To relay a YouTube Live broadcast through SRS on an Ubuntu VPS, run a pinned SRS release, let your encoder publish to that server, and configure SRS to forward the feed to the URL and stream key for your active YouTube live stream. Use the configuration that matches your SRS version, prefer YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint when supported, expose only the ports your setup needs, and test the full route in Live Control Room before going live.
What SRS does in a YouTube Live setup
SRS (Simple Realtime Server) is a media server that sits between your video source and YouTube. An encoder such as OBS or FFmpeg publishes to SRS on the VPS; SRS then forwards the feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube Live Control Room remains the place where you create the live stream, obtain its destination and key, check the preview, and start the broadcast.
SRS supports RTMP and other media delivery paths, but the forwarding configuration and available options depend on the release you install. Use the SRS documentation for that exact version rather than combining a newer binary with an older example. The project describes SRS 8.0 in its moving README; that project description is not an independent performance assessment.
Choose and pin an SRS deployment before configuring it
Decide which SRS release or container tag you will run, then use its matching build or Docker instructions and configuration syntax. SRS materials cover both source builds and Docker deployments, but a reproducible installation needs a specific release, Ubuntu image and architecture, plus a known configuration file. Avoid treating version-specific instructions as interchangeable.

| Approach | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Build from source | Follow the prerequisites and commands documented for the chosen release. The SRS v4 build guide recommends Ubuntu 20 for its documented v4 workflow; that is not a general recommendation for every SRS release or current Ubuntu image. SRS v4 build guide |
| Run a container | Pin the image tag, map only the ports your chosen configuration uses, and make configuration and logs persistent as needed. SRS documentation includes Docker examples, including one in the v7 RTMP documentation, which is labeled unstable. SRS v7 RTMP documentation |
Do not copy a legacy v3 or v4 configuration into a v7 or v8 server without checking compatibility. SRS documentation demonstrates source publishing and relay workflows, but it does not establish a VPS size that will suit every stream or prove performance for a particular workload. Select a VPS based on your actual source, stream settings, network allowance and testing rather than an assumed universal minimum. SRS RTMP documentation · SRS project README
Prepare YouTube Live credentials and the VPS network
- Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the active stream’s settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. The key tells your encoder or relay where to send the feed and should be treated like a password. A channel owner or manager can reset a compromised key. YouTube: stream keys
- Choose the YouTube destination. Prefer the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if your SRS forwarding method supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; retrieve the URL from the active stream rather than assuming an endpoint. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting
- Restrict VPS access. Allow inbound traffic for the publishing protocol and port used by your SRS configuration, and allow outbound connectivity from the VPS to YouTube’s ingest service. SRS examples use RTMP port 1935, while broader examples may include HTTP or API ports; they are not a checklist of ports to expose publicly. Restrict management interfaces and firewall rules to the services you actually use. SRS RTMP documentation
- Protect the key. Keep real credentials out of public tutorials, screenshots, shared configuration files and logs. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the forwarder. YouTube: stream keys
Connect your encoder, SRS and YouTube
- Install and start the pinned SRS release. Use its release-specific build or container guide, then start SRS with the configuration file intended for that version. Confirm the process is running and review its logs. The documented v4 build workflow includes process-status and log checks; use equivalent checks appropriate to your selected release. SRS v4 build guide
- Configure the incoming publishing path. Set your encoder to publish to the VPS using the application and stream name defined in your SRS configuration. SRS examples use a URL shaped like
rtmp://<server>/live/<stream>, but the application and path are configuration-dependent. SRS RTMP documentation - Configure forwarding to YouTube. In the matching SRS configuration or forwarding client, enter the exact RTMPS destination URL and stream key for the active YouTube stream. Do not assume a URL or key from another broadcast is still valid. YouTube: stream keys · YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting
- Start the source and inspect the route. Start the encoder publishing to SRS, then check SRS logs and the Live Control Room preview. YouTube’s encoder workflow says to start the encoder and check the preview before going live. Test with representative motion and audio, and check stream health before clicking Go Live. Set encoder quality to YouTube’s current guidance
Use the current YouTube encoder-settings table for the codec, resolution and frame rate you intend to stream; its recommendations can change. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as protocols and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a constant bitrate (CBR) mode. The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings
Rank #2
As one specific example, YouTube’s settings page lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate. Those are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a measured VPS bandwidth requirement. Leave capacity for network overhead and variation, then verify the actual stream’s health. Do not apply that example to other codecs, resolutions or frame rates without checking YouTube’s table.
YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio resembling the real broadcast. A 2160p/4K stream cannot use YouTube’s low-latency option and is set to normal latency. SRS configuration alone cannot establish a fixed end-to-end delay: encoding, network routes, YouTube processing and the viewer’s player all affect it. YouTube encoder settings

Choose an India VPS location by measuring your route
There is no universally best VPS city or provider for every broadcaster in India. Measure from the actual source location to candidate VPS locations, then assess the VPS-to-YouTube leg separately. Compare stability, packet loss, round-trip behavior, bandwidth or egress limits, cost and availability; also check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators during a real test. If the encoder itself runs on the VPS, test the relevant network paths for that arrangement. A city label or a single latency result does not establish that a location will be more reliable for every stream.
Troubleshoot the complete stream path
| Symptom | What to check and do |
|---|---|
| SRS does not start or the feed does not reach it | Check that the process is running, inspect its logs, confirm it loaded the intended configuration, and match the encoder’s application and stream name to the configured publishing path. Verify the relevant inbound firewall rule. SRS v4 build guide · SRS RTMP documentation |
| SRS receives the feed, but YouTube does not | Check outbound VPS connectivity, then verify the forwarding target is the URL for the active YouTube stream and the key is current. Prefer the exact RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if supported. YouTube: stream keys · YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting |
| RTMPS connection or SSL errors | Recheck the exact RTMPS URL and port provided by YouTube, confirm the forwarding client supports that connection, and check the firewall and TLS-related error details. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers RTMPS connection issues. YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting |
| YouTube shows no preview or unhealthy video | Confirm the encoder is publishing through SRS, inspect server logs, and test the full path using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and representative motion and sound. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check its stream-health messages before going live. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube encoder setup |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace it in the forwarding configuration. Do not continue using a potentially compromised credential. YouTube: stream keys |
| Viewers report delay | Separate relay and network delay from YouTube processing and viewer-player buffering. A legacy SRS v3 low-latency example is not evidence of guaranteed end-to-end YouTube latency. SRS v3 low-latency wiki |
Account for YouTube content rules before broadcasting
Using SRS does not change YouTube’s content requirements. Check that you have the rights needed for video, music and other material in the broadcast, and review YouTube’s live-stream rules and channel eligibility requirements in the current Help Center. A stream key or a successful preview is not a copyright clearance or guarantee that a stream can remain live. For recurring or pre-recorded programming, review YouTube’s current rules on reused content and monetization separately from technical ingest settings.
