To keep OBS streaming to YouTube from a Windows cloud PC, first make sure your channel is eligible for live streaming, then install and configure OBS on the cloud machine, connect it to a YouTube stream, and test the actual encoder and network before relying on it. OBS can reconnect after some interruptions, but neither OBS nor an unspecified cloud PC guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

Before you start: check YouTube eligibility and cloud PC suitability

Enable live streaming on your channel

Your YouTube channel must be verified, live streaming must be enabled, and the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start time. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming guidance.

Check the cloud PC rather than assuming it can handle the stream

OBS lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements. Meeting those requirements does not ensure that a particular machine can encode and stream successfully. Performance depends on the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and network conditions. Because cloud PC configurations differ, verify the instance’s Windows version, GPU and encoder availability, persistent storage, session behavior, network capacity, and restart/update handling with its provider, then test OBS on that actual instance. OBS’s system requirements do not establish the availability or performance of any specific cloud PC.

Install OBS and prepare a stream scene

  1. Install OBS Studio on the Windows cloud PC. On first launch, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard from Tools if it does not open automatically. Choose the option for streaming; the wizard uses your intended use, computer resources, and network conditions to suggest a starting configuration.
  2. Add the content source. For a prerecorded documentary or other video, add the source that will play it and confirm it behaves as intended. Add any additional scenes, graphics, or sources the broadcast needs. The source and scene setup is your responsibility; a cloud PC provider’s remote session may expose different devices and resources than a physical desktop.
  3. Check audio. Play the content and watch the OBS audio meters. Confirm the intended desktop or application audio is present and that microphone audio is included only if you want it. Remote sessions can expose different audio devices, so verify the actual instance rather than assuming local-device routing.
  4. Confirm the scene remains usable for a long run. Check that the intended source keeps playing and that switching scenes or restarting playback works as expected. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers the wizard, sources, audio, and initial testing.

Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Go live to enter the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the event you intend to use. Set its title, visibility, audience and schedule as appropriate for the channel and content.
  2. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the connection details. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find them.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, publish it, or send it to someone who should not control the broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
  4. Review the event’s latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop options. Choose latency based on how much interaction you need; DVR if viewers should be able to rewind; and encoder-controlled start or stop only if that is how you want the event managed. YouTube documents these choices in Manage live stream settings.
  5. Click Start Streaming in OBS and check that the Live Control Room receives the signal. Starting the encoder and making the event publicly available are distinct actions; confirm the event’s preview and live status in YouTube before sharing its watch page.

Choose output settings that the cloud PC can sustain

Use YouTube’s published H.264 values as a starting point, not a guarantee that your chosen cloud instance can maintain them. The figures below are YouTube’s current Help-page guidance; that page does not state a publication year.

Output YouTube H.264 minimum bitrate YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s H.264 figures, not a measurement of your cloud PC. YouTube lists separate settings for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; consult its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions if you use one of those codecs. For a first test, choose a conservative resolution and frame rate that the instance can encode continuously, then raise them only after checking both encoder performance and stream health.

  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: Use RTMPS where supported.
  • Upload capacity: YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom. Your sustained available upload must accommodate the outgoing stream plus that headroom; if using primary and backup streams, account for both bitrates as well. A provider’s advertised network speed alone does not establish the sustained capacity available to your instance.

Set the encoder, bitrate, output resolution, and frame rate in OBS’s Settings > Output and Settings > Video pages. Exact options can depend on the OBS version and encoders exposed by the cloud PC. Do not assume a GPU encoder is present just because the instance has a GPU.

Test before treating the stream as nonstop

  1. Start a private or unlisted test event, or use another event configuration appropriate to your channel, and stream from the actual cloud PC.
  2. Let the same kind of content, scene changes, and audio run long enough to reveal encoding or network problems. A brief successful test confirms only that the setup worked during that test; it does not establish 24/7 reliability.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, audio, and motion. Verify that the event opens on the intended channel/watch page and can be viewed on mobile.
  4. If you intend to keep a local recording, confirm that the archive file is being created, growing, and playable. This uses storage on the cloud PC, so check that the instance has enough persistent disk space and that files survive the provider’s session or restart behavior.
  5. Before the public run, confirm the event is configured as intended, OBS is connected, the content is playing, and the stream health is acceptable. During a continuous broadcast, check periodically; YouTube does not specify a universal monitoring cadence.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and watching stream health, while its computer live-streaming guidance covers preview and archive checks.

Plan for reconnects and other interruptions

OBS includes an automatic reconnect option in its streaming connection settings. It can help recover from some dropped connections, but it does not prevent interruptions or guarantee that every failure will recover cleanly. After a reconnect, check OBS’s connection state, the YouTube preview, and stream health; do not assume the audience-facing event resumed normally.

When OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects, the selected bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or the network path may be unstable. Reduce bitrate if needed, test a lower resolution or frame rate, and investigate the cloud provider’s network path. OBS recommends a wired network path where relevant, but users may not control networking from a cloud PC. Its connection troubleshooting guide explains dropped frames and network checks.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm the channel is eligible, the event is active, and the URL and key match that event. If you changed the key, update OBS. Keep the key private.
  • The preview is black or the video is missing: Check that the correct OBS scene is selected, its source is active, and the content is actually playing in the cloud session. Re-check source permissions and remote-session behavior on the provider’s instance.
  • Audio is missing: Watch OBS’s meters while the content plays. Select the correct audio device or source and verify that the remote session exposes it. A visible video source does not prove audio is being captured.
  • Dropped frames or unstable stream health: Lower the bitrate and, if necessary, output resolution or frame rate. Compare the sustained upload available to the instance with the stream bitrate and YouTube’s recommended headroom; ask the provider about network constraints if the issue continues.
  • Stream stops after a disconnect, restart, or update: Reconnect OBS, inspect the YouTube event, and confirm the source is playing again. Check the provider’s behavior for reboots, updates, remote sessions, and persistent storage; those details are provider-specific and are not established by OBS’s requirements.
  • The archive stops growing or is missing: Check OBS recording status, the chosen save location, free disk space, and whether that storage persists through instance restarts. Test playback of the resulting file before relying on it as a backup.

Keep prerecorded content within YouTube’s rules

Using OBS to send a prerecorded documentary as a live signal does not remove copyright or channel-policy obligations. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, including its music and other embedded material, and check YouTube’s current rules for your channel and format. A successful encoder connection is not evidence that the content is authorized or that a channel will qualify for monetization. Review YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and applicable copyright and monetization policies before running a long loop.
