A refurbished desktop can run a church’s YouTube stream around the clock if its actual hardware can handle the planned video and encoding settings, and the church plans for internet, power, archiving, and recovery. It is not enough for a computer to meet OBS’s minimum requirements: test the complete setup at the settings you intend to use. Also plan recordings carefully—YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.

Can a refurbished PC stream to YouTube all day?

Yes, if the specific PC can encode the intended scenes reliably and the church’s connection and power remain available. Treat “24/7” as an operational goal, not a guarantee from YouTube or the computer. A single desktop, ISP connection, or power source can fail; continuous operation requires monitoring and a recovery plan as well as suitable equipment.

This guide assumes a Windows desktop running OBS and sending a video feed to YouTube Live. The same planning principles apply to another encoder, but menu labels and controls may differ.

1. Confirm the church channel can go live

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so complete this well before the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Sign in to the church’s YouTube account and verify the channel if necessary.
  2. Enable live streaming and allow time for first-time activation.
  3. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
  4. Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS under its stream settings. The key identifies the destination and authorizes the encoder to send the feed; protect it as you would a password. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  5. Start OBS and check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the stream public or starting the scheduled broadcast.

Keep the stream key private and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Confirm the stream’s privacy, title, and schedule before launch. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring quality; see its streaming tips.

2. Check the actual refurbished desktop

OBS’s basic Windows requirements are Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. OBS explicitly cautions that meeting those requirements does not guarantee that a PC can stream or record: workload depends on the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity. Read the OBS system requirements and assess the exact machine rather than relying on a seller’s headline description.

  • Processor and graphics: Check which encoder options the PC supports and whether it can sustain the planned output. A fixed, low-motion shot is a different workload from a multi-camera layout with animated overlays.
  • Memory and storage: Confirm the operating system and OBS run reliably, storage is healthy, and there is enough free disk space for any local recordings.
  • Cooling and condition: Inspect fans, vents, and temperatures during a long test. A used machine that overheats or throttles is not a dependable unattended encoder.
  • Ports and capture hardware: Verify the connections needed for the church’s cameras, audio interface, and other sources. A desktop cannot use equipment it cannot connect to.
  • Operating system and updates: Confirm supported Windows operation and test how updates and restarts affect the broadcast.

Buy only after checking the exact specification, return window, and warranty terms. Then test the machine with the church’s real scenes and sources at the intended settings. No particular refurbished model, seller, price, warranty, or Indian availability is established here. OBS also explains how scene composition and GPU load affect encoding in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

3. Set a conservative output and measure upload

Start with a modest resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that both the PC and the measured internet upload can sustain. YouTube lists 720p at 30 frames per second with a recommended video bitrate of 2 Mbps among its encoder settings. It also recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular desktop or connection will hold steady. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the resolution and frame rate based on the source and the PC’s sustained encoding performance.
  2. Set a constant video bitrate appropriate to that format, use a two-second keyframe interval, and select RTMPS where available.
  3. Measure upload capacity—not just download speed—at the church, preferably at the times it expects to stream.
  4. Leave at least 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Account for audio, other users and devices on the network, and any planned backup output.
  5. Run a sustained test with representative motion and audio. Increase quality only if the test remains free of encoding overload and dropped frames.

Shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, and a speed test at one time does not prove stable capacity at another. ISP performance and power conditions vary by location; no address-specific Indian broadband or outage figures are established here. YouTube’s streaming tips explain upload headroom and network considerations.

4. Prevent the PC from sleeping and plan recovery

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery to configure screen, sleep, and hibernate timeouts. Prevent the desktop from sleeping or hibernating while it is encoding. The display can turn off independently if that does not interrupt the output. Microsoft documents these options in Windows 11 power settings.

Test, rather than assume, what happens after a power interruption, network restoration, Windows update, and reboot. Assign a named volunteer to receive alerts, check the stream, and know how to restart OBS and the broadcast. One desktop is not an encoder backup. A separate backup encoder or internet path helps only if it is configured and tested; YouTube describes testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network in its streaming tips.

