1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo stream video through Amazon CloudFront, store the video or packaged streaming output in an origin such as Amazon S3, configure a CloudFront distribution to deliver it over HTTPS, and test playback using the URL for the actual video or streaming manifest. For adaptive streaming, CloudFront is the delivery layer—not the encoder: Amazon Web Services says an encoder must package video into segments and manifests before CloudFront can distribute it.
Choose a video workflow and format
Start by deciding whether you are delivering video on demand (VOD) or a live broadcast. AWS describes VOD as content stored on a server that viewers can watch at any time. CloudFront can deliver both VOD and live video from HTTP origins, but the encoding and origin setup differ.
- Simple VOD file: An uploaded video file can be served from S3 through CloudFront, as in the AWS setup tutorial. This is file delivery; it does not provide adaptive bitrate playback by itself.
- Adaptive VOD: An encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaConvert can create a manifest and media segments. Multiple resolutions and bitrates let a compatible player adjust quality to available bandwidth.
- Live: A live encoder and usually a packaging or origin service produce the stream CloudFront delivers. AWS gives MediaLive with MediaStore or MediaPackage as example components.
AWS lists MPEG-DASH, HLS, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF among common packaging formats. Choose according to the target players and your encoding and delivery workflow; the cited AWS guidance does not identify one format as best for every audience.
Set up VOD delivery from S3
1. Create a bucket and upload the source
Create an S3 bucket in the Region appropriate for your project, then upload the source video. AWS advises considering proximity, cost, and regulatory requirements when choosing the Region. The source file can be delivered as a file, or used as input to an encoding workflow.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Encode and package if you need adaptive playback
For adaptive bitrate streaming, use an encoder such as MediaConvert to produce the streaming outputs: a manifest and the media segments it references. If the player should adapt quality, create multiple resolution and bitrate versions. Store the resulting files in S3 with paths that your player and CloudFront behaviors can address.
CloudFront does not turn a source video into these renditions. If you only need to serve a single video file, follow the file-delivery path instead; do not treat that as an adaptive stream.

3. Create a CloudFront distribution and connect the S3 origin
Create a CloudFront distribution using the current AWS instructions for an S3 origin. Configure the origin so viewers retrieve content through CloudFront rather than accessing the bucket directly. AWS’s tutorial demonstrates an origin access identity (OAI), but OAI is not appropriate for every bucket: for an S3 origin encrypted with SSE-KMS, the tutorial says to use origin access control (OAC), because OAI does not support SSE-KMS.
4. Set the cache behavior and HTTPS delivery
Configure a cache behavior for the object paths you intend to serve and use HTTPS for viewer delivery. A basic file workflow may need a behavior covering the video object’s path. A packaged stream’s player requests a manifest and then the segments referenced by it; ensure the behavior covers those paths. Do not copy MediaPackage-specific path or query-string patterns into a simple S3 distribution without checking how your own files are laid out.

5. Test through the CloudFront URL
Use the distribution domain and the object path to form a playback URL, following the basic shape https://<distribution-domain>/<path-to-video>. For a packaged stream, give the player the manifest URL; the player should then request its referenced segments. Check the response and playback in the actual player and client you intend to support.
6. Optionally add a custom domain
A custom domain can be configured after the distribution is working. The AWS tutorial uses Route 53 for DNS and custom-domain setup. Domain registration, hosted zones, and DNS queries can incur fees; the total depends on the domain and usage, so the setup steps alone do not establish a cost estimate.

Use a separate architecture for live video
A live stream needs a live encoding path before CloudFront can deliver it. AWS describes MediaLive as an encoder that compresses and formats live outputs. From there, MediaStore can act as an origin, or MediaPackage can convert the output into delivery formats; configure CloudFront with the chosen origin.
If you use MediaPackage, match cache behaviors to the manifest and segment extensions in your endpoint. AWS’s MediaPackage examples commonly separate manifest and segment behaviors, redirect viewer HTTP requests to HTTPS, and forward only query strings required by the endpoint features. For LL-HLS manifest requests, AWS names _HLS_msn and _HLS_part. AWS also recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and CloudFront. These are MediaPackage-specific details, not universal settings for every origin.

Keep origin protection separate from viewer access
Restrict direct access to S3
Origin protection ensures that viewers cannot bypass CloudFront and fetch the S3 content directly. Use the applicable CloudFront origin access mechanism to restrict the bucket; use OAC when the S3 origin uses SSE-KMS, since the AWS tutorial notes OAI does not support that encryption setup.
Require authorization from viewers when content is private
For private content, configure signed URLs or signed cookies on the relevant cache behavior, separately from restricting the S3 origin. With signed URLs, a trusted key group allows CloudFront to verify the signature. Your application—not CloudFront—must decide whether a viewer is entitled to access the content and issue a signed URL or cookie accordingly.
A canned signed-URL policy supports expiration. A custom policy can additionally specify a not-before time or an IP range. If a request includes query parameters, include them in the signed URL as required; AWS warns that a request with unsigned query parameters can return HTTP 403. Be careful when enabling trusted signers on a behavior: viewers matching that path must then use signed URLs, so turn it on only when your application is ready to provide them.
Understand costs before launch
A defensible CloudFront video cost estimate needs assumptions about Region, storage, transcoding volume, requests, and viewer data transfer. AWS’s setup tutorial also notes fees associated with Route 53 domain registration, hosted zones, and DNS queries. The setup guidance does not provide a numeric total that applies to every deployment.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The source plays as a file, but there is no adaptive quality switching: A single video file is not an adaptive bitrate package. Encode multiple renditions and package them into a manifest and segments, then play the manifest with a compatible player.
- The player cannot load a manifest or media segment: Check that the manifest and referenced segment paths exist in S3 and are covered by the CloudFront behavior. For MediaPackage, verify the behavior patterns and only the endpoint query strings required by the workflow.
- Requests return HTTP 403: Check both sides of access control. Confirm CloudFront is allowed to read the S3 origin, and, for private behaviors, verify the viewer has a valid signed URL or cookie. If query parameters are included in a signed-URL request, ensure they are signed as required.
- An SSE-KMS-protected S3 origin is inaccessible: Check the origin access configuration. AWS’s tutorial specifies OAC for this case because OAI does not support SSE-KMS.
- Enabling private access breaks existing viewers: Trusted signers require signed URLs for viewers matching that behavior. Prepare the application to issue them before enabling the requirement.
- Playback works through the distribution domain but not the custom domain: Check the custom-domain and Route 53 DNS setup separately from the origin and playback path; the AWS tutorial treats custom-domain configuration as an optional step after basic delivery.
Or let it run in the cloud
CloudFront is for delivering video files and packaged streams from an origin; it is not a service for keeping a pre-recorded YouTube channel live around the clock. For that specific use, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists as a 24/7 YouTube stream: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
