To set up a YouTube Live chatbot, connect a hosted bot such as StreamElements or Nightbot, give it the required moderator access, then configure and test a few commands, timers, and moderation rules. Most hosted bots join only while your broadcast is public and live. You can also use YouTube’s own moderation controls alongside the bot.
Choose a hosted bot or build your own
A hosted bot is the quickest route if you want commands, recurring messages, or chat filters without writing code. StreamElements and Nightbot both document YouTube setup paths. Their features and YouTube-specific limitations differ, so check that the functions you need are available for YouTube before building your stream workflow around them.
A custom bot built with the YouTube Live Streaming API offers a developer route, but requires API setup, authentication, and code to receive and process chat messages. It is not a no-code shortcut.
Set up StreamElements on YouTube

In YouTube Studio, go to Settings, then Community. Add the StreamElements account as a moderator, following the identity and account instructions in the guide.

Make your broadcast public and go live. StreamElements says its bot must be added to a public, live broadcast to join.

Open the StreamElements dashboard and configure the features you need. Its chatbot documentation covers custom commands, timers, spam filters, interactive modules, and user permission levels.

While testing, inspect YouTube’s Live chat view rather than relying only on Top chat; Top chat may hide bot messages.

Check YouTube-specific availability
StreamElements documents some features available on other platforms as unavailable for YouTube accounts, including loyalty-linked giveaways, viewer queue, stream store, and media requests. Confirm availability in its chatbot documentation before planning to use a particular module.
Set up Nightbot

Sign in to Nightbot and open its dashboard.

Use the dashboard’s Join button and follow Nightbot’s instructions for making the bot a moderator.

Make the YouTube broadcast public and live. Nightbot’s setup guide says it joins a YouTube channel only while the channel is live and the stream is public.

Use Nightbot’s control panel to configure custom commands and timers, then test them in the live chat.

Configure commands, timers, and moderation
Start with a small set of commands
Choose commands that answer recurring audience questions or help viewers navigate the stream. For each command, check its trigger syntax and who is allowed to use it. StreamElements documents permission levels for limiting command use; a command that is restricted to moderators or another role will not respond to viewers without that permission.
Use timers sparingly
Timers can post recurring information, but frequent or repetitive messages can crowd out conversation. Begin with only the announcements viewers need, then watch how they appear in the actual chat and adjust the timing in the bot dashboard.
Combine bot filters with YouTube controls
YouTube provides blocked words, options to hold potentially inappropriate messages for review using Basic or Strict moderation, and slow mode. Channel owners or managing moderators can change automatic moderation settings. Use these controls alongside bot rules, then check their effect during a test stream so legitimate audience messages are not unnecessarily delayed or held. Test before relying on the bot

Confirm the broadcast is public and live when the provider requires it.

Check the bot’s messages in YouTube’s Live chat view.

Test a command as an account with the permission level you expect viewers to have.

Test moderation settings with care and observe whether messages are blocked, held, or slowed as intended.

Troubleshoot a bot that is silent
The bot does not appear in chat
Check that the stream is both public and live, and that you completed the provider’s moderator setup. For StreamElements, also confirm the bot is active and has not been banned, ignored, or muted.
The bot is present but a command does not work
Check the command prefix and syntax, then verify that the command’s permission level allows the account trying it. StreamElements lists these checks in its chatbot troubleshooting documentation.
You cannot see a bot message
Switch from Top chat to Live chat in YouTube. Top chat can filter messages, including bot messages.
Build a custom bot with the YouTube API
For a custom implementation, Google documents a streaming gRPC client for receiving YouTube live chat messages. The documented example covers authentication and obtaining the active live chat ID from video details. You will need to set up API access and write code that connects to the live chat and handles incoming messages; consult Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide for the documented flow and requirements.
