You can create up to five profiles on one Netflix account, including Kids profiles. Profiles give household members separate recommendations, viewing histories, My Lists, ratings, language and playback settings, and maturity controls. They do not create separate subscriptions or increase the number of devices that can stream at once.
Netflix intends profiles for people who live together in one household. Someone living elsewhere generally needs an eligible extra-member slot or a separate account.
How many profiles can one Netflix account have?
Netflix allows a maximum of five profiles per account. The main profile cannot be deleted, and a Kids profile counts toward the same five-profile limit. A profile is a personalization space, not an independent membership, payment arrangement, household, or guaranteed stream.
Extra-member accounts are separate from the main account’s profile limit: Netflix says an extra member gets one profile and cannot create additional profiles.

For a household of five or fewer regular viewers, a practical arrangement is an owner profile, adult profiles, and one or two Kids profiles. Avoid a single shared “family” profile if personalized recommendations matter; everyone’s viewing will influence the same history and suggestions.
What a profile keeps separate
- Name and profile icon
- Recommendations and viewing activity
- My List and ratings
- Playback, subtitle-appearance, language, and notification preferences
- Maturity level and viewing restrictions
- Profile lock settings
- Game handle and saved games where supported
Feature availability differs on Kids profiles. Profiles also do not make the account private from its owner: the account owner controls membership, billing, and profile management. See Netflix’s current profile details at Netflix Help.
Before you create a profile
- Sign-in access to the Netflix account.
- The account password and, if requested, the main profile’s PIN.
- A supported device. Netflix says profiles are unavailable on devices made before 2013.
- A current web browser as a fallback if the TV or app does not show profile-management controls.
Labels vary by country, app version, TV platform, and device age. The browser method is usually the most reliable.
Create a profile in a web browser
- Sign in to Netflix.
- Open Manage Profiles.
- Select Add Profile.
- Enter the person’s name.
- Select Kids if the profile should use the Netflix Kids experience.
- Select Continue or Save.
- Repeat until the account has five total profiles.
Netflix may request the main profile’s PIN. When successful, the new profile appears on the profile-selection screen and can be selected independently. If the control is missing, use Netflix.com in a current browser.
Create a profile on a TV or streaming device
- Open Netflix.
- Go to the profile-selection screen.
- Select Add Profile+.
- Enter the profile name.
- Choose Kids when appropriate.
- Select Continue or Save.
The exact wording and location can differ between smart TVs, streaming sticks, game consoles, and set-top boxes. If the option is absent, use the browser route.
Create a profile in the Android or iPhone/iPad app
- Open the Netflix app.
- Select My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Select Manage Profiles.
- Select Add Profile.
- Enter the name, choose Kids if needed, and save.
Edit or delete profiles
Open the profile-management area and select a profile to rename it, change its icon, adjust language or playback preferences, set maturity restrictions, or configure a profile lock. Netflix notes that maturity-rating changes may require a browser rather than some TVs or streaming devices.
Most profiles can be deleted, but the main profile cannot. Either the profile being deleted or the main profile must be active. Deletion removes that profile’s viewing history and game saves, so do not use it as a casual recommendation “reset.” Netflix documents these controls at https://help.netflix.com/en/node/10421.

Protect profiles and children with PINs
A profile lock stops someone from entering a selected profile. For an adult profile:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open account or profile settings.
- Select the profile to protect.
- Choose Profile Lock.
- Create a four-digit PIN and save it.
- Test the lock from the profile-selection screen.
For children, use a Kids profile, set its maturity level and viewing restrictions, and lock unrestricted adult profiles. Keep the account password, profile-management access, and main-profile PIN private. Device-level parental controls may still be necessary because a Kids profile does not protect account settings from someone who can access the account owner’s credentials. Netflix’s parental-control overview is at https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/guide-to-netflix-parental-controls.
Profiles versus simultaneous streams
These are separate limits:
| What you are counting | Netflix rule | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Profiles | Up to five per main account | Personalization and viewing spaces |
| Simultaneous screens | Plan-dependent; Netflix describes one to four | How many devices can watch at the same time |
| Extra-member profile | One profile | One outside-household member where supported |
For example, five profiles do not allow five simultaneous programs. A plan supporting two screens still allows only two devices to watch at once, regardless of the number of profiles. Check the plan in your country because quality, downloads, screen limits, and availability vary. Netflix’s device and streaming guidance is at https://help.netflix.com/en/node/558253171161700.
Can someone outside your home use a profile?
Netflix says an account is for people who live together in one Netflix Household. Profiles are appropriate for parents, children, partners, and roommates at the primary residence—not as a permanent way to give a relative or friend in another household access.
Someone outside the household generally needs an eligible extra member slot or a separate account. Extra-member availability depends on country, plan, and billing provider; Netflix says extra members are unavailable on ad-supported plans and some third-party-billed packages. The extra member must activate in the same country where the account was created, and the extra-member account has one profile.

