To stream Malayalam devotional audio to YouTube from a Linux VPS, enable live streaming on your channel, prepare media you have rights to broadcast, then send it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest server with FFmpeg. A practical starting profile is 720p30 H.264 video at 3 Mbps, AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Test the complete path—including YouTube’s preview and recovery behavior—before relying on it unattended.
Before you begin: enable YouTube Live and prepare the stream
Your YouTube channel must be verified and have live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and the channel must not have live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Complete activation before scheduling a broadcast. See YouTube’s live streaming requirements.
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and choose the encoder workflow. Create or schedule the event and set its visibility for your intended test or broadcast.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for that specific stream. Use the RTMPS URL/settings YouTube provides when available.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public tutorial, screenshot, shared shell history, or public repository. YouTube describes the encoder setup in its stream-with-an-encoder guide.
Do not assume an old tutorial’s ingest URL is correct for your event. Use the endpoint and application path displayed in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL; its documented RTMPS ingestion uses port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Check rights for the audio, recording, and image
Devotional subject matter does not automatically make a recording free to rebroadcast. A traditional composition, a particular performance or arrangement, the sound recording, and the artwork may involve separate rights. Confirm you have the necessary permissions for every element in the stream, including worldwide streaming rights where applicable.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can cause a replacement image, interruption, or termination; even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains the platform’s response. Its livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the creator.
Choose a conservative encoder profile
For devotional audio with a still image or simple visual, 1280×720 at 30 frames per second is a sensible starting canvas. Use H.264 video and AAC stereo audio. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations distinguish frame rates and resolutions:
| Profile | Recommended video bitrate | Other relevant guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps; listed minimum 2 Mbps | Reasonable lower-bandwidth starting point |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | Do not confuse this with 720p30 |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | Requires more sustained network capacity than 720p30 |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps recommended | AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS; 44.1 kHz recommended |
For these profiles, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube advises not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS can sustain a stream. Leave bandwidth headroom for audio and protocol overhead, and check stream health from the VPS you plan to use. Full guidance is in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
H.264 is a broadly interoperable baseline for a first FFmpeg setup. YouTube’s general encoder information also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, but a more advanced codec is not necessary for this example.

Prepare the media and FFmpeg command
One file containing video and audio
If your authorized media file already contains both picture and sound, FFmpeg can take it as one input. The following is a command template, not a tested, ready-to-run command: replace the file path and the entire RTMPS destination with the values for your media and YouTube event.
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/owned-devotional-media.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -minrate 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/APP/STREAM_KEY'
This example transcodes to H.264 and AAC, sets a 3 Mbps video target, and uses 60 frames per GOP at 30 fps—two seconds between keyframes. It is an initial profile to test, not a substitute for checking the media’s actual frame rate, aspect ratio, audio tracks, or FFmpeg build. If your file is already encoded appropriately, stream copy may reduce CPU use, but only when the existing streams and container are compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements. FFmpeg documents the command structure, codec selection, and stream copy in its official documentation.
Separate audio file and still image
For separate inputs, loop the still image and audio so both remain available for the duration of the broadcast. The command below uses a JPEG image and an audio file as an illustrative setup. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg supports the chosen input options and codecs, then test the output rather than treating this as a verified production command.
ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i /path/to/owned-image.jpg
-stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/owned-devotional-audio.mp3
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -shortest
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -b:v 3000k -minrate 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,format=yuv420p"
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/APP/STREAM_KEY'
Here, -loop 1 and -framerate 30 precede the image input; -stream_loop -1 precedes the audio input. The maps explicitly select the image’s video and the audio file’s first audio stream. The scale-and-pad filter fits the image inside a 1280×720 frame without stretching it. With -shortest, output ends when the shortest input ends; because the image is looped, that will generally be the audio. For an indefinitely repeating audio playlist, use a deliberate playlist or concat design instead and test transitions and end-of-file behavior. Do not assume a command that works for one file layout will suit another.

How to read and protect the output URL
The final URL must be the RTMPS server URL and stream key from the event’s Live Control Room. Never publish a real key or leave it somewhere other users can read it, including shell history. For a service, put credentials in a restricted configuration or environment mechanism and limit access to the service account.
FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so ordering matters: input options go before their corresponding -i; output codecs, filters, bitrate, keyframe settings, and muxer go before the output URL. Consult FFmpeg’s command-line documentation for details, and check option availability against your installed version.
