To stream 4K at 60 fps from OBS on a Mac, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, connect OBS to a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, then choose a supported encoder and a stable ingest bitrate. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 4K60. Those are YouTube ingest recommendations—not a guarantee that a particular Mac or internet connection can sustain the stream.
The right encoder depends on your Mac: OBS documents H.264 streaming through Apple VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon and recommends x264 for streaming on Intel Macs. Test the complete scene and connection before relying on it for a broadcast.
Before you start: check the channel, Mac, and connection
- Enable YouTube Live early. If the channel has never streamed before, first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Check your Mac and OBS version. OBS lists macOS 11 or later and an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU as basic macOS requirements. Meeting them does not certify a Mac for a demanding 4K60 scene; performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements.
- Check the actual upload connection. You need stable upload capacity for the selected bitrate, plus room for normal network variation. A speed test is only a snapshot; validate the connection with a representative test stream.
- Confirm the source can supply 4K60. Check the camera, capture device, screen source, and scene configuration. Upscaling a lower-resolution source to 3840Ă—2160 does not add source detail.
Install OBS on macOS
- Download the official macOS OBS Studio DMG and open it.
- Drag OBS into the Applications folder, then launch it. Follow the macOS prompts that appear.
- In OBS, build the scene you intend to broadcast and confirm that its sources appear and behave as expected. The scene itself affects the workload, so test the real arrangement rather than an empty scene.
See the OBS macOS installation instructions if you need the installation details for your system.
Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open the Stream settings, select the available YouTube connection method or enter the stream URL and key, and save the connection. Interface labels may vary by OBS version.
- Keep the key private. It authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. YouTube supports creating a custom stream key that can be reused when appropriate. See YouTube’s live stream settings help.
Set OBS video output to 4K60
- In OBS video settings, set both the base (canvas) resolution and the scaled output resolution to 3840Ă—2160.
- Set the common frame rate to 60 fps.
- In Output settings, select an encoder supported by your Mac and set rate control to CBR (constant bitrate).
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Choose an ingest bitrate that matches the selected codec and that your upload connection can sustain steadily. The figures below are YouTube’s current live-ingest recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60 fps, not prerecorded-video upload recommendations.
| YouTube ingest codec | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These values are YouTube guidance, not independently measured performance figures. The codec options available in OBS depend on the encoder and Mac; do not assume that every codec in YouTube’s ingest guide is available through every Mac encoder. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as ingest codecs, recommends RTMP/RTMPS, and prefers RTMPS where available. Its guide also specifies CBR and the keyframe guidance above. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose the encoder for your Mac
Apple Silicon: VideoToolbox with H.264
OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but it does not guarantee that the full scene will render and encode without dropped frames. The specific chip, cooling, video sources, overlays, browser sources, and other active workloads can affect results.
Intel Mac: x264
OBS directs Intel Mac users to x264 for streaming. OBS says the Intel VideoToolbox streaming path does not support the constant-bitrate mode required by most streaming services. If x264 cannot keep up with your scene, simplify the scene or test a lower output resolution or frame rate.

Configure audio and SDR color
- Stereo: Use AAC audio at 44.1 kHz for a straightforward stereo stream, following YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- 5.1 surround: YouTube lists 48 kHz for 5.1 audio and supports 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.
- SDR color: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 with 8-bit depth for SDR.
These are SDR settings. HDR has separate format, bit-depth, encoder, and configuration requirements, so do not apply this basic SDR recipe to an HDR broadcast.

Test the stream before the event
- Start an unlisted or private test if that suits your event and channel setup.
- Use the same kinds of movement, audio, sources, overlays, and scene complexity planned for the real broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, picture, and sound. Confirm that the bitrate remains stable on the actual upload connection.
- Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems, and stream-health messages. If performance is unstable, reduce scene complexity or lower resolution or frame rate, then run the test again.
- Monitor stream health during the actual broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
YouTube says 4K/2160p live streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is unavailable at that resolution. If your program depends on near-real-time audience interaction, account for that delay when planning it. Testing and latency guidance are in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect or YouTube receives no video | Live streaming is not enabled, or the stream URL or key is incorrect. | Confirm channel activation in YouTube Studio, then verify the URL and key in OBS. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| Stream health reports an unstable connection | The connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate consistently. | Check the actual upload connection, prefer RTMPS where available, and test again at a bitrate the connection can sustain. A speed test alone does not validate a live stream. |
| OBS reports encoding overload or the stream drops frames | The Mac may be struggling with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity. | On Apple Silicon, try the documented VideoToolbox H.264 option; on Intel, use x264. Simplify overlays or sources, close unnecessary workloads, or lower the output resolution or frame rate and retest. |
| Picture looks soft despite a 4K output setting | The source may be lower resolution, or the selected bitrate may be insufficient for its detail and motion. | Check the source and capture chain’s actual resolution and frame rate. Upscaling does not create detail; retest with an appropriate bitrate and representative motion. |
| Audio is missing or in the wrong format | OBS audio routing or format does not match the intended stereo or surround setup. | Check the active audio source and meters in OBS, then verify that the stream preview contains sound. For YouTube’s listed settings, use AAC and 44.1 kHz for stereo; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC and uses 48 kHz. |
Optional hardware: when a capture card is relevant
A capture card is not required for screen-only streaming. Consider an HDMI capture card only if you need to bring a camera or console with HDMI output into OBS. Confirm the specific device’s Mac compatibility and 4K60 capabilities with its manufacturer before buying; those details are device-specific.
