In YouTube Studio, get the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room; for an API-managed setup, the liveStreams resource exposes primary and backup addresses. Configure the second encoder with the backup address and the stream’s credentials, then rehearse and monitor both feeds. YouTube documents redundant ingestion, but its reviewed guidance does not specify exactly when or how viewers switch if the primary encoder stops, so do not treat this as a guarantee of seamless failover.
What a second YouTube encoder does—and does not—protect
The primary VPS runs the main encoder and sends its feed to YouTube’s primary ingestion address. A separate encoder process on the second VPS sends a redundant copy of the same content to YouTube’s backup ingestion address. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents sending the same content to the backup URL simultaneously with the primary feed. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference.
This adds a second ingest path and can reduce dependence on one encoder host. It does not, by itself, make the source media, account credentials, provider network, or YouTube’s viewer delivery redundant. If both VPSs depend on the same source or upstream connection, that shared dependency can still fail. This is an architectural distinction, not a YouTube failover guarantee.
YouTube’s documentation reviewed here does not state a viewer-side switch time or promise that playback will continue without interruption when one encoder stops. Report what your own rehearsal demonstrates; do not assume a specific transition behavior.

Get the active stream’s backup address and credentials
For a stream created in YouTube Studio

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to retrieve and enter these values: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Find the backup ingestion URL supplied for the active stream. Use that address for the second encoder; do not substitute a remembered or hard-coded sample endpoint.

Store the stream key as a secret. Do not publish it, commit it to a repository, include it in public screenshots, or expose it in a command or configuration file that other users can read.

For an API-managed stream
The YouTube liveStreams resource includes ingestionAddress, backupIngestionAddress, rtmpsIngestionAddress, and rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Select the address matching the protocol you intend to use and the active stream configuration. The API reference is LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.

Configure the second VPS and encoder
Use the backup endpoint, not the primary endpoint
Set the second encoder’s destination to the active event’s backup ingestion URL. Keep the stream key private and enter the credentials required by the encoder’s YouTube workflow. If you choose RTMPS, use the RTMPS address and port 443; YouTube’s RTMPS guide also notes that the server hostname is needed for authentication through TLS SNI. Endpoint values are stream-specific, so obtain them from the current stream setup rather than copying an example. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
Match the primary feed’s media characteristics
For a redundant copy, configure both encoders to send the same program content with compatible resolution, frame rate, codec, audio mix, and keyframe cadence. Matching these settings is practical compatibility guidance for a redundant feed, not a separately stated YouTube requirement. Confirm the two encoders are not accidentally sending different scenes, audio mixes, or time-shifted material.
Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and keyframes every two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its recommended ingest bitrates include:

These are YouTube-published ingest recommendations, not a promise that a VPS can sustain the required upload. Each active encoder sends its own output, so provision sustained outbound capacity for each copy plus network overhead. Use the bitrate recommendation that matches your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other combinations and current guidance.
Choose the ingestion protocol

Rehearse the backup and monitor stream health

Before the event, run a controlled rehearsal with both encoders configured for their respective primary and backup addresses.

Use audio and movement similar to the real program. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Verify that the backup VPS is actively sending the expected feed and that YouTube reports stream health. Review any warnings or messages rather than assuming that a running encoder process means a healthy ingest.

Test the planned primary-interruption procedure and observe what happens in the actual viewer playback during the rehearsal. YouTube’s published guidance cited here does not establish exact viewer switching behavior or a recovery-time objective.

Repeat the check after changing the encoder, protocol, resolution, bitrate, VPS, or source path; those changes can affect the outcome.

VPS sizing, process recovery, and limits of the documented setup
The cited YouTube material does not specify a VPS provider, CPU or memory requirements for a particular encoder command, an operating-system service template, or automatic recovery for a crashed encoder process. Requirements depend on whether your process re-encodes or relays the source, as well as its resolution, codec, and network quality. Validate the chosen VPS and encoder under realistic load. Process supervision and restart behavior are separate from YouTube’s backup ingestion feature.

Keep the two hosts operationally separate where practical, restrict access to stream credentials, and make sure each process is pointed at its intended endpoint. A second VPS is useful only to the extent that it avoids the failure you are trying to mitigate; it cannot remove a shared source, credential, or provider-network dependency.
Common problems and fixes

The backup encoder connects to the wrong destination: check the active stream’s backup address and confirm the second VPS uses it rather than the primary address or a stale sample value.

RTMPS connection or authentication fails: confirm the RTMPS scheme, port 443, active event endpoint, stream credentials, and hostname handling required for TLS SNI.

YouTube reports unstable stream health: compare the configured codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations. Check sustained outbound capacity on each VPS, including overhead.

The backup feed differs from the main program: verify the source selection, audio mix, timing, and encoder settings on both machines. A second process does not automatically guarantee an identical feed.

The encoder process stops: investigate the host, encoder logs, source availability, and network path. YouTube’s backup URL does not itself restart a failed process; configure and test process supervision separately.

Viewers experience a pause during a primary interruption: document the observed behavior from your rehearsal. The official documentation cited above does not promise seamless switching or define its timing.
