You can run a 24/7 YouTube channel with seasonal programming, but YouTube’s own playlists do not automatically change the videos playing inside a continuous live stream. Use YouTube playlists to organize what viewers can browse; use an encoder or hosted playout service to send and rotate the actual live feed. To change seasons reliably, set up a dated rotation in that playout system and test the handoff before it goes live.
Choose how the live feed will run
A continuous channel needs a source that sends video to YouTube Live. There are two practical models for pre-recorded programming:
- Your own encoder: A software or hardware encoder plays your media and sends it to YouTube. You control the files and rotation, but the encoder and its internet connection must remain available. YouTube describes encoder streaming for productions that need overlays or audio equipment; dedicated hardware is an option for higher-production events, not a universal requirement. - A hosted service: The provider handles playout in the cloud, so you do not need to keep a local computer running. Check whether its scheduling supports your exact seasonal calendar, how it handles loops and transitions, and any plan or run-duration limits before depending on it.
For a specific provider example, OneStream Live’s help page says its 24/7 YouTube feature requires an Enterprise plan and allows a maximum duration of 30 days. Check channel eligibility and content rights
Confirm live streaming is available
Verify the channel and make sure live streaming is enabled before you build the schedule. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says creators must be at least 16, and its eligibility guidance says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. A creator with an active live-stream restriction must not use another channel to evade it. Clear every video and music track
Before assembling a seasonal rotation, confirm that you have worldwide rights to rebroadcast every documentary, excerpt, image, and music track in the program. Public availability does not grant rebroadcast permission. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including relevant music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other participants. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and its live-streaming guidance; also follow the Community Guidelines.
Create the YouTube Live destination
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live. Create a new stream or reuse suitable settings. For the encoder workflow, see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Set the stream details. Add an accurate title and description, choose privacy and audience settings, and schedule the stream if you want viewers to find it in advance. Check the relevant options in YouTube’s live-stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and key. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder and check the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
Separate viewer playlists from the live playout rotation
Organize videos viewers can browse
Create public YouTube playlists for seasons, themes, or documentary series. YouTube lets you set a playlist’s title, description, visibility, and video order; in Studio, you can manually reorder items by dragging them. See YouTube’s playlist-management instructions and the Studio playlist guide.

Schedule the content that actually airs
The playlist displayed on your channel is not necessarily the playlist an encoder is playing into the live stream. The official playlist controls document creation and manual ordering, not an automatic seasonal switch in the content of an ongoing live broadcast. Scheduled publishing controls when an individual uploaded video becomes public; it is not a live playout scheduler. See YouTube’s scheduled-publishing instructions.
Set the rotation in the encoder or hosted playout system that supplies the feed. For each seasonal block, define the start date and time zone, video order, whether items repeat or shuffle, what should play if an item fails, and who is responsible for making the change. If your playout system cannot schedule a future switch, arrange a person to change it and verify the handoff at the specified time; do not assume YouTube will switch it for you.

Configure and test the encoder
Give the stream a reliable connection
YouTube recommends leaving upload capacity beyond the total stream bitrate: its streaming tips advise 20% of headroom. When planning for a primary and backup encoder, account for primary plus backup plus that additional 20% in outbound bandwidth. The recommendation is from YouTube’s streaming tips; actual stability still depends on your connection and equipment. Use a wired connection where practical, test the full program, and monitor sound and picture rather than relying on the encoder’s status alone.
Allow time for setup and preview
For scheduled encoder streams, YouTube advises setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. Preview the feed in Live Control Room, open the public watch page on another device, and check mobile playback, audio levels, overlays, and the first and last seconds of each seasonal transition. Test recovery and archiving
If you use a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network and confirm that the backup reaches YouTube as intended. Keep local copies of source files and check any local recording you rely on. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended; that statement should not be read as a promise that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a single complete archive. A scheduled stream can be shared before it starts, and viewers may opt into a reminder. Organize completed live archives and highlight clips into the relevant channel playlists so that viewers can find seasonal material after the broadcast. For a continuous channel, maintain a written operations calendar with the next switch time, responsible person, and fallback plan; check the live feed after each change rather than assuming a playlist edit took effect in the encoder.
