In vMix, open Streaming Settings → Quality → Streaming Quality, set Encode Size to your intended output resolution, and enter a video bitrate in kbps based on YouTube’s live-encoder recommendations for your codec and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p60, 4 Mbps for 720p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p60. Those are starting points: your sustained upload capacity, encoding system, and stream-health results determine whether the settings are practical for a continuous channel.
Choose the output resolution and bitrate
Resolution and bitrate are separate controls. Resolution sets the encoded picture dimensions; bitrate sets how much data is used to carry the picture. Match the stream’s aspect ratio and frame rate to your production, then choose a bitrate from YouTube’s live encoder settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send.
| H.264 live output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
YouTube’s current help table does not state a publication year for these values; they were accessed on October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted transmission. Use the separate live-stream table rather than bitrate advice for uploaded videos. For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, consult the corresponding codec column and confirm that the vMix version and encoding hardware support the format you select.
Pick a sustainable profile
Higher resolution and frame rate increase the recommended H.264 bitrate and the demands on your internet connection and encoder. Consider the source material, motion, viewer needs, and the system’s ability to encode continuously. A 1080p60 output is not automatically preferable if the source is lower quality or your connection cannot sustain it reliably. There is no special 24/7 bitrate preset established by the cited vMix and YouTube guidance.

Set up the vMix stream
- In vMix, open the Stream control and its streaming settings. Choose the YouTube destination if available, or configure the current YouTube stream URL and key as a custom RTMP destination. vMix supports provider destinations and custom RTMP settings; its live-streaming overview describes streaming destinations and production inputs.
- Open Quality → Streaming Quality. Set Encode Size to the intended stream resolution, preserving the production’s aspect ratio. Select the intended vMix output as the stream source where your edition offers that choice; available output selection depends on the vMix edition.
- Set Video Bit Rates in kbps. For example, enter 10,000 kbps for a 10 Mbps target. Use the matching YouTube live-table recommendation as your starting point, not as a substitute for testing.
- For a broadly compatible configuration, use H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube’s live guidance also lists H.265 and AV1; vMix’s current guide describes H.264, AV1, and HEVC support where hardware support applies. Verify compatibility in your specific vMix installation before choosing a newer format.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. vMix also identifies two seconds as its recommended/default interval.
- Review the network buffer setting in the streaming quality panel. vMix describes it as the maximum number of seconds of data it can keep buffered; increasing it may help when maximum network speed is unreliable. A larger buffer can affect latency and cannot repair a failed internet connection.
- Where supported, use RTMPS rather than unencrypted RTMP. Select the RTMPS URL in YouTube Live Control Room if the encoder connection supports it; YouTube explains the encrypted connection in its RTMPS guide.
For the remaining encoder details and controls, see the vMix Streaming Quality guide and vMix Streaming Settings guide. Menu availability and output choices can vary by vMix edition and version.
Calculate the upload capacity you need
YouTube recommends that total streaming bitrate fit within the available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% upload headroom. The 20% is YouTube’s recommendation; it is not a guarantee that a connection will stay stable. Measure outbound upload speed, not download speed alone, and account for other traffic sharing the connection. If sending multiple streams at once, allow for their combined outgoing bitrates.

For a fixed 24/7 setup, wired Ethernet, a backup internet path, and backup power for the workstation and network equipment are practical ways to address common continuity risks. These are installation considerations, not a universal equipment prescription. Choose hardware and connectivity for your actual sources, encoding load, and network, then test them under normal operating conditions.
Test before relying on the channel
- Configure a private or unlisted test stream and confirm the encoder is sending the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Include representative movement and audio. YouTube advises testing before going live with the kind of sound and motion the real stream will contain.
- Check stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room, and review vMix’s streaming status. Address warnings before making the stream continuous.
- Measure actual upload capacity during ordinary network use and confirm that the stream has headroom. Observe the setup over time before treating it as dependable.
- If you have backup hardware or a second connection, test the transition on the actual installation and confirm viewers continue to receive the stream. Do not assume failover works until it has been tested.
YouTube explicitly recommends pre-stream testing and monitoring. The longer observation and failover checks above are operational advice for a continuous channel, not a stated YouTube requirement. YouTube cautions that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its guidance does not establish a universal 24/7 uptime design or settle account-specific continuous-stream limits and archive-retention behavior.

Troubleshoot common resolution and bitrate problems
- The stream looks soft or blocky: Check that Encode Size matches the intended output and that the bitrate follows the live recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm that the source itself contains the detail you expect; a higher output setting cannot restore detail absent from the source.
- YouTube reports connection or stream-health warnings: Check measured outbound capacity, shared network use, and whether the stream’s total bitrate has the recommended headroom. Test on a wired connection if available, and investigate disruptions rather than treating a larger buffer as a connection fix.
- The stream drops during a speed fluctuation: Inspect the connection and vMix status. The vMix buffer may help when maximum network speed is unreliable, but it does not fix a failed connection. Test any alternate internet path before depending on it.
- The selected codec will not start or is unavailable: Verify vMix version, edition, and hardware support. If compatibility is uncertain, test with H.264 video and AAC audio before changing formats.
- The picture is stretched or framed incorrectly: Check that the encode size preserves the production’s intended aspect ratio and that the selected output is the one you mean to stream.
- Keyframe settings do not match YouTube guidance: Set the interval to two seconds and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