Run FFmpeg on the VPS and verify the event
- Choose a VPS based on sustained egress. Install FFmpeg using the operating system’s trusted package source or the project’s supported distribution method. There is no universal CPU, RAM, storage, or monthly transfer minimum established for this specific workload. Check the provider’s transfer accounting, network policies, and fair-use terms.
- Put media on the server securely. Upload or securely fetch files for which you have rights. Confirm paths, file access, and available disk space. Inspect the media and its streams before deciding whether to transcode or copy.
- Run the command interactively first. Watch FFmpeg’s logs for errors while YouTube receives the stream. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and verify that the event is receiving the expected video and audio.
- Check playback on real devices. Listen for silence, distortion, or clipping; confirm the visual is correct; and test the event page on a phone as well as a desktop.
- Only then configure unattended operation. Use a service manager or supervisor to start the process at boot and restart it after a process failure. Keep logs and arrange an alert or human check for stream failure.
A restart policy only starts a process again. It does not prove that YouTube’s event, the stream key, the media timeline, or the network path recovered correctly. Monitor Live Control Room’s stream health during an extended test, not just FFmpeg’s process status.
Test recovery before scheduling an unattended stream
Use a private or unlisted test event with suitable visibility. Start FFmpeg and wait for the preview before going live. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring audio and video quality; match the test’s audio and movement to the planned broadcast.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Test failure behavior deliberately in a controlled setting: stop FFmpeg and, if practical, interrupt the VPS network briefly. Observe both the encoder logs and what happens to the YouTube event. A process restart is not a verified failover, and seamless recovery should not be promised unless a backup encoder has been separately configured and tested. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Estimate VPS bandwidth for continuous streaming
At a selected 3 Mbps video bitrate, video alone transfers about 1.35 GB per hour before audio and protocol overhead. This is arithmetic from the bitrate (3 megabits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000), not a provider’s quoted transfer figure. For a 24/7 stream, calculate expected monthly egress from your actual bitrate and verify how your VPS provider counts outbound traffic. The 1080p30 H.264 recommendation of 10 Mbps needs substantially more capacity than 720p30 at 3 Mbps; if 1080p is not necessary, starting at 720p30 leaves more room for stable continuous audio and a clean visual.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- You cannot start a live event: check that channel verification and live-stream activation are complete, and that the channel has no live-stream restriction in the last 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- FFmpeg cannot connect: confirm the exact server URL, application path, key, and RTMPS settings from the current YouTube event. Check VPS network access and whether the endpoint and port are reachable; YouTube documents port 443 for RTMPS.
- YouTube receives video but not sound: inspect the input’s streams and verify the audio mapping. For separate inputs, ensure the audio file is the mapped input and that the output is encoded as AAC or MP3 with a supported sample rate and channel configuration.
- The image is stretched, cropped, or the wrong shape: verify the chosen output canvas and scale/pad filter. Check the source image dimensions and use a filter that preserves its aspect ratio.
- The stream buffers or health is unstable: check the VPS’s sustained egress, CPU load during encoding, and FFmpeg logs. Compare the chosen resolution and frame rate with the bitrate guidance; test at a lower-bandwidth profile such as 720p30 if appropriate.
- The stream stops when media ends: check whether the audio input reached end-of-file and whether the command uses
-shortest. A still image loop does not also loop the audio. Design and test a playlist or repeat strategy for the intended duration. - The stream is interrupted after it starts: check YouTube’s copyright notices and Live Control Room status. Verify rights for the recording, composition, performance, and artwork; a process restart cannot resolve a rights block.
- FFmpeg restarts but the event does not recover: inspect the event and stream health in Live Control Room, confirm the key is still correct, and test the recovery path rather than assuming a supervisor restart restored the broadcast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream Malayalam devotional audio with a still image?
Yes. FFmpeg can combine an audio input with a looped image input; the separate-input example above shows the basic mapping and output approach.
Is RTMPS different from RTMP?
RTMPS carries RTMP over SSL. YouTube recommends it for secure encoder ingestion; use the endpoint supplied for your stream.
Can I use a VPS restart policy as my only recovery plan?
No. It can restart FFmpeg after a process exit, but you still need to confirm the YouTube event and stream recover correctly.
