The target uses the event’s server URL and generated stream key; the key is not the friendly label shown for it in YouTube.
Before you start
This procedure is for Wowza Streaming Engine and assumes a source stream is already connected to its Live application. You also need a YouTube live event and its Stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup likewise requires the server URL and stream key from the event’s Stream Settings. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Keep the generated key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the event.
Create or select the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or open the event you intend to use.
- Open the event’s Stream Settings and note the Stream URL and generated stream key/name. Use the event’s current values rather than copying a URL or key from an example.
Add the YouTube Live target in Wowza Streaming Engine
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the relevant Live application.
- Choose Stream Targets, then select Add Stream Target.
- Under Third-Party Target Destinations, select YouTube Live.
- Enter a unique, descriptive target name, then select the incoming stream under Source Stream Name.
- Separate the YouTube Stream URL into the destination host and application fields. For example, Wowza documents
rtmp://abc.rtmp.youtube.com/live2, where the host isabc.rtmp.youtube.comand the application islive2. Your event may supply a different URL, so use its actual host and application. - Leave Destination Application Instance blank. Use destination port 1935 for RTMP unless the event’s current instructions specify otherwise.
- For Destination Stream Name, enter the generated alphanumeric stream key/code from YouTube. Do not enter the friendly Stream Key label that you assigned in YouTube.
- Add the target.

Enable the target and start sending the source
- In the application’s Stream Targets settings, enable Stream Targets for the application.
- Check the individual YouTube target. If it is Disabled, enable it too. Adding a target does not by itself ensure both levels are enabled.
- Start or connect the configured source stream to Wowza, then monitor the target’s status and check YouTube Studio to confirm the event receives the stream.
Wowza documents that YouTube automatically creates lower-bitrate renditions for adaptive-bitrate playback; no additional configuration is required for those renditions. This does not replace checking that your source reaches Wowza and the event receives the outgoing stream.
Understand the target fields and status
- Host and application: These come from the YouTube Stream URL and are separate fields in the dedicated Wowza target form.
- Destination Stream Name: Use the generated key/code, not its friendly label. Treat it like a password and do not expose it in screenshots or public notes.
- Waiting: Wowza defines this as an enabled target that is not yet pushing. The source may not be connected, or Wowza may still be initializing the destination connection. Waiting alone does not establish that the key is wrong.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The target is Disabled: Enable the individual target and confirm that Stream Targets are enabled for the Live application.
- The target remains Waiting: Confirm the selected source stream is connected and flowing into Wowza; allow for the destination connection to initialize.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Compare the target host and application with the event’s Stream URL, and verify that Destination Stream Name contains the event’s generated key/code rather than its friendly label.
- Connection fails with otherwise correct-looking fields: Recheck that the URL was parsed into host and application correctly, that the application instance is blank, and that the port matches the event’s current instructions (normally RTMP port 1935).

Do not mix this with the Wowza Video workflow
Wowza Video is a different product with a different interface: its documentation describes adding a custom RTMP target and entering YouTube’s URL and key in primary URL and stream-name fields.
