To keep product videos playing on YouTube around the clock, send a planned video loop or playlist to YouTube Live through an encoder. First enable live streaming on your channel, then create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connect it with the server URL and stream key, test it, and arrange monitoring and recovery. YouTube’s setup guidance does not promise that a single live event can run indefinitely, so plan for interruptions and stream restarts.
What “always-on” means on YouTube
YouTube does not offer a special always-on channel mode. An encoder sends a continuous feed to a live event; the video source can be a looping product demonstration or a playlist rather than a live camera. The encoder may be software running on a computer or standalone hardware. If you want a designed presentation with repeated clips, graphics, or external camera and audio inputs, an encoder workflow is the relevant option.
There is an important limit to plan around: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its setup instructions do not promise that a single live event can run forever or establish what happens to every stream longer than 12 hours. Check YouTube’s current behavior before building a schedule around longer sessions, and decide how you will restart the event if needed. YouTube’s encoder-stream setup guidance
Prepare your channel and content
Check live-stream eligibility
- Verify the YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- If the channel has never streamed, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio early. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Choose whether the event will be public, private, or unlisted. Confirm that the intended account can access the channel and Live Control Room.

Prepare a deliberate product loop
Arrange the video clips in an order that makes sense to someone joining midway through. Identify products clearly, keep demonstrations accurate, and make sure claims, prices, and availability shown in the video will not become misleading while the feed repeats. If the presentation relies on a spoken introduction or a call to action, consider how it will sound to viewers who join at a random point in the loop.
Check that you have the rights needed for every video, image, and audio track. Copyright compliance matters for streaming and for YouTube Shopping eligibility; owning a product does not mean you own the rights to music used in its demonstration.
Create a YouTube encoder stream
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or choose an encoder stream.
- Set the event details: Add a clear title and description, select visibility, and set the other available stream metadata. State plainly that the broadcast is a repeating product-video presentation if that is what viewers will see.
- Copy the connection details: Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s server and key fields. YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s “password and address.” Treat the key like a password; reset it if exposed, then update the encoder with the new key.
- Choose continuity controls: YouTube’s settings include auto-start and auto-stop. These can let the encoder control when the event starts and stops, but they are not a guarantee of indefinite runtime. Choose latency and DVR settings for the viewing experience you want. DVR lets viewers pause and resume; lower latency can increase playback buffering, and may offer little benefit for a mostly unattended showcase with limited real-time interaction.

Choose an encoder and configure stream quality
YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders; it does not require a particular brand. The right choice depends on the production inputs, setup complexity, cost, and how you will detect and recover from failures. A computer-based encoder can be convenient if you already have a suitable machine, while a hardware encoder may suit a dedicated installation. Neither choice removes the need to plan for network or equipment failure.

Configure protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the capabilities of your source. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and automatically transcodes received streams into viewer output formats. Choose a quality your actual upload connection can sustain rather than selecting resolution on appearance alone. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance
Leave upload capacity for variation and any backup stream. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; its guidance says primary, backup, and headroom bandwidth together should fit the available upload capacity. A connection that barely meets the primary stream’s bitrate can still fail when network conditions fluctuate.

Test, publish, and monitor
- Run a realistic test: Use movement and audio similar to the actual product presentation, not just a static test screen. Check that the loop changes clips in the intended order and that narration and music are audible.
- Watch stream health: Review Live Control Room’s preview, health messages, and warnings before publishing. Resolve connection or encoding problems before making the event public.
- Check the viewer experience: Open the watch page and channel page, then confirm playback on a mobile device. Check the title, description, visibility, and any shopping tags from a viewer’s perspective.
- Plan for supervision and recovery: Decide who or what will notice a frozen picture, silent audio, encoder shutdown, or dropped connection, and who can restart or repair the stream. Keep the key secure and document the recovery steps for anyone responsible for the channel.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and checking its messages. Its live-streaming tips explain the bandwidth and testing considerations. A successful preview is not a promise of uninterrupted uptime.
Tag products and understand the eligibility limits
YouTube Shopping can let eligible creators tag products in a live stream. Creators may tag their own products after connecting a store, or products from other brands if they qualify for the relevant YouTube Shopping features. Tags can be added before, during, or after a stream; post-stream tags may appear on the replay. Creators can pin featured products. Changes made while live may not appear immediately for viewers already watching, so finalize the product order and remove outdated items before broadcast where possible. For products from other brands, tag items that are prominently featured, used safely, and meaningfully related to the stream. Availability depends on creator eligibility, supported locations and retailers, viewer location, and shipping availability. YouTube’s rules also require appropriate content rights, including music rights, and exclude some content, such as made-for-kids videos and content considered ineligible for monetization. Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is unavailable: Verify the channel, check for a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm you selected the intended stream and copied its current server URL and key into the matching encoder fields. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and replace it in the encoder.
- Playback buffers or stream health is poor: Check the encoder’s bitrate against real upload capacity, reduce output demands if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Review Live Control Room messages and test under realistic network conditions.
- Video or audio is wrong: Inspect the source playlist, encoder inputs, and audio levels using representative motion and sound before publishing. Confirm the preview rather than assuming the source file is playing correctly.
- The broadcast stops or needs to exceed a planned session: Use auto-start and auto-stop only as controls, not as an uptime guarantee. Build a restart and monitoring plan, and verify current YouTube behavior for sessions longer than 12 hours.
- Product tags are missing or stale: Check creator, product, retailer, and location eligibility; confirm the item is relevant and featured. Make changes before the broadcast when practical because live changes may not immediately appear to viewers already watching.
