For one video, set VLC to repeat the current item; for several videos, use repeat-all or configure VLC’s VLM to play inputs in sequence and loop them. But VLC’s repeat control only handles local playback: it does not, by itself, connect the video to YouTube Live. You need a separate, compatible encoder feed and the right ingest settings in YouTube Live Control Room.
Choose the playback mode for your videos
VLC has two relevant repeat behaviors. VideoLAN’s playlist API distinguishes repeating the selected item from cycling through the whole playlist; the API describes the behavior, not a specific version’s button layout. VideoLAN playlist API

In VLC, open or create the playlist you want, then enable the repeat behavior that matches your goal. The precise control location and appearance can differ by VLC version and platform, so use the player’s repeat control and confirm its state rather than relying on a version-specific menu path. Test the sequence locally first: a repeated file or playlist is not necessarily a continuous YouTube broadcast.
Use VLM when you need a broadcast playlist
VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) reference describes a broadcast with successive inputs: the play command starts the first input and proceeds to the next, like a playlist. A broadcast’s loop option restarts the input list after its final input ends. VideoLAN VLM reference

That is a way to define the sequence and looping behavior inside VLC. It is not, on its own, a complete YouTube configuration. VLM setup requires specifying media inputs and a broadcast output; consult the reference for the syntax supported by your VLC build. Do not assume a command or output chain from another VLC version will work unchanged.
Keep the stream output open across files
VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 desktop documentation gives a playlist-broadcast example that uses sout-keep so the stream output stays open when one song ends and the next begins. Its example sends an HTTP stream to a receiver on a local network. It demonstrates output continuity in that context—not compatibility with YouTube’s ingest service or a guaranteed gap-free YouTube feed. VideoLAN VLC 3.0 streaming documentation

Accordingly, treat VLM looping and sout-keep as VLC-side continuity tools, not proof that YouTube will receive an uninterrupted stream. VLC playback, encoder output, and YouTube ingest are separate parts of the workflow.
Connect the playback to YouTube Live separately
- Check the current ingest setup. Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm which ingest protocol and encoder settings apply to your stream. Requirements depend on the protocol; do not copy settings for one protocol into another without checking.
- Configure a compatible encoder feed. VLC’s repeat controls do not supply or configure the YouTube ingest connection. Use an encoder configuration compatible with the current channel’s ingest settings. The available VLC documentation here does not establish a complete, current direct VLC-desktop-to-YouTube recipe, so no universal VLC output chain can be prescribed reliably.
- Test before relying on it. Verify that the encoder receives the intended sequence and that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed. Check a file transition as well as the point where a one-file or multi-file loop restarts.
YouTube’s official setup page cited here covers HLS specifically. It says HLS uses segments of 1–4 seconds and has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. Those are HLS-specific details, not general settings for every YouTube ingest protocol. Follow the current instructions for the protocol shown in your Live Control Room. What “without a gap” can—and cannot—mean
- Local playback: Repeat-current or repeat-all can make VLC restart an item or playlist. VLM can advance among inputs and loop the list.
- VLC output: VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 example uses
sout-keepto keep an HTTP stream output open between successive inputs. - YouTube delivery: A local loop does not establish that the encoder-to-YouTube connection remains live or that viewers see a seamless transition. Test the complete path; the cited VLC example is not a YouTube ingest test.
For a scheduled event or channel that must stay live, avoid promising viewers a gap-free result solely because VLC is looping. A transition, encoder behavior, connection interruption, or ingest configuration can affect what reaches YouTube.
Common problems and what to check
- The first video plays once, then stops: Check whether repeat-current or repeat-all is enabled and whether the selected mode matches a single file or a playlist.
- The next file does not play: Check the playlist order and whether each input is available to VLC. For a VLM broadcast, verify that each input is included in the broadcast definition and that the list is set to loop if it should restart.
- VLC keeps playing, but YouTube is not live: Repeat controls affect playback, not YouTube delivery. Check the separate encoder feed, the current stream key and ingest settings in Live Control Room, and whether YouTube is receiving the feed.
- The local-network example does not work with YouTube: Its documented destination is HTTP to a receiver, not YouTube. Do not treat that example as a YouTube-ready output configuration; verify a compatible ingest method and encoder settings.
- There is a pause or interruption between files: VLC’s documented
sout-keepexample is intended to keep its output open across successive inputs, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted viewer playback through YouTube. Test the actual encoder and ingest path, especially at file boundaries. - HLS settings do not match another protocol: The 1–4 second segment requirement and higher-latency note apply to YouTube’s HLS guidance, not universally to RTMP or all encoder configurations. Check the protocol selected for the stream.
Copyright and repeat-stream considerations
Before streaming a film, documentary, music track, or other recording, make sure you have the rights or permission needed to broadcast it on YouTube. Repeating a file does not change its copyright status. Review YouTube’s current policies and the rights attached to each source before going live; this article does not establish that any particular video is cleared for rebroadcast.
