To stream from a Raspberry Pi to YouTube with FFmpeg, copy the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then have FFmpeg send a YouTube-compatible video and audio stream to that exact endpoint. Use RTMPS if your FFmpeg build supports it, protect the key like a password, and test the stream before relying on it for an event. The right capture and encoding command depends on your Pi model and video source, so the example below is a template—not a guaranteed command for every setup.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with access to the Live Control Room. The steps below do not establish account eligibility; check your channel’s Live Control Room if live streaming is unavailable.
  • A Raspberry Pi with FFmpeg installed. The commands and protocols available depend on how FFmpeg was packaged and built on your Pi.
  • A video source FFmpeg can read, such as an existing video file or a camera/capture device, and an audio source if your stream needs sound.
  • A reliable upload connection with capacity beyond the stream’s total bitrate.

First decide whether the source is already encoded in a format and bitrate YouTube accepts. If it is, FFmpeg may be able to copy the video stream without encoding it again. If it is not, you will need to encode it, which uses more of the Pi’s processing capacity.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live to enter the Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select one, then copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s setup guidance explains where to find and enter these values: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Keep the two values separate in your notes. The URL identifies YouTube’s ingest endpoint; the key identifies and authenticates your stream. Use the exact URL YouTube supplies rather than guessing a host or key format.

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat yours as a secret: do not include it in screenshots, public posts, shell history you share, or scripts committed to a repository. See Manage live stream settings for YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Choose RTMPS or RTMP

YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection. Copy the RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room instead of assuming the displayed RTMP endpoint is also the secure endpoint. Your FFmpeg build must support the TLS protocol required by that endpoint. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance includes port 443 as a possible remedy for certain SSL errors; use the supplied endpoint and follow that guidance where it applies.

FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes RTMP target URLs and playpath options. For YouTube, use the URL and key shown in your account; do not substitute an endpoint copied from an unrelated example.

Build an FFmpeg command for your source

For an already encoded video

If the input video is already H.264 and its pixel format, timestamps, and bitrate are suitable, stream-copying can avoid a second video encode. Audio may still need to be encoded separately. This pattern illustrates the structure, but the input filename, audio mapping, and exact URL/key formatting depend on the source and the values YouTube provides:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv '<YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>'

Replace the placeholders with the exact ingest URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. The key is part of the destination and must remain private. This is an example command, not an end-to-end tested command for every FFmpeg build or source. In particular, do not include audio options if the input has no audio or the stream does not need it; inspect the input and map the streams you actually intend to send.

For a camera or capture device

There is no single camera command that fits every Pi: FFmpeg needs to know how the particular camera or capture device exposes video and audio. Identify the device and its input format first, then either copy a compatible encoded feed or encode it to a YouTube-accepted output. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes rpicam-vid capture and its FFmpeg/libav options, including hardware H.264 encoding where available: Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Hardware capability varies by generation. Raspberry Pi documents that Pi 5 uses software video encoders; its --low-latency option trades coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate for reduced latency. Do not assume hardware encoder flags or a particular frame rate will work on every Pi model. If encoding on the Pi, start conservatively, monitor CPU load and stream health, and adjust only after a representative test.

For a source that needs re-encoding

Re-encoding gives you control over output settings but consumes Pi compute. A generic pattern is shown below; choose an input appropriate to your device and verify that your FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and options before using it:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv '<YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>'

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This example’s bitrate and keyframe interval are illustrative, not a universal recommendation: the correct values depend on output resolution and frame rate, YouTube’s current guidance, the Pi’s ability to encode, and available upload bandwidth. The example uses a 60-frame GOP as a two-second interval only if the output is 30 fps. For a different frame rate, set the GOP to roughly two seconds’ worth of frames. Remove or change audio settings if your input’s audio layout differs.

Match YouTube’s encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube Help’s page accessed in 2026 gives a recommended bitrate range of 3–8 Mbps. These recommendations can change, so check YouTube’s encoder settings again when configuring a stream.

YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default; manual resolution is configured through a custom stream key. YouTube transcodes streams into playback formats, but that does not remove the need to send an input it accepts. Confirm settings and review the Live Control Room’s stream health rather than assuming a particular bitrate guarantees good playback on every connection.

Start, check, and end the stream

  1. Run the FFmpeg command and inspect its output for connection, encoding, or muxing errors.
  2. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream state to appear. Check picture, sound, and stream health before starting an event.
  3. For a scheduled stream, use YouTube’s Go live control when the preview and state are correct. YouTube’s encoder setup walkthrough is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  4. To finish, stop the encoder and end the stream through YouTube’s workflow. Confirm the Live Control Room shows that the stream has ended.

Before a real broadcast, test with representative motion and audio—not just a static frame. Measure actual upload capacity and leave room beyond the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom over total stream bitrate in its live streaming tips.

Fix common problems

No preview or connection failure

  • Recheck the URL and key against the Live Control Room; a typo or stale key can prevent connection.
  • Read the FFmpeg log for DNS, TLS, authentication, or muxer errors, and verify that the output format and streams are valid.
  • If you reset the stream key, update the value in the encoder before reconnecting.

RTMPS certificate or timeout error

  • Confirm the copied URL begins with rtmps if you intended to use RTMPS.
  • Check whether your FFmpeg build supports the TLS protocol needed by that endpoint.
  • For SSL errors covered by YouTube’s guidance, try the supplied endpoint with port 443 as described in YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting page.

Dropped frames or unstable output

  • Compare the total stream bitrate with measured upload bandwidth, keeping YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection is constrained; if the Pi is encoding, reduce the encoding load or output frame rate if the hardware cannot sustain it.
  • Test again with movement and monitor the Live Control Room’s stream-health status.

Wrong picture or missing audio

  • Confirm that FFmpeg is reading and mapping the intended video and audio streams.
  • Check that the emitted codecs are supported by YouTube and that audio options suit the actual source. Do not add silent audio unless your setup requires it.

Exposed or compromised stream key

Reset the key in the Live Control Room and replace it in your encoder. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a stream key; see Manage live stream settings.

Keep a stream running without leaving the Pi on

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than broadcast a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative that runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. No home computer or connection has to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.

YouTube copyright and reused-content considerations

A stream key only connects an encoder to YouTube; it does not grant rights to the video or audio you broadcast. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content. Repeating a video as a live stream does not itself establish that the content is original or eligible for monetization. For a practical pre-stream checklist, see the copyright safety checklist.
