You can livestream prerecorded video to YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, but cloud storage alone cannot do it. A cloud service or cloud-hosted encoder must read the file, turn it into a live feed, and send it to YouTube. For the simplest route, use a managed service that explicitly supports prerecorded YouTube streams; for more control, run an encoder in cloud infrastructure.
What a cloud-storage livestream relay needs
A video file in S3, Drive, or another storage location is not a livestream. Storage holds and serves a finished video; a relay needs a process that reads the media, schedules or loops playback, packages it as a live output, and transmits that output to YouTube. AWS describes stored video-on-demand assets separately from live encoding, where an encoder is needed to package video for distribution: AWS CloudFront documentation.
You have three practical architectures:
- Managed cloud prerecorded-streaming service: the service handles file access, playback, and delivery from its infrastructure. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre for 24/7 livestreaming of prerecorded videos. Gyre says its files sit in Gyre Storage and its servers send the stream, rather than the user’s computer or home connection. That operational description is the vendor’s, not an independent reliability test: YouTube’s encoder guide and Gyre’s description.
- Self-managed cloud encoder: you operate a cloud compute process that fetches the media, handles looping and scheduling, and sends the stream to YouTube. This gives you control but requires engineering and monitoring.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: YouTube identifies the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream feature as a way to schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a physical encoder, not a cloud-storage relay; see YouTube’s encoder guide.
For a documentary channel seeking a straightforward 24/7 prerecorded stream, a managed cloud service is usually the least operationally demanding option. StreamNeo is #1 to try: it keeps uploaded videos looping to YouTube from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
1. Enable live streaming
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you intend to start: YouTube’s encoder guide.

2. Create or schedule the event
Use the Live Control Room’s Stream or Manage tab to configure the broadcast. Scheduling creates a planned event and a shareable watch page. Choose the visibility setting deliberately; an event set to private or unlisted will not be discoverable like a public stream.
3. Connect the cloud encoder securely
If the service offers YouTube account authorization, use its documented connection flow. Otherwise, copy the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast in Live Control Room into the encoder’s destination settings. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Use the endpoint YouTube supplies for that broadcast rather than copying a sample endpoint or a key from another guide.

When the encoder supports RTMPS, Google describes it as RTMP over SSL and specifies port 443; use the valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and path assigned for your stream. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
4. Start, verify, and end the stream
- Start playback or the encoder process in your cloud service.
- For a scheduled encoder stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- Check stream health in Live Control Room before promoting the watch page or leaving the broadcast unattended.
- When finished, stop sending content from the encoder and end the broadcast in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that longer streams will be archived automatically.
Choose the right approach for your files and workflow
| Approach | What it does | Best fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Loops uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube from the cloud. | Creators who want an always-on YouTube stream without maintaining a home computer or cloud encoder. | Confirm that your media fits the available storage and that your desired schedule and playlist are configured. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. |
| Other managed cloud service | Hosts or accesses files, schedules playback, and sends the live feed from provider infrastructure. YouTube lists Gyre for prerecorded 24/7 streaming; Gyre describes its own storage and server-origin stream. | Those seeking a managed route without cloud engineering. | Verify current file limits, formats, storage location and retention, scheduling and restart controls, stream monitoring, authorization, duration limits, price, and availability. Do not assume a particular drive or bucket is supported. |
| Self-managed cloud encoder | A cloud process fetches stored media, encodes or packages it, loops or schedules it, and publishes to YouTube. | Operators who already manage cloud infrastructure and need control over automation. | You must build and operate playback, credential handling, encoding, scheduling, failure recovery, monitoring, and cloud-cost controls. Storage or CDN delivery alone is not enough. |
| AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream | A physical encoder that YouTube says can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. | A recurring or one-off workflow where dedicated hardware is preferred. | It requires hardware and local network/device setup. It is not a cloud-storage relay and may not suit a fully remote workflow. |
Before choosing any provider, check whether it can import your actual storage location, which file containers and codecs it accepts, whether playlists and schedules work as needed, how it recovers from interruptions, what stream-health information it exposes, how it handles credentials, and what recurring costs apply. The current terms and supported integrations of third-party services should be confirmed with those providers.

Documentary rights, copyright, and reused content
Having a video file does not by itself establish the right to livestream it. Confirm that you own or have permission to use every element in the program, including footage, music, still images, narration, and archival clips. A 24/7 loop does not change those rights. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether an encoder successfully sends a stream; do not treat technical availability as approval to use material or as a guarantee of monetization.
Cost and operating considerations
A self-managed cloud relay can involve compute, storage, data transfer, and engineering time; the actual total depends on the infrastructure and workload. A managed service trades some control for less setup and ongoing server administration. Hardware avoids a cloud encoder subscription but requires buying, configuring, and connecting a device. Compare the full recurring cost and the labor required to recover a failed stream, not just the storage bill or encoder price.

- Live streaming is not available yet: first-time activation may still be processing. YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours; enable live streaming ahead of the planned event.
- The encoder cannot connect: check that the broadcast’s current server URL and stream key are copied correctly, the key has not been replaced, and the selected endpoint is the one shown in Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, use the secure endpoint and port specified by Google.
- No preview appears: confirm the cloud playback or encoder process is running and sending to the correct broadcast. Check the encoder’s own connection status and YouTube stream health before selecting Go live.
- The file will not play or import: verify its format against the provider’s current requirements. Supported containers, codecs, and storage integrations vary; do not assume that a file accessible through a browser or storage bucket is automatically ingestible by a relay service.
- The stream stops after you close a laptop: the playback or encoder may still be running on that computer. A genuinely cloud-origin stream must run on provider or cloud infrastructure, not depend on an active home computer.
- The archive is missing: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer broadcasts, plan how you will retain or publish the source video separately.
- YouTube drops the stream: inspect Live Control Room health and the encoder’s logs, then restart or use the service’s recovery controls. Recovery behavior varies by service; verify it rather than assuming it is automatic.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud loops the uploaded video, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