Temporary travel is different from maintaining another household. Netflix may show I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and send a one-time verification code when a member uses a device away from home. Repeated use from another location can trigger household verification. See Netflix’s household and extra-member guidance.
When an extra member is not enough
An extra member is suitable only when one outside-household person needs one profile and the account supports the feature. Netflix’s documentation indicates that someone who needs multiple profiles, a separate payment method, or more than one simultaneous device in their household needs a separate account. Extra-member details are also described at https://help.netflix.com/nl/node/123279.

|---|---|---|---|
| Main account | Up to 5 | People in one household | Shared profile ceiling and plan stream limit |

| Separate account | Account-specific | Independent household, billing, or viewing needs | Separate subscription |
Profile transfers when someone leaves
If Netflix offers Transfer Profile for the account, an eligible profile may move to a new or extra-member account with recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings. Transfer is not duplication: it does not leave a copy behind or raise the five-profile ceiling. Eligibility can vary by plan, country, and account state; Netflix documentation indicates that the main profile, Kids profiles, and PIN-protected profiles may be restricted in some transfer flows.
Netflix announced profile transfer as part of its paid-sharing changes at https://about.netflix.com/en/news/paying-to-share-netflix-outside-your-household. Use the option only if it appears in your account.

“Add Profile” is missing
- Count every profile, including Kids profiles; five is the maximum.
- Sign in through a current browser and open Manage Profiles.
- Update or restart the Netflix app and device.
- Check whether you are using an extra-member account, which supports one profile.
- Contact Netflix support if the browser route also fails.
Netflix asks for a PIN
The request may be for the main profile’s PIN or a profile-lock PIN. Do not repeatedly guess; use the account owner’s recovery method or Netflix support.
The new profile has unsuitable recommendations
- Confirm that the intended profile is selected.
- Check that another person is not using it.
- Remove unwanted viewing activity where Netflix permits it.
- Keep one person’s viewing on one profile.
A child can open an adult profile
Use a Kids profile, lock every unrestricted adult profile, and protect the account password and main-profile PIN. Add device-level parental controls when needed.
Someone outside the household cannot watch
Confirm whether they are part of the Netflix Household, then check extra-member availability, plan and billing restrictions, and whether a separate account is required. Creating another profile does not bypass those rules.
The profile limit is reached
Delete an unused profile only if you accept the loss of its history and saved games. Otherwise keep the five profiles and use a separate account for the additional person, or transfer an eligible profile if Netflix offers that option.
Choose the right arrangement
Use one account with profiles when
- Everyone lives in the same household.
- Five profiles are sufficient.
- The household accepts the plan’s simultaneous-stream limit.
- One account owner can manage billing and security.
Use an extra member when
- The person lives outside the household.
- The country, plan, and billing provider support extra members.
- One profile and the available concurrent viewing are enough.
Use a separate account when
- There are more than five regular users.
- Users live in different households or countries.
- Someone wants independent billing or recovery.
- Someone needs multiple profiles or additional simultaneous-stream capacity.
Do not use VPNs, unofficial shared-account marketplaces, browser extensions claiming unlimited profiles, or password-sharing services to bypass Netflix’s limits. They do not create official profile capacity and can introduce access, payment, security, and policy problems.

Does each profile need its own email address?
No. Profiles are created inside the account; they are not separate memberships with separate billing.
Can two people watch on different profiles at the same time?