5. Treat power and internet as separate failure points

A UPS can keep the desktop and network equipment running through a brief local power interruption. Size one based on the measured load of the devices it must support and the required runtime; no particular capacity or runtime is established here. A UPS cannot fix an ISP outage. Keep the router and relevant network equipment on backup power too if the goal is to ride through a short local interruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where practical, connect the desktop to the router using Ethernet. A wired link avoids relying on Wi-Fi between those devices, but it does not replace reliable internet service. For stronger continuity, consider the failure domains separately: local electricity, desktop and encoder, router and local network, ISP connection, and YouTube ingest. A second internet path, backup encoder, or monitoring volunteer may help, but only when there is a deliberate, tested procedure for using it.

6. Decide how to preserve recordings

A continuous stream and a complete replay archive are not the same thing. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive backup. Do not rely on a continuous 24-hour broadcast to produce a complete YouTube replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

If recordings matter, choose and test one of these approaches:

  • Local recording: Configure OBS recording, confirm the files are created and playable, and manage disk space and retention. Test whether the PC can stream and record simultaneously without overload.
  • Planned shorter sessions: Break the broadcast into shorter sessions and test the handoff procedure. A restart or handoff is an operational event, not an automatic guarantee of uninterrupted viewing.
  • Continuous watch page without a complete replay: Accept that YouTube may not capture a stream exceeding 12 hours, and make that archive limitation part of the church’s plan.

YouTube’s DVR guidance also describes limits that can affect rewind on very long streams.

7. Preflight and monitor the whole system

  • Confirm live access, privacy, title, schedule, and the correct stream key.
  • Test with the actual video and audio sources and representative motion—not only a static desktop image.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and open the watch page on a phone.
  • Verify stable upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom, including during expected busy periods.
  • Check OBS for encoding overload and dropped frames. If either appears, reduce scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then retest.
  • Verify that the local recording exists, grows as expected, and plays back; confirm disk capacity and retention.
  • Test power and network restoration, reboot behavior, and the volunteer’s recovery steps.
  • Name a person responsible for monitoring and specify how they will respond if the feed stops.

YouTube recommends using similar audio and movement in tests, monitoring stream health, checking local archives, and verifying the watch page. See its encoder guidance and streaming tips.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Dropped frames or an unstable feed Upload instability, shared network use, or a bitrate too high for sustained capacity. Measure upload during streaming hours, reduce bitrate if needed, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check whether other network users are consuming capacity.
OBS reports “encoding overloaded” The encoder settings, scene composition, or hardware demand exceed what the PC can sustain. Simplify scenes and overlays, lower resolution or frame rate, or reduce encoder demands. Retest with the actual production layout; see OBS troubleshooting guidance.
The stream stops after the computer has been idle Windows sleep or hibernate suspended the encoder. Review Settings > System > Power & battery, disable sleep and hibernate during operation, and test after changing the settings.
No complete YouTube archive appears The stream ran longer than 12 hours, or local recording was not configured or verified. Check the stream duration and archive settings; use tested local recording or planned shorter sessions if a complete archive is required. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
The broadcast drops during a power cut The desktop, router, or other network equipment lost power; a UPS may not cover every device or interruption. Check which devices were on backup power and whether the UPS runtime matched the load. Test the recovery procedure after power returns.
The PC is online but YouTube stops receiving video The ISP connection, route to YouTube ingest, encoder, or stream key may have failed. Check OBS and Live Control Room, confirm the internet path and stream configuration, then restart or switch to a tested backup path if one exists.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the church is looping uploaded recordings rather than broadcasting a live camera and microphone, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The do-it-yourself desktop method above remains the relevant path for live camera or audio sources.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add the church’s YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at the church, including the desktop or home connection. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it is not a live-camera encoder. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
