You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Hetzner Cloud server by creating a YouTube event, provisioning and securing a virtual machine, and running an encoder that sends your media to YouTube’s ingest URL. The server does not do this by itself: you must configure the media source, encoder, restart supervision, and monitoring. Test the full path in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it; a cloud server and a restart policy do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A video or other media source, plus an encoder that can read it and send a supported stream to YouTube.
- A Hetzner Cloud account and a server with adequate CPU, memory, storage, and outbound network capacity for your workload.
- SSH access to administer the server, and a plan for process supervision, monitoring, and handling failures.
This setup is for streaming media from a server, not broadcasting a live camera. The exact server size and encoder settings depend on the source and output you choose; there is no universally sufficient Hetzner plan established for this task.
1. Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility and create the event
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Eligibility is account-specific, so check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before provisioning the server.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create or select the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter both in the encoder to start streaming: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it in a tutorial, shell history, screenshot, or public repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the value in your encoder configuration.

2. Create a Hetzner Cloud server
- In Hetzner Console, create a server and choose its type, location, OS image, networking, and SSH key. Ubuntu is among Hetzner’s Cloud OS choices. See Hetzner’s server-creation guide.
- Add your SSH key during creation if possible. Hetzner’s guide notes that adding one later through the Console is not available, though other tooling can add a key.
- Choose a location for operational and network-path reasons. Hetzner recommends nearby locations for larger projects, but that does not establish a uniquely best location for YouTube ingest.
- Select resources according to the actual workload. Sending an already encoded file can use much less CPU than real-time transcoding. Monitor resource use and resize if needed rather than assuming one server type fits every resolution and frame rate.
Hetzner documents shared and dedicated server-resource categories, but the available documentation does not establish a stream-specific performance benchmark. Compare current server, traffic, and IP charges in Hetzner’s current pricing information before committing. Its overview, last changed 2022-06-28, listed Primary IPv4 at €0.50/month excluding VAT; treat that as dated documentation, not a guaranteed current price: Hetzner Cloud overview.
3. Connect securely and configure network access
Connect to the server over SSH using its public IP address and the SSH client on your computer; Hetzner describes the connection process in its guide to connecting to a server.

If you attach a Hetzner Cloud Firewall, its documented default blocks inbound traffic unless allowed and permits outbound traffic unless outbound rules are configured. For an encoder sending a feed to YouTube, preserve the outbound connectivity it needs and limit inbound access to administration. YouTube receives the stream; you do not need to open inbound media ports on the VPS for this workflow. Avoid hard-coding a supposed fixed YouTube destination IP or port unless you verify it against current YouTube ingest documentation.
4. Install and configure an encoder
Install an encoder that can read your media source and send it to the YouTube ingest URL. FFmpeg is one possible implementation, but the appropriate command and options depend on the input format, whether you are copying or transcoding, and the output requirements. No single FFmpeg command or server configuration is established as reliable for every source, so validate your chosen command and test its behavior on errors, restarts, looping, and timestamps before treating it as a continuous setup.

Choose pass-through or transcoding
- Pass-through or stream-copy: avoids real-time video encoding when the source already has compatible codecs and settings. Confirm the resulting stream is accepted and stable.
- Transcoding: changes codec, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, but increases CPU demand. The server must sustain that workload continuously without exhausting resources.
Match YouTube’s ingest settings
Use YouTube’s current recommended live encoder settings as the source of truth. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its listed video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the output you intend to send, and check that your source and encoder can sustain those settings.
YouTube transcodes an incoming live video for playback variants, but that does not remove the need for a valid, stable encoder feed. Do not pick a bitrate simply because a server has a particular network port speed: the source, encoder, and stable upload capacity all matter.

5. Test the stream and add recovery measures
- Start with a test feed and inspect the Live Control Room preview before the production event.
- Use representative motion and audio. Confirm the watch page plays as expected and check Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- Ensure available upload bandwidth exceeds the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; if you send primary and backup feeds, budget for both.
- Configure process supervision so the encoder can restart after a crash or server reboot. Choose an appropriate service manager or watchdog for your system; no specific one is required by YouTube or Hetzner.
- Set up monitoring or alerts for encoder state, resource exhaustion, and YouTube stream health. A restarted process may still fail to produce a healthy feed, so monitor the output as well as the process.
Supervision and monitoring reduce the time failures go unnoticed; they do not establish a service-level guarantee or prove that the stream will never be interrupted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Decide how to handle long-running events and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish archive behavior for an indefinitely running event, so do not assume a single 24/7 event will produce a complete, permanent replay. Check YouTube’s current event and archive guidance before deciding whether to use scheduled shorter events or preserve a separate local recording. The choice is a trade-off between continuity and the archive behavior you need.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream key is rejected: verify that you copied the key for the selected event and that it has not been reset. Replace it in the encoder if you reset it, and keep it private.
- Live Control Room reports poor stream health: check that the encoder uses the current YouTube ingest settings, that bitrate is stable, and that the network has the recommended headroom. Inspect the source and encoder logs for dropped frames or input errors.
- The stream stops after a process or server restart: configure process supervision to start the encoder on boot and after a crash, then test both cases deliberately.
- The server runs hot or the encoder falls behind: distinguish stream-copy from transcoding, review CPU and memory use, and reduce the workload or resize the server if the selected output cannot be sustained.
- The feed cannot connect despite a running encoder: check outbound connectivity and firewall egress rules. Do not open inbound media ports as a substitute for the encoder’s outbound connection.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: the stated automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not an indefinitely running event. Verify current YouTube guidance and maintain a separate recording if a local copy is required.
