For personal listening, use YouTube Music’s station builder and seed it with artists you enjoy. For a public radio-style programme, set up a YouTube livestream, send it a video-and-audio feed, and clear the rights for every recording and composition before broadcasting.
Choose between a personal mix and a public station

These are different features: a personal station is a listening mix, not a public broadcast. A livestream is a creator’s programme, not a way to create a private YouTube Music station.
Set up a personal Indian classical mix in YouTube Music
- Open the YouTube Music homepage. Find the “Your music tuner” section. YouTube’s guide describes the custom station builder there; the exact layout may vary by app or interface.
- Choose up to 30 artists. Pick performers whose music you want the mix to draw from. You might begin with artists you already listen to, then adjust your selection after hearing what the station returns.
- Set the mix preferences. Choose the amount of variety and whether you prefer familiar music or new discoveries. Apply any filters available in your version of the app, then select Done.
- Listen and refine. Recommendations may draw on your linked YouTube account and can become more tailored as you listen. If results drift from Indian classical music, narrow the artist selection or start over with a more focused group.
YouTube does not promise that every Indian classical performer, instrument, tradition, or gharana will be available in the tuner. If the custom tuner does not give you the starting point you want, try beginning from a relevant track, album, or artist. A March 2023 Gadgets Now walkthrough described a “Start radio” option in an item menu, but app labels and placement can change; use the current controls shown in your app. That walkthrough also described labels such as “Familiar,” “Blend,” “Discover,” “Deep cuts,” “New releases,” “Chill,” and “Focus.” Treat them as version-sensitive rather than guaranteed current options.
Set up a public radio-style YouTube livestream
This route is for publishing a programme on a channel. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods. An encoder is useful when you need external audio or video sources or overlays; use a simpler method if it meets the production’s needs. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to start.

- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestream restriction within the preceding 90 days. Enable livestreaming if it is not already enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before a planned broadcast.
- Clear the music rights before preparing the programme. Confirm that the permissions cover the particular recordings and compositions, public livestreaming, intended territories and duration, and any planned archive or monetization. See the rights section below.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and use the Live Control Room to create or schedule the broadcast.
- Connect the production method. If using an encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder. The stream key is a credential that lets the encoder send the feed: keep it private and do not share it with people who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.
- Start the feed and check the preview. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the programme is accessible and that its audio and video are working before going live. Test the complete programme and monitor it during the broadcast.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the encoder and end the stream when the programme is finished. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a promise of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Choose a production method that fits the programme
- Mobile or webcam: Consider these for a straightforward programme that can be produced with the available camera and audio setup.
- Encoder: Choose this when the programme needs an external audio/video source, overlays, or a more involved production workflow.
- Prerecorded playlist: A playlist still needs a feed sent to YouTube. An encoder or a cloud service can send that audio-and-video programme; it does not remove the need to confirm music rights or monitor the YouTube broadcast.
Clear rights for Indian classical recordings before broadcasting
Indian classical music is not automatically free to livestream because a performance is traditional, a recording is old, or a track description says “free.” YouTube defines safe music as music in the public domain or music for which you have permission from the copyright owner. A “free” label or attribution alone does not establish that permission, and buying rights elsewhere does not automatically notify Content ID.
A livestream may involve rights in both the musical composition and the specific sound recording or performance. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, public-performance licences, and other royalty participants, as well as compliance with relevant laws and requirements in the stream territory. A licence for personal listening or for using music in one ordinary video should not be assumed to cover continuous public livestreaming.

Check each recording and use separately
- Identify the recording and the composition it contains; a traditional composition and a particular modern performance may have different rights considerations.
- Confirm who controls the relevant rights and obtain permission that explicitly covers livestreaming on YouTube and the territories where the stream will be available.
- Check whether permission covers the intended duration, monetization, and any recording or archive of the broadcast.
- Keep written records of licences and permissions, including any limits or attribution requirements.
- If the rights position is unclear, seek qualified rights advice before broadcasting. The applicable permissions can depend on the specific recording, composition, performance, and intended territory.
YouTube identifies its Audio Library, original music, Creator Music in certain regions, and third-party music with a checked licence as possible sources. Creator Music should not be assumed to be available to an India-based channel: YouTube’s surfaced Help page states it is available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending, and that terms are track-specific. Check current access and the licence for an individual track before relying on it.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Livestreaming is not available in Studio: Check that the channel is verified and has no livestream restriction within the preceding 90 days. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours.
- The encoder is not sending a preview: Check that the stream URL and stream key were entered correctly, that the encoder is running, and that the Live Control Room is open for the intended stream. Do not reveal the stream key while troubleshooting.
- The preview appears but the programme is not ready to publish: Review the audio and video in the preview, confirm the intended programme is being sent, and test the full programme before going live.
- The personal station returns music outside your intended style: Narrow the artist seeds or begin from a specific relevant track, album, or artist. The catalog and available controls are not guaranteed to cover every performer or tradition.
- A track receives a Content ID claim or is blocked: A “free” description, attribution, or a separate purchase does not by itself prove that the livestream use is cleared. Review the exact licence and contact the relevant rights holder where necessary.
Costs and practical choices
A personal YouTube Music station has no broadcast hardware requirement. For a public programme, the production method depends on whether you need a camera, external audio/video, overlays, or continuous playback. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin, but a more complex production may call for an encoder. For prerecorded continuous playback, compare the cost and effort of keeping your own computer and connection running with a cloud service. Whatever method you choose, music permissions remain a separate requirement.
