To run a continuous Indian music internet-radio stream, deploy AzuraCast on a Linux VPS using its recommended Docker installation, then configure a station, upload properly licensed recordings, and enable AutoDJ playlists. The software can automate playback, but it does not grant music rights. Before broadcasting, confirm in writing that your permissions cover the recordings, musical works, internet use, and territories involved.
This guide covers a self-managed radio-style stream. A single VPS can need maintenance or fail, so “24/7” describes the intended schedule, not guaranteed uptime.
What you need before setup
- A Linux VPS compatible with Docker and sufficient disk space for your audio library.
- A domain or subdomain if you want to use AzuraCast’s Let’s Encrypt HTTPS setup.
- Administrator or sudo access to the server, plus a plan for backups and updates.
- Written confirmation of the music rights needed for your catalogue and distribution.
AzuraCast recommends Docker for most installations and describes the software as server-based. Its documentation lists one-click installer options for Linode (Akamai), Vultr, and DigitalOcean, as well as self-installation. Choose VPS resources for your station
AzuraCast’s published figures are software requirements and recommendations, not promises about listener capacity. Actual needs depend on your media library and stream or transcoding workload. Start with the official guidance, then monitor the server as the station runs.

See AzuraCast’s requirements for the current requirements. When comparing VPS plans, check server location relative to listeners, bandwidth or egress terms, included backup or snapshot options, support, and whether you can expose the ports your installation needs. Do not choose a plan on disk or CPU alone if its network terms are unsuitable.
Install AzuraCast with Docker
- Create a fresh VPS. Choose a Linux host compatible with Docker and AzuraCast. The Docker guide recommends a fresh, minimal host; avoid piling unrelated services onto the same machine unless you understand their resource and security impact.
- Connect with administrative access. Open an SSH session using an administrator account or an account with sudo access. Keep credentials private and use your provider’s security controls.
- Follow the current official Docker guide. Use the installer instructions and commands on AzuraCast’s Docker installation page. The guide also provides unattended installation guidance suitable for cloud-init. Commands can change, so copy them from the current documentation rather than relying on an old tutorial.
- Complete the web setup. After installation, open the AzuraCast web interface and complete its setup flow. Create a station in the interface, then add the audio files you are entitled to broadcast.
- Set up AutoDJ and playlists. Configure station playlists and AutoDJ so the station has a defined rotation or schedule. AzuraCast includes Liquidsoap for AutoDJ and Icecast-KH as its broadcasting frontend; see About AzuraCast for the software’s described components.
- Verify playback from outside the VPS. Use the station’s public player or mount point from a separate device or network. Confirm that audio starts, continues through playlist changes, and is reachable without logging into the server. Do not treat a working admin page as proof that listeners can reach the stream.
Configure a domain and HTTPS
For AzuraCast’s Let’s Encrypt setup, a domain or subdomain must point to the installation. Configure the DNS record with your domain provider, allow it to resolve to the VPS, and then follow the current AzuraCast SSL and Let’s Encrypt guide. Keep administrator credentials private, and avoid sharing control-panel access with people who only need to listen.
Check the listener-facing endpoint
After HTTPS is configured, test the public player or stream endpoint over the network your listeners will use. Check it from outside the server itself, and include a phone or other mobile connection if that is part of your expected audience. The test should establish that the public route works; it cannot establish that the VPS will never go offline.

Set the stream format without guessing
The reviewed AzuraCast requirements and installation references do not establish one universal bitrate, sample rate, codec, resolution, or keyframe interval for every station. This is an audio-radio setup, so video resolution and video keyframes are not relevant to the listener stream. Choose audio encoding settings supported by your station configuration and listener requirements, and consult AzuraCast’s current documentation for the controls and accepted values in your installed version. If you enable transcoding, account for its added server workload; the resource recommendation is not a capacity guarantee.
Clear Indian music rights before broadcasting
Software automation does not clear rights. Treat rights in musical and literary works separately from rights in sound recordings, and confirm the scope for the exact catalogue, internet use, audience territories, and commercial model before putting tracks on air.
Musical and literary works
IPRS identifies “Internet Non Interactive” (INTB) as a licensing category. It says platforms using music from its repertoire, including online streaming services, need an IPRS licence and/or must pay the author royalty share to IPRS for its author members. A radio-style stream may be relevant to the non-interactive category, but the correct route depends on your operation and repertoire. Ask IPRS to confirm in writing how its terms apply. Sound recordings
PPL India says its standard licence strictly covers on-ground music use and does not permit non-physical or digital usage. Its FAQ directs radio-broadcast licence enquiries to its licensing team. Do not assume an on-ground or terrestrial-radio permission covers an internet stream or an online simulcast; ask PPL specifically about internet-only streaming, the planned use, and the recordings concerned. Check repertoire rather than relying on a catalogue headline
PPL’s business licensing page states that its repertoire exceeds 1.04 crore songs and lists multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, Bhojpuri, and Haryanvi. That is PPL’s stated library size, not confirmation that a particular recording is included or cleared for internet streaming. Do not launch on the assumption that one licence, or a combination of IPRS and PPL permissions, automatically covers every song and use. Keep written confirmations and any applicable licence records with the station’s operating documents.

Keep the station maintainable
Back up files and configuration
Plan backups for both station configuration and the media library, and decide where backup copies will live. A VPS snapshot can help with recovery, but confirm what it includes and how restoration works with your provider; do not assume a snapshot replaces a separate media backup.
Schedule updates deliberately
AzuraCast’s update guide recommends backing up before updates and warns that stations will be briefly offline during an update. Choose a low-listener period, notify listeners if appropriate, and follow the current procedure at AzuraCast’s update guide.
Plan for outages and audience growth
A single VPS remains a single point of failure and may require maintenance. Uptime depends on hosting, network, monitoring, backups, and recovery planning. AzuraCast documents AzuraRelay as an option for distributing a stream or handling a large volume of incoming traffic; whether it suits your architecture depends on your audience and design. Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The installer does not complete: check that the host meets the documented requirements, that you used a fresh compatible server, and that the commands match the current Docker guide. Confirm you have the required administrative access.
- The admin interface works but listeners cannot hear audio: test the public player or mount point from outside the VPS. Check the domain’s DNS and the provider’s network or firewall controls against the ports required by the current AzuraCast setup documentation.
- HTTPS setup fails: confirm the domain or subdomain points to the installation before following the Let’s Encrypt guide. Recheck DNS resolution and the current SSL instructions.
- AutoDJ has no music to play: check that audio files were uploaded to the intended station and that the playlists and AutoDJ configuration include them. Also verify that the files are authorized for broadcast.
- Audio interruptions or poor performance: observe server resource use and network behavior during playback, then compare the workload with AzuraCast’s sizing guidance. Media size, listener traffic, and transcoding demands can affect requirements; the published minimum is not a listener-count promise.
- The stream stops during maintenance: AzuraCast updates briefly take stations offline. Back up first and schedule updates when a short interruption will be least disruptive.
