You can send an encoder’s output from a Windows VPS to YouTube Live by enabling live streaming on your channel, creating a stream in YouTube Studio, and entering its current RTMPS server URL and stream key in the encoder. The harder part is keeping the encoder running unattended: a remote desktop connection is for administration, not an uptime guarantee. Confirm your provider’s session, reboot, transfer, and maintenance policies, then test recovery before relying on the setup.
What a Windows VPS does—and what it does not guarantee
A Windows VPS gives you a remotely administered Windows host on which you can install an encoder and connect it to YouTube Live. In this arrangement, the VPS runs the encoder and sends the stream; YouTube receives it. This can suit someone who needs a general-purpose Windows environment or encoder controls that a managed relay does not provide.
Do not assume that opening Remote Desktop and then closing your laptop proves the stream will continue. Remote access and continuous operation are separate issues. The behavior of a running encoder after a remote session disconnects or signs out depends on the Windows image, encoder, configuration, and provider policy. The Microsoft remote-access guidance cited here describes Windows Pro editions; it is not a definitive deployment guide for every Windows Server VPS image. Ask your provider what edition and licensing it supplies and how its remote sessions behave.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
- Enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of the broadcast rather than at the last minute. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create a stream or the Manage tab to schedule one.
- Copy the stream details from Live Control Room. Use the server URL and stream key shown for the stream you intend to run. Prefer the RTMPS URL provided by YouTube rather than relying on a remembered or copied-from-elsewhere ingest address.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in the intended encoder, do not include it in screenshots or public text, and restrict access to the VPS account and encoder settings.
Choose a Windows VPS and confirm its operating conditions
There is no OBS-specific minimum VPS size established by the YouTube encoder settings or the Microsoft sizing guidance cited here. The appropriate resources depend on your actual workload, including source resolution, frame rate, codec, and how many streams you encode at once. Network capacity and sustained outbound-transfer limits matter as well.

Before paying for a host, ask the provider for the details that determine whether your setup can run unattended:
- Which Windows edition or image is supplied, and what Windows licensing is included?
- How is remote access enabled, and what happens to applications when Remote Desktop disconnects or signs out?
- What CPU allocation, memory, disk space, and location does the plan provide?
- Are sustained outbound traffic or transfer volumes limited, and what happens if you reach a limit?
- What maintenance and reboot policies apply? Is there a documented way to recover after a restart?
- What account-security controls are available, and who can access the host?
Microsoft’s published virtual-machine sizing recommendations are for Remote Desktop session hosts and are workload-dependent; they are not an encoder benchmark. Use them as no substitute for validating your own encoder workload and the VPS provider’s specific terms. Install an encoder and enter YouTube’s RTMPS details
An encoder sends the video and audio to YouTube. Install an encoder that fits your workflow, then open its streaming or output settings and enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. OBS Studio is one possible software choice; the YouTube connection steps below apply to an encoder that supports YouTube’s supplied connection details.
- Get the current RTMPS URL. In Live Control Room, open Stream settings. If needed, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL.
- Select RTMPS in the encoder. Paste the exact URL YouTube displays and enter the matching stream key. Do not substitute a familiar-looking address or a URL from an old setup.
- Save the settings securely. Keep the key out of screenshots, logs you share publicly, and any configuration file accessible to people who should not control the stream.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended picture and sound before depending on the stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, and its guidance says to check for a protocol or server mismatch and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS if you encounter connection trouble. Set video and audio settings, then verify the output
Match the encoder settings to the source and the VPS’s available processing and upload capacity. YouTube’s cited encoder guidance lists the following technical constraints; they do not indicate how many vCPUs, how much memory, or how much bandwidth a particular VPS needs.

Make the stream recoverable before leaving it unattended
The official remote-access and sizing guidance does not establish that a particular encoder survives an RDP disconnect, starts after a reboot, or reconnects automatically after a failure. Nor does it establish any provider’s promise of uninterrupted operation. Configure a recovery method for the exact Windows image and encoder you use, and rehearse it before depending on a continuous broadcast.
- Start the stream and verify the YouTube preview and stream health.
- Test what happens when the Remote Desktop session disconnects. Check whether the encoder and stream continue; do not infer the result from the session merely closing.
- Test the recovery path you plan to use after an encoder failure or host restart. Confirm that the encoder can be relaunched and that YouTube receives the stream again.
- Ask the provider how scheduled maintenance, host restarts, and session sign-out affect the VPS, and what recovery or support it offers.
Keep the stream key private during setup and recovery tests. If YouTube stops receiving the stream, check the encoder’s output status, the exact URL and key, the selected protocol, and YouTube’s stream-health feedback before assuming the VPS needs a larger plan.

Know YouTube’s archive limit for long broadcasts
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That guidance does not promise a single automatically archived video for a continuous stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If an archive is essential, plan around the documented duration rather than assuming an indefinitely running stream will be saved as one video.
