To make a newly attached VPS disk usable, first identify it from Linux’s live device information, then create a filesystem only if needed, mount it at a directory, and add a UUID-based entry to /etc/fstab if it should return after reboot. The provider-specific attachment step comes first; the commands below are generic Linux guidance. Never assume a device such as /dev/sdb is the new disk without verifying it.
Before you start: attach and identify the disk
Attach the volume through your VPS provider’s control panel or CLI, following that provider’s current instructions. Linux cannot mount a volume the host does not yet see, and providers may require particular attachment steps or device handling.
On the VPS, inspect the devices and filesystem identifiers:
lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,LABEL,UUID,MOUNTPOINTS
sudo blkid
Compare the device tree, capacity, filesystem type, UUID, and mount points. Confirm that the candidate is not the boot or root device, swap, an existing data volume, or otherwise in use. The TYPE column and parent/child relationships help distinguish a whole disk from its partitions. If a volume was just attached and does not appear, device information may not have caught up; follow the discovery steps for your distribution and provider rather than guessing a device name. The lsblk manual notes that udev information can lag recently added or changed devices.

Choose the filesystem target and type
A simple data disk may use a filesystem directly on the whole device, or a partition table with a filesystem on a partition. Neither layout is universally right: consider whether you need multiple partitions, whether the provider or organization requires a layout, whether a filesystem already exists, and whether the volume must work with another operating system. The mkfs manual describes a partition as the usual target while allowing a block device; inspect your actual layout before choosing.
For a straightforward Linux-only data volume, ext4 is a reasonable general-purpose choice when provider rules and workload do not point elsewhere. It is not automatically the best filesystem for every workload or cross-platform requirement. See the ext4 manual and mke2fs manual.

Create a filesystem only if the target is confirmed
Formatting writes a filesystem to the selected device or partition and can destroy existing data. Stop if the target contains anything you need. If your confirmed layout uses a new partition for ext4, the command form is:
sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/CONFIRMED_PARTITION
Replace /dev/CONFIRMED_PARTITION with the exact partition you verified. If the confirmed layout deliberately uses the whole disk, use that verified device instead. Do not copy a guessed name such as /dev/sdb or assume every disk has a partition named /dev/sdb1. Prefer the filesystem-specific mkfs.ext4 utility to the generic mkfs frontend.

Mount the filesystem for immediate use
Create the intended mount-point directory, then mount the confirmed device there. This example uses /mnt/data; choose a path that fits your system and application layout.
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/data
sudo mount /dev/CONFIRMED_DEVICE /mnt/data
findmnt /mnt/data
Substitute the verified device or partition. Check that findmnt shows the expected source at /mnt/data, then check available space before directing applications to it. A mount attaches the filesystem at that point in Linux’s unified file tree; while mounted, the directory view underneath is covered. Plan the target path and any existing contents before mounting. To detach it later, use sudo umount /mnt/data after ensuring applications are no longer using it. See the mount manual.

Make the mount persistent with /etc/fstab
A manual mount is not a boot-time configuration. Get the new filesystem’s UUID with lsblk -f or sudo blkid, and confirm it belongs to this volume. Back up the existing /etc/fstab before editing; preserve its current entries.
Add an entry using the real UUID, mount point, filesystem type, options, dump field, and pass field. For a typical ext4 data volume, the pattern is:

UUID=REPLACE_WITH_REAL_UUID /mnt/data ext4 defaults 0 2
This is a template, not a literal UUID or universal option set. Use the actual filesystem type and the options appropriate for your system. UUID or LABEL identifiers are preferable to kernel names such as /dev/sdX, which can change as devices are added or removed. If filesystems have been cloned or copied, check that the UUID is unique. The fstab manual documents the entry fields and identifier tags; Red Hat’s RHEL 10 documentation also describes persistent UUID-based mounts.
Validate before rebooting:
sudo mount -a
findmnt /mnt/data
lsblk -f
If mount -a reports an error or findmnt does not show the expected mount, correct the entry before rebooting. Mount options and boot handling can depend on the distribution and the installed systemd and util-linux versions. For special or network-backed volumes, check the host’s manual and provider instructions; do not assume the generic example handles every boot scenario.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Formatting the system disk: stop before running
mkfsunless the target has been positively identified. Use the device tree and mounted paths to distinguish root and boot storage from the new volume. - Formatting the wrong layer: check whether the intended target is the whole disk or a partition. Match the command to the observed parent/child layout.
- Putting
/dev/sdXinfstab: replace it with the confirmed filesystem UUID or LABEL to avoid relying on device enumeration order. - Rebooting with a broken entry: run
sudo mount -aand inspect the result first. Be especially careful with devices that may not always be present and verify any provider- or distribution-specific options. - Expecting old directory contents to remain visible: mounting covers the directory’s previous view while the filesystem is mounted there. Choose the path deliberately and account for existing files before mounting.
- The volume is missing from
lsblk: confirm attachment in the provider environment and follow its current device-discovery procedure for your distribution. Do not try random device names.
