Yes, an Intel NUC can run a YouTube stream continuously, provided the specific model can handle the encoding workload and you configure the computer, network, and recovery process to stay available. For a live camera or other live source, an encoder such as OBS on the NUC is the usual route. For a playlist of prerecorded videos, local playout is one option; a cloud service such as StreamNeo is another.

Choose the workflow and check your exact NUC

Start with the source, not a generic NUC recommendation. A camera feed, desktop capture, static graphic with audio, and playlist of prerecorded videos have different hardware and recovery needs.

  • Live camera: You need a camera output and a compatible capture or streaming path that remains online. The right interface depends on the camera’s outputs and the NUC’s ports.
  • Desktop or game capture: The NUC must receive the source and encode it; the required capture hardware depends on the source device and signal.
  • Static graphic with audio: The encoder still needs a continuous audio/video source and a plan for audio interruptions or file playback ending.
  • Prerecorded playlist: You need repeatable playback, accessible media files, and a way to recover playback and the stream after interruptions.

Find the NUC product code on its label and consult the specification for that exact unit. Intel’s NUC documentation and BIOS options vary by model and firmware, so do not assume another NUC’s graphics, power-recovery settings, or continuous-operation qualification applies to yours. Intel’s NUC12WS specification, for example, says that family is “Qualified for 24×7 sustained operation”; that statement is specific to NUC12WS, not all Intel NUCs.

Encoding capacity depends on the exact CPU and graphics hardware as well as resolution, frame rate, scaling, overlays, and audio processing. No single NUC model or performance benchmark can be recommended without those details.

Install OBS and connect the YouTube stream

  1. Install OBS Studio from the official OBS Project site. Build one simple scene with the actual camera, capture source, graphic, or media playlist you intend to run.
  2. Choose a connection method. If OBS offers YouTube account integration, connect the account there. Otherwise, open YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event, and enter the stream URL and key in OBS.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, publish it, or leave it in publicly accessible logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings.
  4. Check Quick Sync support. OBS supports Intel Quick Sync Video on Windows and Linux. OBS’s compatibility guidance says Core-i CPUs 2xxx or newer are required and recommends 4th-generation Core-i (Haswell) or newer for better output than early Quick Sync implementations. These are general compatibility notes, not a guarantee for every NUC SKU or codec.
  5. If Quick Sync is missing, check the exact processor’s graphics capability, whether integrated graphics are enabled in BIOS, and the operating system and graphics driver. Intel notes that integrated graphics must be enabled for this path. Do not conclude from the NUC name alone that it can or cannot use Quick Sync.

For a supported NUC, select the Intel hardware encoder in OBS. A hardware encoder can reduce reliance on CPU encoding, but still test the complete scene: overlays, scaling, audio filters, and capture can all affect the machine’s load.

Set OBS for YouTube Live

Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you choose. The following H.264 figures are YouTube Help’s minimum and recommended video bitrates as accessed on October 3, 2026; the recommended figure is not the minimum.

Use the YouTube Help encoder settings page to verify the current values for other output modes before going live; the table can change. These are video bitrate figures, not a promised minimum household upload speed. Allow headroom for audio and network variation, and test your actual wired or wireless uplink rather than treating the encoder bitrate as a speed test.

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP.
  • Video: Use progressive output and a resolution/frame rate that the NUC can encode reliably from the real source.
  • Audio: Use AAC stereo and verify the correct input, level, and channel selection in OBS.

YouTube recommends testing before the stream with audio and movement similar to the real programme, then monitoring stream health during the event. Check the YouTube encoder setup and bitrate guidance for the current ingest requirements.

