YouTube’s built-in membership alert appears in live chat: when someone joins during a live stream, YouTube posts a bright green “New Member” message and pins the member’s profile picture at the top of chat for five minutes. It is not a graphic added to the video itself. You do not need to turn on members-only chat or make the stream members-only to get this native alert.
What YouTube’s native membership alert does
YouTube’s documented new-member alert is a live-chat event. A viewer who joins your channel during its live stream triggers the green “New Member” message, and their profile picture is pinned at the top of chat for five minutes. It does not automatically put a custom alert box or animation into the stream’s video output. YouTube Help: channel memberships and perks
For a continuous broadcast, this is the simplest documented way to make a new membership visible to people watching and reading chat. It is separate from an alert graphic created by an encoder or third-party service.
Choose the audience setting that matches your goal
Keep the stream public, but limit who can chat
Members-only chat lets everyone watch a public stream while reserving chat messages for channel members. It is optional; it is not required for YouTube’s native new-member message. YouTube Help: members-only live chat

- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Create, then Go live.
- Select Stream, then create a stream or reuse a previous stream’s settings.
- Open the stream settings.
- Under Live chat, select Enable members-only chat.
- Click Save.
After this change, nonmembers can still view the public broadcast but cannot post in its chat.
Restrict the broadcast itself to members
If only paying members should be able to watch, set the live stream’s visibility to All paid members or select the membership level allowed to view it. YouTube says live-stream access requires a verified channel and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help: members-only videos and live streams

You can also switch a public stream to members-only from Live Control Room after going live. YouTube currently limits that transition feature to desktop streams that are not vertical. The switch creates separate public and members-only stream segments; eligible members continue to the exclusive segment, while nonmembers are prompted to join or upgrade.
Members-only visibility controls who can watch; members-only chat controls who can write messages. Neither setting is necessary for the native New Member chat event.

When to add a separate on-screen alert
If you want an animation or alert box inside the video, rather than YouTube’s chat message, you need a separate overlay setup. YouTube identifies its Live Chat API as a way for external applications to read, send, and moderate live-chat messages, and its Channel Memberships API as a way for external applications to read and manage membership data. The official guidance cited here does not establish a current provider’s exact setup steps, whether its alerts persist through a long-running session, or how it reconnects after an interruption. Before choosing an overlay, check that provider’s current documentation for YouTube membership-event support, the required connection method, session limits, and reconnection behavior. Test it on the encoder and stream configuration you intend to use; do not assume a short test proves it will remain connected indefinitely.

Keep the alert plan practical for an always-on broadcast
- Decide whether the alert needs to appear in chat, in the video, or both. YouTube’s native event is a chat message and temporary profile pin.
- If using a third-party overlay, confirm its own current instructions and long-running connection behavior with the provider.
- Plan for interruptions: the cited YouTube material does not specify an alert service’s recovery procedure or guarantee alert delivery after a disconnection.
- YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, but the guidance cited here does not specify computer hardware requirements. A dedicated computer is not established as necessary for every encoder-based setup.
