You can install OBS Studio on an Ubuntu DigitalOcean Droplet, connect it to YouTube Live with a stream key, and send a broadcast over RTMPS. The unresolved part is whether a particular Droplet can reliably run your chosen graphics setup and encode your specific scene: OBS requirements vary by encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and no tested Droplet size is established here. Plan a workload-specific test rather than assuming a generic Droplet will work.
Before you begin: decide whether a cloud Droplet suits the broadcast
A Droplet can keep a server running independently of your home computer, but installing OBS is not the same as proving that OBS can encode and stream successfully on that virtual machine. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and an X Window System or Wayland among Linux requirements, and cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its CPU needs also vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS System Requirements.
For this setup, you also need a way to access a supported graphical desktop and to confirm which graphics and encoder options the virtualized host exposes. The available guidance does not establish a validated headless OBS procedure, guarantee a virtual GPU or hardware encoder on a standard Droplet, or document how to route a local webcam and microphone into a remote Droplet. If your production depends on live camera or local capture devices, resolve that architecture before relying on this setup.
DigitalOcean offers shared and dedicated CPU Droplet families, but its feature descriptions are not OBS performance benchmarks. Its generic 2-vCPU, 2-GB example is not an OBS sizing recommendation. There is no evidence-based “minimum Droplet size” to prescribe for every stream; choose a candidate and test the actual workload.

Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Create and secure an Ubuntu Droplet
- Choose a current Ubuntu LTS image. DigitalOcean recommends a current LTS release in its production-ready Droplet setup.
- Use SSH-key authentication and a non-root sudo account. Avoid routine administration as root.
- Configure the cloud firewall deliberately. DigitalOcean recommends permitting inbound SSH while allowing outbound traffic. Do not block outbound connections needed to reach YouTube’s ingest service.
- Consider backups and monitoring. Enable them as appropriate for the value and availability needs of your broadcast.
- Select a Droplet resource class as a test candidate, not a guaranteed encoder. Monitor actual CPU, memory, graphics and stream behavior during a representative broadcast before committing to a production event.
Install OBS Studio and check compatibility
The OBS Project’s Linux installation page, dated 2021-08-26, documents the Ubuntu PPA and apt route for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. Package availability and compatibility can change, so check that page and the OBS release offered by the package path against your Ubuntu image before proceeding.
- Connect to the Droplet and add the OBS Project PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio - Install OBS Studio:
sudo apt install obs-studio - Open OBS through a supported graphical desktop session. Confirm that the application launches and inspect the available video and encoder options before building the broadcast.
Do not assume that a standard cloud VM provides the same graphics environment as a desktop PC. The available sources do not certify a particular remote-desktop configuration or hardware-encoding path for DigitalOcean. Also check version-specific compatibility before pairing a newer OBS release with Ubuntu 24.04: an OBS Project announcement dated 2026-06-19 says OBS Studio 33 will no longer support Ubuntu 24.04. Consult the announcement and current release guidance for the exact version you plan to install.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Enable live streaming on the channel if needed. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours. Start this process well ahead of a planned broadcast; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one, then copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the custom service option as appropriate for the installed build, and enter the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not publish or share it; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Confirm the selected server and protocol in the encoder settings.
Choose an initial YouTube encoder profile
The following are YouTube Help / Google recommendations for H.264, accessed 2026-10-03. The support page does not display a publication year. These are encoder settings, not evidence that a particular Droplet can encode or sustain the stream.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube Help / Google guidance, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube Help / Google guidance, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | YouTube Help / Google guidance, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | YouTube Help / Google guidance, accessed 2026-10-03 |
For the stream, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, but the usable choice depends on what your installed OBS build and virtualized host expose. Start with a supported encoder and an output profile the Droplet can sustain; a higher resolution or frame rate raises the workload. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Where to set the values in OBS
In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the encoder and bitrate. Open Settings > Video to set the output resolution and frame rate. In the encoder’s available options, select CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Exact encoder labels and available controls can differ by OBS build and exposed hardware; if a setting is absent, do not assume that the host supports it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the full workload before going live
- Build the real scene. Include representative motion, overlays, sources and audio processing; a static blank scene is not a meaningful test for a more complex production.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream. Use the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scene and audio conditions planned for the actual broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS status. Watch for warnings, dropped frames or interruptions, and observe Droplet resource use throughout the test.
- Adjust one load factor at a time if unstable. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or evaluate another encoder or Droplet architecture. Repeat the representative test after each change.
- Do not promote a test result into a universal size recommendation. A stable result applies to the combination you tested, not every OBS scene or Droplet.
For a useful internal record, note the Ubuntu release, OBS version, Droplet CPU class and size, graphical environment, encoder, scene, output profile, bitrate and observed stability. This makes it possible to reproduce or reassess the tested configuration.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not install or the package is unavailable | Ubuntu release, PPA and package compatibility | Recheck the OBS Linux Installation guidance for your Ubuntu release and the package version currently offered. Do not assume an older installation page guarantees support for a newer OBS/Ubuntu combination. |
| OBS opens but video or encoder options are missing | Graphics session or virtualized host capabilities | Confirm OBS is running in a supported graphical session and inspect which graphics and encoder options the Droplet exposes. The documentation does not guarantee a virtual GPU or hardware encoder. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Stream URL, key, protocol, firewall or live enablement | Recheck the selected stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm outbound traffic is allowed, and verify that live streaming is enabled. If the key may be exposed, reset it. |
| Stream health reports instability or OBS drops frames | Encoding load, output settings or connectivity | Compare the chosen profile with YouTube’s recommended bitrate, then test a lower resolution or frame rate and a simpler scene. Monitor the Droplet and repeat the complete test. |
| First stream cannot start immediately | Channel live-streaming activation | If this is the channel’s first enablement, allow up to 24 hours as YouTube states, and complete activation before the planned event. |
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Only broadcast video and audio you have the rights or permission to use, including music, clips, images and other embedded material. A private or unlisted technical test does not grant rights to copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s current live-stream settings and channel guidance before broadcasting; platform rules and enforcement can change. A working encoder connection does not establish that the content is eligible to remain live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live by looping uploaded videos, rather than a live OBS camera-and-scene production, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not an OBS camera-input replacement. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
