You can keep a YouTube stream running from Ubuntu by sending an input to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, then supervising FFmpeg so it restarts if the process exits. The host, source and upload connection still need to work: a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio. This guide covers the setup, checks and failure points for an India-based channel without assuming a particular VPS or network provider.

Before you start: check YouTube Live eligibility

Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Check the channel’s Live Control Room before building an unattended setup; first-time activation timing can vary, and there is no universal delay established for every channel. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Decide what FFmpeg will send: a prerecorded file, playlist, camera, or another input FFmpeg can read. A local Ubuntu machine must remain powered on and connected. A VPS can keep the process remote from your home, but its region alone does not guarantee a better route to YouTube or enough compute and sustained upload capacity. Choose based on the input’s location, encoding workload, reliability and budget.

Use only video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. Owning a copy of a track or film does not by itself grant streaming rights. YouTube may restrict streams for policy or copyright issues; review its streaming restrictions guidance.

Install and verify FFmpeg on Ubuntu

Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source appropriate to your Ubuntu release, then inspect the installed build before configuring an unattended stream. Available encoders and protocol support differ between builds, so confirm that yours supports the encoder you intend to use and the RTMPS workflow. The official FFmpeg protocols documentation describes protocol options but is not a validated Ubuntu deployment recipe.

Check the build’s available encoders and protocols using its help output, and test a short local encode before involving YouTube. If you plan to re-encode with H.264, confirm that the build includes the encoder you select, such as libx264. Do not assume that every Ubuntu package has identical capabilities.

Get the YouTube RTMPS destination and protect the key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the channel’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live event if needed.
  2. Open the event’s stream settings and copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; use the URL displayed for your event rather than a remembered server address. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and stream settings and key guidance.
  3. Treat the key as a credential. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories and world-readable service files, and avoid exposing it in logs. If it is disclosed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your configuration.

Choose settings for the source and connection

Set resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate and audio to match both the material and the upload connection. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; for H.264, its current table recommends the following figures. These are YouTube-published settings, not measurements of your connection.

H.264 output YouTube minimum YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube lists separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265; consult its current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions if you use either. The platform recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Test with the actual source and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback before making an event public. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate; leave headroom rather than treating the listed minimum as a dependable target.

For H.264 with an FFmpeg encoder such as libx264, the settings commonly map to options such as -c:v libx264, -b:v, and encoder-appropriate rate-control limits such as -minrate and -maxrate. Audio may use -c:a aac. The keyframe interval option -g is expressed in frames, so calculate it from the chosen frame rate to target two seconds. Use an output format compatible with the YouTube RTMPS destination. The exact command depends on the source’s frame rate, timestamps, duration, installed encoder and whether it needs looping; no single command is safe for every input.

Build and test the FFmpeg command

Construct the command with the actual input and event credentials held securely. Do not paste a real stream key into a public script or share it when asking for help. Before creating a persistent service, run a short test event and check both the FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the selected resolution and frame rate are right, and stream health is acceptable.

If you are streaming a finite recording continuously, arrange an intentional repeat or playlist strategy and test the transition across the file boundary. Timestamp and loop behavior depend on the input and installed FFmpeg build. Verify any loop option against that build’s documentation and test it rather than assuming a flag will behave identically for every file. A camera or other live input instead needs a plan for what happens when that input disappears.

Keep FFmpeg running with process supervision

On Ubuntu, a systemd service with a restart policy is a reasonable way to start a tested command at boot and restart it after a process exit. Treat a unit file as an example to adapt, not a guaranteed recipe: configure a restricted environment or credential file for the key, use the correct service user and paths, and verify that the service can read the input. Avoid putting the key in a broadly readable unit file.

After enabling the service, test a reboot, confirm the process starts, deliberately test recovery from a process exit, and inspect service logs. A restart policy can relaunch a failed FFmpeg process; it cannot restore a missing source, fix an internet outage, or prove YouTube is receiving usable media. Monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health messages as well as the local service status. YouTube’s encoder guidance also advises testing and monitoring stream health during a broadcast.

Plan for a broadcast longer than 12 hours

A 24/7 output raises a separate question from process uptime: whether the YouTube event, archive and DVR behavior meet your needs. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for live streams longer than 12 hours. Decide whether to use a single scheduled event or repeated sessions, and verify the resulting archive and viewer controls in your own channel; the available guidance does not prescribe one universal design. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no stream: confirm that the event is ready in Live Control Room, the copied RTMPS URL and key belong to that event, and the host can reach the endpoint. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the service configuration.
  • The process is active but stream health is poor: check YouTube’s health messages, then verify input playback, audio, frame rate and bitrate. Compare your H.264 target with YouTube’s resolution-specific recommendations and test sustained upload capacity with headroom.
  • The service repeatedly restarts: inspect its logs for an invalid input path, unsupported encoder, permissions problem or command error. Test the command interactively under the same service account before relying on boot automation.
  • A recording stops at its end or breaks at the transition: the input is finite and does not have a working repeat strategy, or timestamps are incompatible at the boundary. Test the loop on the installed build and check both output and YouTube ingest through a complete transition.
  • The stream stops after a network or host outage: a process restart cannot restore a failed connection or unavailable input. Check the host, network and source first, then verify that YouTube is receiving healthy media after FFmpeg reconnects.
  • The stream or archive behaves differently after many hours: inspect the event session and DVR/archive controls. DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, so do not assume a continuous session behaves like a short event.

What an India-based setup changes—and what it does not

The FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow is the same whether your Ubuntu host is in India or elsewhere. A local Indian connection or an India-region VPS still needs sufficient sustained upload capacity and a route that works reliably to YouTube ingestion. This guide does not establish a best Indian VPS provider, current plan price or network performance; compare those against your own source, encode load and tested stream.