Keep the NUC, source, and network running

  1. Disable sleep and hibernation using the operating system’s power settings. Confirm that a display timeout does not also suspend the computer.
  2. Arrange OBS startup and restart using the supported startup or service mechanism for the NUC’s operating system. Test after sign-in and after a full reboot; launching OBS is not proof that the stream has reconnected.
  3. Use wired Ethernet if practical. It reduces dependence on Wi-Fi conditions, though it does not prevent an ISP or router outage.
  4. Keep cooling unobstructed. Place the NUC in a ventilated location and do not block its vents. Intel’s thermal and airflow guidance is model-specific; there is no universal temperature target or fan setting for every NUC.
  5. Check power recovery in the exact BIOS. Look for an “after power failure” or equivalent setting in the documentation for your unit. Menu names and availability differ. An optional UPS can keep the NUC, router, modem, and required camera or capture hardware powered through a short interruption; size it for the actual load and desired runtime. It will not fix an ISP outage, failed encoder, or YouTube ingest problem.

Intel documents model-specific power-management behavior. A NUC12WS specification also describes an RTC reset after three failed boot attempts, but that is not an automatic OBS restart or a guarantee that a YouTube broadcast resumes after software or internet failure.

Test the full chain and plan recovery

  1. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using the actual content, source hardware, audio, motion, overlays, and intended settings.
  2. Confirm that OBS shows a stable connection and YouTube Live Control Room reports healthy ingest. Verify the public playback and audio from a different device.
  3. Test an OBS restart and a full NUC reboot. If appropriate, test router or modem recovery too. Record whether the same YouTube event resumes or whether a new event must be created; event lifecycle and auto-start/auto-stop settings can affect viewer continuity.
  4. Monitor YouTube Live Control Room and the operating system’s logs or health tools while the stream runs. Set a human check or alert routine suitable for the stream’s importance.

Neither OBS nor YouTube guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. The source, power, network, encoder, event settings, and response to failures all matter. Verify the recovery behavior you actually need instead of assuming that a reconnect will preserve one continuous viewer experience.

Keep live-source and prerecorded-video options separate

For a live camera

Use the camera’s supported streaming output or a compatible capture interface, then bring that source into OBS or another encoder. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists CamStreamer for certain Axis cameras and describes continuous operation; that is a vendor-specific option, not a general recommendation for every camera. See YouTube’s encoder directory and confirm camera and NUC compatibility before choosing hardware.

For a prerecorded playlist

Local playback through an encoder keeps the files and playout under your control, but the NUC, storage, and network must remain available and playback must repeat as intended. For cloud playout of prerecorded videos, YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a service for 24/7 playback. That option is for a prerecorded library, not a live camera feed; verify its current fit and terms with the provider.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the source is a prerecorded video or playlist rather than a live camera, StreamNeo runs a YouTube stream from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It offers one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not take a live camera feed. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS cannot select Quick Sync: Verify the NUC’s exact CPU/iGPU, enable integrated graphics if the BIOS offers that setting, and check the OS and graphics driver. Some models or configurations may not support the desired encoder.
  • YouTube reports unstable or poor ingest: Check the selected bitrate against YouTube’s current recommendation for the codec and output mode, confirm CBR and the two-second keyframe interval, and test the uplink with headroom. Try wired Ethernet if available.
  • Stream stops when unattended: Recheck sleep and hibernation settings, OBS startup/restart behavior, and whether the source itself remains active. A machine reboot or application launch does not necessarily restore the same live event.
  • Video works but audio is silent or wrong: Confirm OBS’s selected audio input, device power, channel routing, and levels while monitoring a representative test from another device.
  • NUC slows down or shuts down: Check ventilation and model-specific thermal guidance, then reduce resolution, frame rate, scaling, or scene complexity if the hardware cannot sustain the chosen workload.
  • Power returns but the broadcast does not: Confirm the BIOS recovery option for the exact model, then separately test OS startup, OBS restart, and YouTube event reconnection. These are distinct recovery stages.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for documentary streams

A 24/7 schedule does not grant rights to the documentaries, music, photographs, or other material being broadcast. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before publishing. Repeatedly looping the same material is also not a substitute for complying with YouTube channel monetization and reused-content policies; eligibility and enforcement depend on YouTube’s current rules and the channel’s content. Review the applicable terms in YouTube Help before relying on a stream for monetization.
