Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo restart a YouTube encoder automatically on a Contabo VPS, run it as a foreground process under systemd, configure a restart policy, and enable the service at boot. This can relaunch an encoder that exits; it cannot repair a missing video source or guarantee that YouTube resumes the same live event. Test recovery in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
What automatic restart can—and cannot—do
A systemd service can start an encoder when the VPS boots and relaunch it after a process failure. That is different from rebooting the VPS: a service restart affects the encoder, while a server reboot interrupts every process on the virtual server. Contabo recommends using the operating system to reboot when it is accessible; a control-panel reboot shuts down and restarts the server. See Contabo’s reboot guidance.
Process supervision is only one layer of recovery. It does not fix a bad stream key, inaccessible source file, broken network, VPS failure, or YouTube ingest problem. A service can show as active while the feed is unhealthy, so also inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health: encoder settings and stream health.
Before configuring systemd
- Confirm the VPS distribution and version, available memory and storage, and the account that will run the encoder. Contabo VPS families differ in shared CPU, memory, storage, and network resources; check the Contabo VPS documentation and your actual server.
- Install your chosen encoder using instructions for that operating system. First run it interactively with the intended source and confirm it can connect to YouTube. Encoder installation commands and arguments vary by distribution and media source.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and obtain the server URL and stream key for the intended stream. YouTube says the key functions like a password and address for accepting the feed; keep it secret. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Use the RTMPS server URL YouTube supplies when your encoder supports it. RTMPS requires the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, and port 443. An incorrect protocol, host, or port can prevent connection. Details: YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
Configure the encoder and YouTube stream
Set the encoder to YouTube’s displayed server URL and stream key. Do not assume a fixed ingest endpoint when YouTube supplies one for the stream. Keep the key out of public scripts, shared logs, and world-readable service files or shell history. A safer general pattern is a root-owned environment file with restrictive permissions, readable only by the service account; adapt ownership and file paths to your distribution and unit configuration.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose encoder settings appropriate to the source and available upload capacity. YouTube’s current guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the current table rather than treating one bitrate as universal: YouTube encoder settings.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options govern encoder-triggered start and stop behavior. They are separate from the Linux service policy: systemd can relaunch the process, but the YouTube event’s state and viewer-visible continuity still need to be checked. See Manage live stream settings.

Create a systemd service for the encoder
The exact unit depends on the Linux distribution, encoder, media source, and secret-storage method; the outline below is not a copy-and-paste unit for every Contabo VPS. Use a dedicated service account where practical, set the correct working directory and command, and ensure the encoder stays in the foreground. If it daemonizes and exits, systemd may supervise the wrong process.
- Prepare the command. Verify the complete encoder command interactively, including the input source, output URL, and secure retrieval of the key. Do not publish or paste a real key into a shared terminal history.
- Write a unit for your system. In the unit’s service section, specify the service user, working directory, and encoder command. Choose an appropriate restart policy, such as
Restart=on-failureto retry failures orRestart=alwaysto restart after any exit, and add a modestRestartSecdelay to avoid a rapid failure loop. Confirm the policy matches your intended behavior and systemd version. - Reload and enable the service. After saving the unit in the systemd service location for your distribution, reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service at boot, and start it. Use the service name you chose; commands and unit paths can vary across systems.
- Check both sides of the connection. Inspect the unit’s status and journal, then check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. “Active” alone does not confirm a healthy feed.

Test restart and boot recovery
- Use a test event and confirm the stream appears in Live Control Room before testing failure recovery.
- Stop the encoder process deliberately using a controlled test method. Verify that systemd starts it again and inspect the journal for the exit reason and retry.
- Check the YouTube preview and health messages after the relaunch. Do not assume that process recovery means the same broadcast resumed.
- If recovery after a VPS reboot is required, test a planned operating-system reboot and confirm the service starts at boot. A reboot affects all workloads, so schedule it accordingly.
- Review repeated retries rather than leaving a broken service in a failure loop. Correct the source, credentials, URL, permissions, or network problem before trusting automatic recovery.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Service does not start after reboot | It was not enabled at boot, the unit has an error, or dependencies are unavailable. | Check the unit status and journal, verify the unit name and boot enablement, and confirm required files and network dependencies are available. |
| Service starts, then repeatedly exits | The command fails, the source is unavailable, permissions are wrong, or the process exits normally while the restart policy expects it to remain running. | Read the service journal, run the command interactively under the intended account, verify the working directory and file access, and ensure the encoder remains in the foreground. |
| Encoder cannot connect to YouTube | Wrong stream key, server URL, protocol, host, or port; network restrictions may also interfere. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, prefer the supplied RTMPS URL when supported, and confirm RTMPS uses the valid YouTube endpoint and port 443. |
| systemd reports active but YouTube shows no healthy feed | The encoder process is alive but its input or output is not working, or YouTube has not accepted a usable feed. | Check encoder logs and input availability, then verify the preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room. |
| Encoder restarts but the broadcast does not continue as expected | Process restart and YouTube event recovery are separate; stream-key reuse or auto-start settings do not establish that every interrupted event resumes. | Check the event state and settings in Live Control Room. YouTube’s help pages do not promise universal reconnection to the same broadcast after every interruption. |
| Retries consume resources without recovery | A persistent configuration or source problem is causing each new process to fail. | Use a restart delay, inspect repeated journal entries, and fix the underlying failure instead of treating retries as a repair. |
When to restart the service or reboot the VPS
| Approach | What starts again | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart the systemd encoder service | The encoder process | The encoder exited, or it needs to start after a normal server boot | Does not repair a broken source, credentials, network, or YouTube broadcast state. |
| Reboot from the operating system or Contabo panel | The whole virtual server | The operating system or server needs a broader recovery action | Interrupts all workloads on the VPS; use only when a process-level restart is insufficient. See Contabo’s reboot guidance. |
