You can use FFmpeg on Debian to loop a prepared video into YouTube Live: confirm your channel is eligible, create a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its RTMPS server URL and private stream key, configure FFmpeg, then supervise it with systemd and YouTube Studio. The setup can restart a failed FFmpeg process, but a process running does not guarantee a healthy broadcast or uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Before you install anything: check channel eligibility

YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old to live stream. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before building an unattended setup: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream using the encoder/streaming workflow. Follow Studio’s current prompts; labels and layout can change.

  2. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS server URL when available; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and RTMPS guidance.

  3. Treat the key as a password. Do not publish it, place a real key in a tutorial command, expose it in a screenshot or public repository, or include it in shared logs. The commands below use a placeholder; replace it only in your private configuration.

Choose settings YouTube and your Debian host can sustain

Do not select a bitrate by copying a number from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s bitrate table to match the chosen resolution and frame rate, and test your actual upload connection. The settings and table are in YouTube’s encoding recommendations.

  • Choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection and encoder can sustain reliably; more pixels are not useful if the connection drops frames.

  • Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds as recommended, keeping it at four seconds or less.

  • H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical compatibility-oriented example, not YouTube’s only supported combination.

  • Run a test with movement and audio similar to the intended programme, then inspect YouTube Studio’s preview, warnings and stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Install FFmpeg and check the Debian build

Install FFmpeg from the package source appropriate to your Debian release, then inspect the installed version and available encoders before using a command. Debian’s FFmpeg manual documents its input/output model and option ordering; options generally apply to the next input or output, so place input options before the relevant -i and output options before the destination. Consult the FFmpeg manual pages for Debian for the version installed on your machine. Builds differ, so confirm that the encoders you intend to use are present.

Loop a prepared video into YouTube Live

This illustrative command shows the shape of a single-file loop. It has not been tested against your Debian host or media file. In particular, its example bitrate is not a universal recommendation: check the current YouTube table for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and verify that your FFmpeg build includes libx264.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/live/loop.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely; put it before the input it applies to. -re reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. Replace the ingest URL with the exact server URL from Studio and replace the key placeholder privately. FFmpeg’s option order matters: output codec, rate, and format options go before the destination. The command assumes the input contains both video and audio.

If the file has no audio

Do not assume a video-only input will behave as desired at ingest. Configure an intentional audio source or a supported silent audio track, then test the result in Studio. The cited platform guidance does not prescribe one universal FFmpeg method for creating silence.

If video and audio come from separate playlists

Plan the loop lengths and synchronization rather than assuming independent loops will stay aligned. Test the exact media and command; there is no single playlist construction specified in the cited official guidance.

Keep FFmpeg running with systemd

For an unattended host, run FFmpeg under a dedicated, restricted account that can read only the required media and configuration. Keep the stream key in a root-readable configuration file or another suitable secret mechanism, not in a broadly readable unit file. A systemd service can restart FFmpeg after failure; Debian’s systemd documentation recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services and notes that restart attempts are subject to start-rate limits. See the systemd service documentation.

A service unit can use a short delay such as RestartSec=5s alongside Restart=on-failure. Treat that delay as an example, not a guarantee of recovery time, and configure start limits so a persistent error does not cause an uncontrolled restart loop. Store secrets with permissions appropriate to the service account and avoid printing the key in diagnostic output.

Monitor process health and the actual broadcast

Use systemctl status and the system journal to diagnose whether the process starts, exits, or repeatedly restarts. Then check YouTube Studio’s preview, connection state, warnings, and stream health. An active service can still be sending rejected ingest, frozen media, or an unhealthy upload. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream in its encoder guidance.

  • FFmpeg exits immediately: inspect the journal for a bad input path, unsupported encoder, malformed URL, or permissions issue; verify the installed build and media access.

  • Video plays but audio is absent or wrong: confirm that the input has the expected audio stream and that the chosen audio encoder and settings are supported.

  • The service keeps restarting: inspect the journal and correct the underlying failure before relying on automatic restart. Start-rate limits can stop repeated restart attempts.

  • Playback stutters or stream health degrades: test with a lower resolution or bitrate supported by YouTube’s current table and check whether the host and upload connection can sustain the selected profile.

Plan broadcasts, archives and recovery deliberately

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what will happen to one continuous broadcast after 12 hours, so do not assume an indefinitely long session will be archived or remain uninterrupted. Confirm current Studio behavior and decide whether planned shorter sessions better meet your needs for archiving, discoverability, and recovery. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

“24/7” is an availability goal for the overall setup, not proof that one broadcast will run forever without interruption. systemd can restart a failed encoder process, but it does not repair every network, media, ingest, account, or platform problem. Test the complete workflow and retain a way to inspect Studio and the host when something goes wrong.

Account for the trade-offs of self-hosting

A Debian machine you already own gives you control over the encoder and media files, but it depends on that machine, its power, network connection, and maintenance. A rented Linux server moves the host elsewhere but adds a recurring service cost; no single provider or price is established here. Hardware requirements and performance depend on the media and encoding profile, so test your own machine rather than assuming a particular CPU, memory size, or hardware encoder is sufficient.

For a documentary channel, make sure you have the rights needed to stream and repeatedly loop every video, soundtrack, and other included material. Technical ability to rebroadcast a file does not establish permission under copyright law or YouTube’s policies. Review YouTube’s current rules and resolve rights for the actual content before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the prepared video to keep running without leaving a Debian computer or home connection on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
