing a broadcast. See YouTube’s latency-mode instructions.

Check encoder and connection settings before going live
Use a supported ingest configuration
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; CBR bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Confirm that your encoder supports the codec you select. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Follow the current values and settings in YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%. Check upload capacity, not download speed alone, and use a reliable connection: disruptions can interrupt the stream. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.

Test the actual program
Before going live, test with audio and motion similar to the real stream, then monitor stream health and messages during the broadcast. For Gurbani, that means testing the actual audio path and, if used, the still image, transitions, or overlays. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers testing and stream health at its encoder settings page.
Know the HLS limitation
If your workflow uses HLS, Ultra-low latency is turned off. HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments from 1 to 4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, in addition to other protocol requirements. HLS is not a route to Ultra-low latency. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Keep a long-running stream’s expectations realistic
Latency mode controls the delay and buffering trade-off; it does not guarantee that a stream will stay online continuously. YouTube’s guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation or prescribe a particular internet service or backup-power setup. A dedicated encoder is one possible component, not a requirement. YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder designed for streaming directly to YouTube Live, while also noting that creators can start without expensive equipment. The listing establishes compatibility as an option, not that this device is necessary, best, or cost-effective. Check YouTube’s encoder list for current information.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded Gurbani recordings without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
