For network drops, compare the configured bitrate with repeatable upload measurements from the VPS, lower it to a rate the connection can sustain, and retest against YouTube’s current encoder settings. If drops persist at a conservative bitrate, collect OBS logs and route and resource measurements before asking Contabo to investigate.
Identify what OBS means by “dropped frames”
Open OBS’s Stats window and inspect the relevant counters while streaming. OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from frames missed because rendering is behind and frames skipped because encoding is overloaded. Treating all three as “dropped frames” can lead to the wrong fix.
- Dropped frames (network): the connection from OBS on the VPS to the remote ingest server is unstable, or the configured bitrate is beyond what that connection can sustain. OBS describes this as a network issue between the stream source and ingest server in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render frames quickly enough, often because the scene or graphics workload is too demanding for the available resources.
- Encoding lag: the selected encoder cannot encode frames at the required rate with the available CPU or GPU resources.
Check the current OBS log as well as the live counter. If rendering or encoding lag is increasing rather than network-dropped frames, use OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting: reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify costly scenes, and check resource use. On a VPS, confirm the actual CPU, GPU availability, and encoder in use; do not assume a desktop GPU encoder is available.
Lower the bitrate to fit stable VPS upload capacity
Record the OBS output bitrate, then measure sustained upload throughput from the VPS under conditions representative of the stream. A speed-test peak is only a starting point: other server traffic, transient congestion, protocol overhead, and route variation can reduce the capacity available continuously to YouTube. Repeat measurements rather than treating one result as a guarantee.

- Note the configured video bitrate and the time at which the network-dropped counter rises.
- Measure sustained upload throughput from the VPS to an appropriate test endpoint, and repeat the measurement during representative operating conditions.
- Lower the OBS video bitrate, then repeat a comparable stream test while monitoring the same counter.
- Continue using a conservative rate if the counter stops rising; if it continues to rise, test further reductions and preserve the results.
OBS suggests about 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not as a guaranteed safe rate. Leave room for variation and other traffic. The relevant capacity is a stable path from this VPS toward the ingest server—not simply the VPS interface speed or a brief test result. Match YouTube’s ingest settings without exceeding the path
Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you use, and monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Those are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular VPS route can sustain either rate; choose a lower bitrate if measurements show that is necessary.

- Use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the ingest server and protocol in the applicable YouTube and OBS configuration.
- Test with motion and audio similar to the actual program, rather than relying only on a static scene or a short speed test.
Lowering bitrate can reduce video quality, so make the change in measured steps and verify both OBS’s counters and YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can help as a congestion workaround, but OBS does not present it as a root-cause fix.
Isolate route and configuration problems
If the selected bitrate fits repeatable stable throughput but network drops continue, change one variable at a time. Record the original setting, the change, test duration, bitrate, and counter behavior; this makes results comparable and lets you revert unhelpful changes.

- Try another available YouTube stream server/ingest option and compare results.
- For diagnosis only, compare with another streaming service if one is available to you. A different result can help isolate an ingest or route-specific issue; it does not establish a general performance result for the VPS.
- Make sure OBS’s Bind to IP setting is Default unless a specific network configuration requires otherwise.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or security software, or network-priority/optimization software is affecting the connection.
- OBS documents network optimizations, TCP pacing, and IPv4-only testing for Windows. Apply these only where relevant to the VPS operating system; if changing IP family makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
Some desktop-oriented OBS suggestions do not apply to every Linux VPS. Use the operating system and network configuration actually present rather than applying every suggested toggle.
Understand what Contabo’s bandwidth figures do—and do not—tell you
Contabo’s current support guidance says VPS and VDS port speeds range from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps and describes fair-use conditions. That published range is not a guarantee of sustained throughput from an individual VPS to YouTube ingest, and it does not by itself diagnose packet loss, congestion, or routing. Contabo’s separate traffic rules describe package-specific outgoing traffic allowances and port throttling after ten consecutive days above the applicable package allowance. This is a policy condition, not a diagnosis of the YouTube route. Confirm which terms apply to your specific product and account rather than assuming a package threshold applies universally.

- When the issue began, exact timestamps of tests, and which applications are affected.
- The OBS log, configured bitrate, the precise counter that rises, and whether lowering bitrate changes the drop rate.
- Repeat upload measurements and traceroute results, with the relevant destination and test times.
- CPU, RAM, and disk metrics during the issue; traffic type; any NIC settings changed; and active services and ports.
- The Contabo product and relevant traffic-policy details you have confirmed for the account.
Specific timestamps and repeatable comparisons make it easier to distinguish a resource problem from a connection or route issue. Do not treat the plan’s nominal port speed as proof that the end-to-end YouTube path is healthy.
Do not confuse sender-side drops with viewer buffering
This troubleshooting path concerns frames dropped by OBS while sending. Viewer buffering can happen even when OBS is not dropping frames; OBS covers that separate symptom in its stream buffering troubleshooting guidance. Fixing sender-side drops therefore does not guarantee that every viewer playback issue is resolved.
