You can keep a lo-fi radio stream live on YouTube by looping licensed audio and a visual on a Linux VPS, encoding them with FFmpeg, and sending the feed to YouTube over RTMPS. A systemd service can restart FFmpeg after a process failure or server reboot, but it does not guarantee that YouTube will stay connected or that the stream will always be healthy. Before paying for a VPS, check channel eligibility, music rights, and the plan’s outbound transfer allowance.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours; its general live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-streaming tips.
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU capacity to encode your chosen video settings and enough monthly outbound transfer for an uninterrupted stream.
- Audio and a visual file you have the rights to use for continuous live streaming. Test that they play correctly and use formats FFmpeg can read.
- FFmpeg, a protected place on the server for the YouTube ingest URL and stream key, and a systemd service to manage the encoder process.
Choose a VPS by transfer allowance, not its headline price
A nonstop stream sends data all month. Estimate outbound usage from the combined video and audio bitrate: multiply bits per second by the number of seconds streamed, divide by eight to convert bits to bytes, and add headroom. A static or lightly animated visual can make a modest video bitrate practical, but test the actual output and confirm the VPS can encode it reliably.
The following figures are dated examples reported by StreamNeo in 2026, not current India checkout quotes or independently confirmed provider prices. Region, tax, exchange rate, IPv4 charges and excess-transfer fees can change the bill; check the provider’s checkout for your chosen location and projected traffic.
| Example plan | Reported price and transfer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | US$4 with 500 GiB transfer | Reported by StreamNeo in 2026; not an India-specific quote. |
| DigitalOcean plan | US$12 with 2,000 GiB transfer | Reported by StreamNeo in 2026; not an India-specific quote. |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux bundle | US$7 with 2 TB transfer | Reported by StreamNeo in 2026; not an India-specific quote. |
| Hetzner CX23 in Germany or Finland | €5.49/month after a June 2026 adjustment | Reported by StreamNeo in 2026; excludes IPv4 and VAT and is not an India-specific quote. |
These examples are useful for comparing plan structures, not for predicting the cost of a VPS in India. Compare the full regional checkout total and the included transfer against your stream’s projected monthly use. The relevant cost comparison is not just VPS versus VPS: include possible overage, regional add-ons, and the time you will spend maintaining the server.

Prepare YouTube and protect your stream key
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and allow time for first-time activation before your planned launch.
- Create or schedule a livestream in YouTube Studio and choose the encoder connection option. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Follow its current encoder connection instructions.
- Store the ingest URL and key in a server-side configuration file with access restricted to the account running FFmpeg. Treat the key like a password: do not commit it to a repository, include it in screenshots, or leave it in public command history.
- Use RTMPS when YouTube provides it for the ingest destination. RTMPS is the secure RTMP option recommended in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Loop media with FFmpeg and run it under systemd
The basic design is to loop prepared media, combine the audio and visual into one output, and publish it to YouTube. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the source formats, whether audio and video are in one file or separate files, and whether the VPS will encode or copy each stream. A community Ubuntu example documents looping media and running FFmpeg under systemd; treat it as an implementation example, not a tested recipe or reliability guarantee: example implementation.
- Upload and validate the media. Put the visual and audio files in a directory accessible to the service account. Play them locally or inspect them with FFmpeg before configuring a long broadcast. Decide whether the visual is a still image, a looping video, or a video playlist; ensure the intended audio continues without gaps.
- Install FFmpeg for your VPS distribution. Use the package source appropriate to the Linux release on your server. Confirm the installed FFmpeg can read your media formats before attempting a live connection.
- Test a short stream first. Start with a brief broadcast to verify that YouTube receives both audio and video, the image is legible, and the sound is continuous. Do not make the first test a 24-hour launch.
- Set encoder parameters. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance specifies AAC at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Choose a video resolution and bitrate that the VPS can encode and its network can sustain; there is no single safe bitrate for every media file or VPS size. YouTube lists H.264 among its video codec choices and recommends testing representative audio and motion. See its encoder settings guidance.
- Configure systemd after the test works. Run FFmpeg as a service under a dedicated, unprivileged account where practical. Configure it to start at boot and restart after a process failure, and direct logs somewhere you can inspect. Keep the stream key out of the unit file if it would be exposed to users who can read it; restrict permissions on any configuration file containing credentials.
- Test recovery deliberately. Enable the service, reboot the VPS, and deliberately restart the FFmpeg process during a test. Check the logs and YouTube’s stream-health panel after each event. A running process or active systemd unit alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Music rights can stop the stream
A lo-fi label, a track being freely available online, or a license receipt by itself does not establish that you can use the music in a YouTube livestream. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. The terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube live-stream terms and make sure the rights cover the intended live use and territory.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you have a license, a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID to avoid interruptions. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm any required allowlisting before launch.
Plan separately for a 24/7 broadcast and its replay
A continuous broadcast is not necessarily a continuous replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s archive guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If keeping a replay matters, schedule shorter broadcast sessions or make a separate local recording, and retain a local archive as a backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshooting a VPS lo-fi stream
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that live streaming is enabled, the stream is scheduled or started in Studio, and the ingest URL and key are correct. Replace a key only through YouTube Studio and update the protected server configuration if you do.
- Audio or video is missing: Confirm both inputs are readable and that the FFmpeg output maps the intended streams. Repeat the short test while watching YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- The picture stutters or the VPS struggles: Reduce the encoding workload by choosing a lower video mode or bitrate the host can sustain, then test again. Monitor CPU and outbound transfer during representative motion, not only a static screen.
- The stream drops and does not return: Inspect systemd and FFmpeg logs to see whether the process exited or is repeatedly failing. Confirm the service is configured to restart and that its credentials and media paths remain accessible after a reboot.
- The process is running but viewers see problems: Check YouTube’s stream-health panel. Process uptime does not establish that the feed is reaching YouTube correctly.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced: Investigate a copyright match and verify both the scope of your music rights and any required Content ID allowlisting.
- The broadcast ended but no full replay exists: Streams beyond YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit may not be captured. Use shorter sessions or a separate local recording when replay retention is important.
