You can run an always-on YouTube gaming channel with FFmpeg by sending a live video feed to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest server using the server URL and stream key shown in your channel’s Live Control Room. The command is only one part of the setup: your game or other video source, FFmpeg process, host and internet connection must all remain available, and you need to monitor YouTube’s stream health.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours; once enabled, a stream can go live instantly. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- A video source that FFmpeg can access, such as gameplay on the streaming computer or console output routed through a capture device.
- A computer or other host that can run FFmpeg, encode the chosen video settings and sustain the upload.
- The RTMPS server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to start. Get both from YouTube’s Live Control Room; treat the key as a password.
A capture card, webcam, microphone and headphones are optional workflow choices, not requirements for YouTube ingestion. A console connected to a separate streaming computer may need an HDMI capture card; gameplay already available on the streaming computer may not.
Choose how gameplay gets into FFmpeg
First identify the actual input FFmpeg will read. FFmpeg can only publish what its input provides: it does not by itself create a game capture source or keep a game running. For PC gameplay, use a capture path supported by your operating system and FFmpeg build. For console gameplay sent to another computer, a capture device can bridge the console’s HDMI output into that computer. Check that your capture device, drivers and chosen resolution and frame rate work together before building the streaming command.
YouTube also supports other encoder workflows, including graphical encoder software such as OBS Studio and standalone hardware encoders. Those are alternatives if you prefer scenes and overlays or a dedicated appliance; they are not prerequisites for using FFmpeg.

Enable live streaming and create a stream in YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- If live streaming is not enabled on the channel, complete YouTube’s activation steps and allow for the possibility that first-time activation takes up to 24 hours.
- Create or select the stream you plan to use. In its Stream settings, reveal and copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key.
- Use the exact RTMPS URL displayed for that stream. Do not substitute an endpoint from an old setup or publish the key in a public script, screenshot or article.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Its stream setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing syntax and RTMPS support in its RTMP protocol documentation.
Set encoder values for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually intend to send. The live encoder guide lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Consult the guide for the remaining audio, color-space, bit-depth and picture-format requirements, especially for HDR or a codec other than H.264: YouTube live encoder settings.

These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion figures for the listed H.264 modes, not a promise that your connection or machine can sustain them. There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. Match the selected codec and mode to YouTube’s current table and choose a rate the host can encode and the upload connection can maintain. Test with representative gameplay and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.

Build the FFmpeg publishing command
The following is a schematic command shape, not a tested, universal gaming-capture recipe. Replace the input, endpoint, key and video values with settings appropriate to your capture path and YouTube stream. The example assumes H.264 video and AAC audio:

VIDEO_BITRATE and VIDEO_BUFFER need actual values, and GOP_FRAMES should correspond to the selected frame rate and YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval. The precise command may also need input-specific flags, pixel-format settings and a different encoder implementation. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the encoder and input support you need.
Use the exact RTMPS URL and key from the Live Control Room in the final publishing destination. Keep the real key out of public scripts and repositories; avoid leaving it in shell history or logs that other people can read. If you schedule streams or rotate credentials, update the local configuration from the current Live Control Room values.

Make it genuinely always-on
A working FFmpeg command establishes a connection; it does not ensure a 24/7 channel. For continuous operation, all of these parts need attention:
- Source: the game, capture device or other chosen source must keep providing usable video and audio. A sleeping game, disconnected capture card or missing audio input can leave the encoder with nothing useful to send.
- Encoder process: FFmpeg must remain running and healthy. A supervisor or restart policy can relaunch a process that exits, but cannot repair a missing source, bad credentials or invalid encoding settings.
- Host and network: the streaming machine must stay powered and usable, and its upload must sustain the selected stream. A host shutdown or network outage interrupts publishing.
- Monitoring: check YouTube’s stream health and respond to problems rather than assuming that a running process means a healthy broadcast.
- Broadcast lifecycle: decide how the stream is created, started, monitored and stopped. For a basic setup, use the Live Control Room with a single stream and broadcast. More advanced API-managed setups can separate the live stream feed from broadcast events.
YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveStream resource (the feed) from a liveBroadcast resource (the event). Its continuous-broadcast example describes keeping a continuous broadcast live while starting a separate simultaneous event from the same stream, then completing the separate event without stopping the continuing feed. YouTube exposes stream-health configuration issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio and video starvation. A restart may help after a transient process failure, but it will not resolve a persistent configuration problem. The cited YouTube guidance describes ingest and stream behavior; it does not establish that a particular FFmpeg command, computer, capture method or network will run without interruption.

Plan for archives and copyright
YouTube’s encoder setup guide says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is a statement about streams under 12 hours; do not assume YouTube will automatically retain an entire longer-running feed. If the footage matters, arrange a separate recording or archive plan and check YouTube’s current behavior.
Before broadcasting gameplay, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the game footage and any music, voice chat or other audio in the feed. YouTube’s automated copyright systems and rights-holder actions can affect a live stream or its archive. Review the applicable YouTube live-stream guidance and YouTube copyright basics; do not assume that gameplay or background music is automatically cleared for continuous broadcasting.

Do I need OBS to stream a game with FFmpeg?
No. FFmpeg is an encoder option; OBS is an alternative if you want a graphical workflow for scenes and overlays.

No. It can publish an input, but continuous operation also depends on a persistent source, process, host, network and monitoring.
