Start by arranging the room, not shopping for equipment: fit your camera, microphone, light, monitor, and cables around the desk while keeping a clear path through the room. A small desk can work if your existing gear fits and you can position it without crowding your walking space.
Plan the room before the desk
Choose where you will sit and face the camera, then check how much room the desk and chair leave for moving through the space. Preserve a clear walkway before deciding where stands, lights, or cables should go. A small-room setup guide describes a 120 cm desk as one example, not a universal minimum; measure your own desk and room instead of treating that number as a requirement. - Measure the desk’s usable depth as well as its width; monitors, mounts, and a keyboard can consume more space than expected.
- Check where power and device connections are located, and plan cable paths so they do not cross the walkway.
- Before buying a mount or light, verify that it fits your actual monitor or desk.
- First see whether a camera or light you already own can do the job; new equipment is optional if the current setup fits.
Fit the camera, microphone, and monitor
Position the webcam
Place the webcam so your face is framed clearly without taking over the desk or obscuring the material viewers need to see. If the camera is mounted on the monitor, confirm that the mount fits and does not interfere with the screen or other equipment.
Keep the microphone usable
Position the microphone close enough to capture your voice while leaving room for the keyboard, mouse, and other devices. If it needs a stand, account for that footprint before settling on the desk layout.

Keep the screen and work area accessible
Arrange the monitor, camera, and microphone together rather than placing each wherever it happens to fit. Leave enough usable desk space to operate your equipment comfortably, and avoid a camera position that hides important on-screen content.
Add and frame the webcam in OBS

- In OBS, add a Video Capture Source for your webcam.
- Resize and position the webcam image in the scene. Check that it does not cover important content.
- Use the OBS audio mixer to balance your microphone against desktop or game audio so your voice remains audible.

Light your face without filling the floor
A monitor-mounted light may suit a tight room better than a floor stand because it can avoid occupying floor space. Put the light in front of you to illuminate your face, and confirm that its mount fits your monitor or desk before buying. Check the layout before you go live
- Walk through the room and make sure the desk, chair, and equipment leave a clear route.
- Check that the camera framing is usable and does not hide important on-screen content.
- Confirm that the microphone is audible over desktop or game audio in OBS.
- Make sure the light points from in front of you and that its mount is secure and compatible.
- Trace cables from the devices to power and connections; keep them out of the walking path.
