To set up live adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming in Wowza Streaming Engine (WSE), enable the licensed Transcoder on a live application, create multiple output renditions with aligned keyframes, group them for playback, and test the resulting HLS or MPEG-DASH stream in a compatible player. The right template, codecs, bitrate ladder, and grouping method depend on your incoming stream, target players, and whether you are streaming live, serving VOD, or using origin and edge servers.
Before you configure ABR
This workflow covers live ABR from a single WSE instance. It assumes an encoder is already sending a source stream to a live application. Confirm your WSE version and licensing first: Wowza says the Transcoder must be properly licensed before you enable it. The cited setup documentation does not establish a current Transcoder price or plan entitlement, so check your own license and deployment terms.
- Identify the source video and audio codecs, resolution, and frame rate.
- List the playback protocols and devices your audience needs to use.
- Choose output profiles that your source, server capacity, and delivery setup can sustain.
- Decide whether playback is from one Engine instance or an origin/edge deployment; this affects how you group renditions.
Wowza’s setup procedure is documented at Set up and run Transcoder in Wowza Streaming Engine, updated September 30, 2026.
Configure live ABR in Wowza Streaming Engine
-
Open the live application and enable Transcoder
In WSE Manager, open the live application that receives the encoder input and go to its Transcoder settings. Enable Transcoder. Select a fallback template, or configure template matching by incoming stream name if different sources need different templates. Wowza says changes to the match-by-name setting require saving and restarting the application.

-
Choose a template that matches the source
Use a Transcode template when the input needs codec conversion. The Transrate path is for supported H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio when you need multiple bitrate outputs without changing to a different video codec. Wowza also documents audio-only and H.265 templates; choose based on actual source and player compatibility rather than the template label alone. See About Wowza Transcoder for the documented capabilities.
-
Set up output renditions
Each enabled encoding preset represents an output rendition. Adjust presets for the expected audience bandwidth and target quality, and verify that each output has a unique stream name. Configure the video codec and audio bitrate as appropriate for the selected template. Do not treat values shown in a sample preset as universal recommendations: the suitable ladder depends on the source, viewers’ networks, player support, and available encoding capacity.

-
Create a group for the live renditions
For supported live playback from a single Engine instance, configure the Transcoder template to create a Stream Name Group from its outputs. Wowza recommends Stream Name Groups in this arrangement because the Transcoder creates them automatically. A template may include the source as a pass-through member. If it does, make sure the StreamName created for an encoded output differs from the incoming stream name.
-
Align keyframes across renditions
Players need aligned keyframes to switch between renditions correctly. Where renditions are encoded separately, use the same keyframe interval and frame rate values across them. Multiple outputs alone do not make a stream switchable if their keyframes are out of alignment.

Enable the playback protocol and test
Confirm the application has the intended HTTP playback type enabled. Replace the sample address, application, and group values below with the values for your deployment:
- HLS:
http://[address]:1935/myApplication/ngrp:myStream_all/playlist.m3u8 - MPEG-DASH:
http://[address]:1935/myApplication/ngrp:myStream_all/manifest.mpd
The
ngrp:prefix identifies grouped live renditions. Do not copymyApplicationormyStream_allliterally unless those are your actual names. Wowza also documents using the Video Test Players workflow in WSE Manager to generate a playback URL and test it.Rank #4

For the grouping and playback details, see Wowza’s Stream adaptive bitrate content documentation, updated July 6, 2026.
Choose the right grouping method for the delivery type
| Use case | Grouping method | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live, single WSE instance | Stream Name Group created by the Transcoder template | Use the group’s actual name in the HTTP playback URL. |
| VOD ABR | SMIL file associating the multiple bitrate files | The playback stream name in the URL includes the .smil extension. Wowza requires SMIL for VOD ABR. |
| Live origin/edge repeater deployment | SMIL may be needed for ABR delivery from the edge | Wowza notes that an origin-created Stream Name Group cannot be propagated to edge servers in some configurations; check the topology-specific guidance. |
Wowza’s cited ABR guidance describes HTTP-based playback. Its recommendation for Stream Name Groups applies to supported single-instance or origin-server live arrangements; it is not a blanket rule for VOD or every edge configuration.

Select codecs and rendition profiles for your audience
Wowza lists H.263, H.264, H.265, VP8, and VP9 video output, and AAC, MP3, Vorbis, and Opus audio output for Transcoder workflows. The Transrate path is narrower: H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio. Output availability does not guarantee that every target player supports every codec and protocol combination.
- Favor H.264 when broad compatibility is the priority. Validate alternatives against the actual devices and players your viewers use.
- Treat H.265/HEVC as a specialized configuration. Wowza says H.265 is not widely supported across playback protocols and players. Its HEVC-over-HLS with CMAF procedure requires Transcoder and manual XML configuration; the documented setup is not fully available in Manager. See Deliver HLS live streams using CMAF and HEVC/H.265 with Wowza Streaming Engine, updated August 3, 2026.
- Build a bandwidth ladder around real constraints. Cover the network conditions and viewing quality you expect without exceeding what the source and server can encode and deliver.
- Consider compute and latency. Software or hardware encoding is an implementation choice; hardware acceleration is not a universal prerequisite. Confirm that the selected approach can handle your outputs and latency needs.
The cited Wowza material does not establish one universally correct bitrate ladder for all resolutions, frame rates, audiences, and players. Treat any example profile set as a starting point for validation, not a general benchmark.
Troubleshoot common ABR setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Only one rendition plays, or the player does not offer switching | The outputs are not grouped for ABR playback, or the playback URL points to a single stream rather than the group. | Confirm the template created a Stream Name Group and use the group’s name with the ngrp: URL pattern. |
| Switching between qualities fails or playback is unstable | Keyframes are not aligned across renditions. | Compare keyframe interval and frame rate values across separately encoded outputs and align them. |
| A VOD ABR URL does not resolve as expected | A live Stream Name Group was used instead of a SMIL file. | Associate the VOD renditions in a SMIL file and include .smil in the playback stream name. |
| Edge playback cannot find the origin’s group | The deployment may be one of the origin/edge configurations where Stream Name Groups do not propagate to edges. | Check the topology and use the SMIL-based edge workflow where Wowza requires it. |
| The sample URL returns an error | The example application or group name was copied unchanged, or the intended HTTP playback type is not enabled. | Substitute the deployment’s address, application, and group names; verify the application’s playback configuration. |
| Transcoder cannot be enabled | The installation may not have the required Transcoder license. | Verify licensing and entitlement for the WSE installation before continuing. |
| HEVC output does not play on a target device | The player or protocol may not support the selected HEVC combination. | Validate codec support for the actual playback targets; use H.264 when broad compatibility is needed. |

- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
