Recommended Free Tools
You can run a YouTube lofi stream from a Mac mini by preparing music and visuals you have the rights to use, connecting an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live, and keeping the Mac, network and power available. That makes a continuous stream possible, not guaranteed: outages, software or platform interruptions, account status and copyright enforcement can all take it offline.
This guide walks through the local setup, YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, an overnight test and the limits of long-stream archives. YouTube’s official guidance does not establish a Mac mini-specific unattended configuration or guarantee a particular level of reliability.
1. Prepare the lofi music, visuals and rights
Before configuring the stream, assemble the material and playback plan:
- Audio: Use music you composed or have permission to use in a YouTube livestream. Check that permission also covers any archived replay, the territories where you expect to stream, monetization, the licence term and Content ID handling.
- Visuals: Prepare a video or scene for the stream. Make sure you have the necessary rights for illustrations, footage, fonts and other included assets as well as the music.
- Playback: Decide how the encoder will keep the intended video and audio playing or restart them. Rehearse the full sequence rather than assuming a single file or playlist will loop unattended.
- Records: Keep copies of licences and permission correspondence. “Royalty-free” on its own does not establish that a track is cleared for every use you have planned.
YouTube requires creators to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights worldwide under its Livestream Terms and Conditions. It scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt a broadcast. Even a licensed track may cause a disruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel; see YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams. A licence should be checked against livestream use specifically, not just ordinary video uploads.

2. Activate YouTube Live and create the stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, and open the Live Control Room.
- Create a stream and choose its details and visibility. If the channel has already streamed, YouTube may let you reuse previous stream settings.
- Locate the stream URL and stream key for the encoder handoff. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio.
- If this is the channel’s first livestream, allow time for activation. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow for the Live Control Room steps and the selected stream mode. Depending on that mode, you may need to complete a final go-live action in Studio after the encoder starts sending video.
3. Set up the Mac mini and OBS
- Install OBS Studio from its official source and consult the current OBS Knowledge Base for its getting-started, streaming, audio and troubleshooting guides.
- Create a scene containing the intended visual and audio sources. Configure your chosen media playback so it sustains the programme you rehearsed; check the current OBS media-source instructions for the exact controls in your installed version.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, connect the YouTube service if available, or enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Check that both picture and sound reach YouTube, that the audio is audible without clipping, and that playback continues through the whole planned sequence.
OBS is a practical encoder option, but the official documentation does not establish a Mac mini model, macOS version or OBS configuration as a tested unattended 24/7 recipe. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications describe available hardware, not a certification or uptime guarantee for continuous streaming.

4. Choose settings the internet connection can sustain
Pick a resolution and frame rate based on what the actual upload connection can hold steadily. For a mostly static or lightly animated lofi scene, 1080p at 30 fps is a reasonable starting point—not a requirement. Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate may be a better choice if it makes the stream more stable.
| Ingest format | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder video bitrates, not minimum home-internet plans. YouTube separately lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for 1080p30 H.264. Test upload speed at the Mac mini’s location and at the time you expect to stream, then leave headroom for network overhead and other household traffic. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so the ingest setting is not a promise of the exact playback quality each viewer receives.

- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. H.264 is a common choice for a straightforward OBS setup.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3, both listed by YouTube.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends it as the encrypted extension of RTMP.
Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before launch; platform recommendations can change. Settings that match the guide cannot compensate for an unstable connection.
5. Rehearse, go live and plan for interruptions
- Test with the same resolution, bitrate, scene and audio you intend to use live. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate, doing an end-to-end test and monitoring stream health.
- Start streaming from OBS and confirm that YouTube receives a healthy preview in Live Control Room. Complete the go-live step there if your selected mode requires it.
- Watch the stream and check the audio, playback and Studio health messages. Test the complete loop overnight before presenting the channel as continuously available.
- For a local setup, keep the Mac mini awake and connected to reliable power and network. Wired Ethernet, a UPS, remote monitoring, automatic relaunch and backup internet are optional resilience measures; none guarantees uninterrupted service.
A Mac mini and encoder can send a stream, but continuity also depends on home power and internet, the encoder and operating system, YouTube’s service, channel status and rights enforcement. Decide who will notice a failure and how the stream will be restarted. YouTube may drop a connection or interrupt a stream; the local setup described here does not by itself provide automatic recovery.

6. Decide how to handle replays longer than 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will become one automatic replay. If archived sessions matter, plan shorter broadcasts and deliberate restarts before the limit, then verify the resulting archives in Studio. Ending and restarting changes the live session and watch page, so plan how viewers will find the next session. Keep a local recording if your encoder workflow supports it and you need a separate copy.
See YouTube’s encoder workflow and archive guidance for its current details.

7. Know that monetization is not guaranteed
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and assess whether content is original and authentic. The policy says generic, repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible, and review considers the channel and its videos. A lofi stream’s looped format alone does not determine eligibility; the originality of the music, visuals, curation and presentation matters. Do not treat a simple loop as a guarantee of YouTube Partner Program acceptance.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a first livestream: Activation may still be pending. YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours for first-time live streaming to become available.
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS is streaming, the server URL and stream key are correct, and the Mac has internet access. If the key was exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Preview is unstable or stream health reports problems: Check upload stability at the stream location, reduce resolution or bitrate, and repeat the test with other household network use in mind.
- Playback stops or the scene goes silent: Recheck the media playback and audio-source setup in OBS, then rehearse the entire sequence rather than only the opening minutes.
- The live broadcast is interrupted over music: Review the rights for livestream use and contact the rights owner about allowlisting if applicable. A licence alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- No single replay appears for a very long stream: Continuous streams longer than 12 hours are not assured one automatic archive. Check Studio and use planned shorter sessions if replays are important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not leave a Mac mini running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The same plan features apply across billing lengths. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and music rights, YouTube policies and the 12-hour archive consideration still apply.
