To add alert boxes to a YouTube live stream, choose an alert provider, configure the events you want, add its alert widget to your streaming software, and test it in the scene before going live. In Streamlabs Desktop, add an Alert Box source; in OBS Studio, you can add a provider’s widget URL as a Browser Source.
What an alert box does—and what it does not
An alert box is an on-screen overlay from a third-party provider. It appears in your stream’s video when the provider receives a supported event, such as a new subscriber, member, or contribution. You configure the widget with the provider, then show it in a scene in your streaming software.
That overlay is separate from YouTube’s own notifications to viewers. For encoder-based streams, YouTube says it sends notifications to eligible subscribers after the stream is public and YouTube detects that it is live. Whether a viewer receives a notification also depends on their YouTube account and device notification settings. See YouTube’s live-stream notification guidance.

Choose a provider and connect your YouTube channel
In the alert provider’s dashboard, use its platform or account-linking controls to connect the YouTube channel. Streamlabs’ alert setup guide, last updated July 6, 2026, describes linking channels and opening alert settings. Labels and available controls can change, so use the provider’s current instructions for your account.

Choose events and customize their appearance
Select the YouTube event types you want to display. Depending on the provider’s options, adjust the image or animation, sound, message text, duration, and alert variations. Review the YouTube-specific settings rather than assuming every event type or option works identically across platforms, then save your changes.

- Streamlabs Desktop: Add an Alert Box from Sources. Streamlabs’ setup instructions cover its native source.
- OBS Studio: In the provider dashboard, copy the widget URL and add it in OBS as a Browser Source. OBS documents this approach for third-party overlays in its FAQ. A Streamlabs plugin is another available integration route, but it is not required for a Browser Source.
- Other streaming software: Look for a browser or web source that accepts the provider’s widget URL. The exact interface and labels depend on the program.
Position and size the source so it does not cover faces, documentary footage, captions, or other information viewers need to see.

Test it in the scene you will use
Use the provider’s test function and check the result in your streaming software. Confirm that the alert is visible in the intended scene and that its sound plays at a suitable level. A test shows how the configured widget renders; it does not prove that YouTube will expose or promptly deliver every real subscriber event.

The documented routes explain how to add a widget, but do not establish a neutral comparison of provider reliability, cost, or feature quality. Choose based on your software and how you want to manage and test the alert.
Why an alert may not appear
- The widget is missing from the video: Check that the correct widget URL or source was used, that the source is visible, and that it is included in the active scene. Confirm that your provider settings were saved, then trigger a test event.
- A test works but a subscriber alert does not: YouTube subscriptions are private by default. Accounts with private subscriptions do not appear in a channel’s Subscribers List; public subscriptions can be visible. That visibility affects whether an account is shown, and an overlay test does not establish that a real YouTube event will be exposed to the widget. See YouTube’s subscription privacy information.
- A real subscriber alert is delayed: Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance describes delays of up to four hours. That is a Streamlabs-specific statement on an older troubleshooting page, not a guaranteed delay for every provider or account. Check the provider’s current guidance if events remain missing.
- The alert is obscured or hard to hear: Reposition or resize the source and adjust its sound in the provider settings, then test again in the target scene.
