How to Set Up OBS on an Oracle Cloud Ubuntu VPS for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

A practical OCI Ubuntu 24.04 walkthrough for OBS and YouTube Live, including the display-session requirement, network setup, encoder settings, and realistic 24/7 testing.

You can run OBS Studio on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Ubuntu virtual machine and send its output to YouTube Live, but a VPS is not automatically a ready-to-use streaming PC. You must provide a Linux graphics/display session that OBS can use, allow administration and outbound streaming through the network, and test whether your chosen instance can sustain the encode. This guide uses Ubuntu 24.04 on x86_64 as a starting point; it does not prescribe a particular OCI shape or region because no shape-specific performance or uptime guarantee is established.

What you need before creating the VPS

  • An OCI account and a Compute instance using an Ubuntu 24.04 x86_64 platform image. Choose the region based on your administration needs and expected network route to YouTube, then validate the actual connection from that instance.
  • A shape with enough resources for your chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene. There is no universally established OCI shape for this workflow; vCPU count alone does not prove that an instance can encode continuously at a given quality.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube.
  • A display/session plan. OBS for Linux requires OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. A minimal server image may not provide a usable graphical session by default; a shell prompt alone does not satisfy that requirement.
  • A way to access the VPS securely, and a plan to monitor and recover the stream if the VM, OBS, display session, or network connection fails.

OBS warns that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record. Its CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Launch the Ubuntu instance and secure its network

  1. Create the Compute instance. In the OCI Console, create a Compute instance from an Ubuntu 24.04 x86_64 platform image. Select the VCN and subnet for your access design. A public IP can support direct internet administration; a bastion or other private-access method can avoid exposing SSH directly. Pick a shape that you can test under the intended workload rather than assuming a low-cost or Always Free shape will sustain it.
  2. Allow only the access you need. Prefer an OCI network security group (NSG) for instance-level rules; Oracle recommends NSGs over security lists. Permit SSH only from a trusted address range when direct SSH is used. The outbound-push workflow needs outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest service; it does not require opening an inbound YouTube port.
  3. Keep OCI and Ubuntu firewall controls distinct. VCN security rules and the guest operating system’s firewall are separate controls. Oracle’s Ubuntu platform-image guidance warns that UFW changes might prevent an instance from booting. Do not casually enable or edit UFW on the image; consult Oracle’s Ubuntu-specific guidance before changing host firewall rules.
  4. Confirm outbound reachability. Check that the subnet has an outbound route and that your network policy allows the VM to reach the internet. A successful SSH connection verifies administration access, not that OBS can sustain a stream to YouTube.

Install OBS on Ubuntu 24.04

Use the OBS Project’s current download and installation instructions for the exact Ubuntu image you selected. At the time covered by the available guidance, the OBS download page described its official Ubuntu PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. For that release, the listed commands are:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studio

These commands install OBS; they do not install or configure a desktop, X session, Wayland session, or virtual display. An older OBS Linux installation article gives generic Ubuntu 18.04-or-newer instructions, but that older statement should not be treated as confirmation of current package support for every Ubuntu release. Check the OBS Project’s current installation page before running commands if you choose a different image or if package guidance has changed.

Provide and test a Linux display session

OBS is a graphical application. The official Linux requirements specify OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. A default headless Ubuntu VPS may not supply either a running graphical session or the graphics support OBS needs. The available official guidance does not prescribe an OCI-specific virtual-display setup, so choose and test a display/session arrangement for your VM rather than treating a shell-only installation as sufficient.

  • Decide whether OBS will run in an actual desktop session, a virtual display arrangement, or another setup that you have validated for this instance.
  • Verify that the session is available when OBS starts, including after a reboot if unattended operation is required.
  • Launch OBS in that session and confirm that its preview renders. If the application cannot initialize its display or graphics, resolve that before configuring YouTube.
  • Record how the session starts and how OBS is launched. A process restart alone may not restore streaming if the display/session it depends on is unavailable.

Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS

  1. Activate live streaming. In YouTube, enable live streaming for the channel in advance. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the planned broadcast.
  2. Create a stream in Live Control Room. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in screenshots, source code, shell history, or logs.
  3. Configure OBS’s service and key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service and the RTMPS ingest option where offered, then enter the stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.
  4. Set the output to match the intended stream. In Settings > Output, select the streaming encoder and bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you will actually use. For standard SDR H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include the examples in the table below. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds.
  5. Set video and audio deliberately. In Settings > Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate that match your intended YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Its bitrate table has other values for other codecs and formats; select the corresponding row rather than applying an H.264 example to everything.
  6. Start privately and check the ingest. Start an unlisted or private test stream, then confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room before making a broadcast public.
Standard SDR H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates for the listed standard SDR H.264 modes, not an OCI bandwidth or performance guarantee. The VM needs sustainable outbound capacity above the configured stream bitrate to accommodate audio, protocol overhead, and variation. Test the full workload from the chosen instance and region.

Validate the 24/7 setup before relying on it

“24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee. No published shape-specific benchmark or end-to-end recipe establishes that a particular OCI instance, OBS display setup, and YouTube configuration will stay live continuously. Validate the exact system you intend to use before depending on it.

  • Display: OBS launches in the configured session and renders its preview.
  • Encoding: the selected encoder sustains the target resolution, frame rate, and scene without rendering or encoding lag under realistic load.
  • Ingest: YouTube Live Control Room receives a stable preview at the intended settings.
  • Network: outbound streaming remains stable over an extended test from the actual VM and region.
  • Recovery: test what happens after an OBS process exit, a VM reboot, a display-session failure, and a dropped YouTube connection. Do not assume that one kind of restart handles the others.
  • Operations: document the tested startup/supervision method, restart behavior, log location, alerting, stream-key handling, and manual recovery steps. Protect the key in any service configuration and avoid exposing it in logs.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

OBS will not open or shows a display/graphics error

Likely cause: the VM has no usable X/Wayland session, the session is not running for the OBS process, or the graphics environment does not meet OBS’s Linux requirements. What to check: verify the chosen display arrangement, confirm the session exists when OBS starts, and launch OBS from that session. Installing the package by itself does not provide a desktop.

YouTube does not show an incoming preview

Likely causes: live streaming is not yet activated, the stream key or service selection is wrong, or outbound routing is blocked. What to check: confirm channel activation in YouTube, re-enter the correct key in OBS’s streaming settings, select YouTube/RTMPS, and verify the subnet route and outbound policy. Do not solve an outbound problem by opening an unrelated inbound port.

The stream connects but drops or buffers

Likely causes: unstable egress, insufficient sustainable network capacity, or an output configuration the instance cannot sustain. What to check: compare the actual output codec, resolution, and frame rate to YouTube’s bitrate guidance; test sustained outbound capacity with headroom; and reduce the workload for diagnosis. OCI egress capacity for a particular instance and region is not established by the bitrate recommendations.

OBS reports encoding or rendering lag

Likely cause: the chosen encoder and workload exceed what the tested VM and graphics setup can sustain. What to check: inspect OBS’s status indicators, simplify scenes, or lower output resolution/frame rate and retest. A vCPU count alone cannot establish encoding capacity.

OBS does not resume after a reboot or disconnect

Likely cause: OBS startup, its display session, or its connection recovery is not configured or tested for that failure. What to check: verify each failure mode separately, including whether the display/session starts before OBS and whether YouTube reconnects. Keep a manual recovery procedure and do not describe the setup as guaranteed unattended service unless the behavior has been verified.

The VM becomes inaccessible after firewall changes

Likely cause: a host firewall change may conflict with the OCI Ubuntu image’s networking or boot behavior. Oracle warns that UFW changes might prevent boot. What to check: use OCI’s recovery/access options and follow Oracle’s Ubuntu-specific firewall guidance before attempting further rule changes.
